    MAINTENANCE DAY
Xbox Servers are down for maintenance.
Perhaps they are fixing some of the issues?

The issues got worse on PC after last maint. Don't get your hopes up.

For those in this thread having issues - does your experience line up with this gif?

Yep, that's exactly what happens.... or at least a variation of the numerous manifestations of in-game lag.

Sometimes I get the displayed rubberbanding, and other times there's no "bounce back," and the screen goes gray, the cursor turns into the spinning Windows "thinking" icon, and then one of many various error messages are displayed. "An unexpected error occurred, please contact customer service," or "Booted from server," or " "You have been dropped from the server because you hit the message rate limit. Please avoid excessive messaging (ie spamming)!" when I'm not even using any keys besides 1-5, R, and WASD.

This also happens to me as well. I've noticed that when everything stops I have to stop all inputs. Usually if I do this quick enough it will bounce back.

If not, thats when everything locks up like you described.

Anyone know if there is a way to determine, from the user end, whether or not the chat AI monitor is causing lag?

It could be a coincidence of timing that this latest bout of extreme lag and disconnecting began about the same time ZOS began implementing the Chat AI bot, but then again, it might not be a coincidence at all. We have no way of knowing. But we do know, at least the PvP community knows very well, ZOS does have a history of putting the player base through testing new things like this without much regard for the impact on customers.

Another example. Theres only like 15 players in this area by the way. Again, this is in PvP but the exact same issue happens in trials, dungeons, and overland. @ZOS_Kevin (check page 48 as well... lots of people saying they have the exact same).

This is what it's been like for months. It used to happen once an hour but now its down to every 5 minutes. This happens anywhere, PvE, my house, doing writs, trials, PvP... doesnt matter.

How is this acceptable for a company of this size? How has there been nothing official put out about this? The amount of people in zone chat asking if anyone else is lagging is ridiculous. @ZOS_Kevin @ZOS_BrianWheeler working as intended?

For those in this thread having issues - does your experience line up with this gif?

When I'm in PvE it's much harder to tell (I ended up putting my ping dead center so I can see it more). I notice it most in PvE when trying to interact with things. Obviously trials and dungeons are a different story - its much easier to tell when it's happening.

This is generally the experience, often times experienced by many at once, for durations varying from 2-20 seconds. computers well exceeding ESO spec reqs, with all graphics turned down to mud, and it still happens (mind you, I played near flawlessly with max settings prior to about 4 months ago, save for around ball groups/full server fights) yet a partner on an 11 year old laptop doesnt have the issues when i do (sometimes, we are both experiencing problems, as are all my guilds at large). People can pretend its individuals computers all they want, but these issues arent user end.

Ive considered the performance problems before this thread (planemeld 2024 when PTS melded with live, and server rollbacks every 10 minutes for a day on live servers ) to already be considered a 'not-acceptably functioning product' as someone described above, let alone the last 4 months where even flower picking in an unpopulated zone has 10 second delays on picking flowers/talking to NPCs/attacks registering on mobs, let alone the joke that is PVP right now.

dont worry yall, im sure Q4 2026 PTS cycle will have a remedy, just keep paying for this 'quality' until then.

Happens like every other day for me. Experienced it in solo and duo IA. Experienced it in 4 man dungeons, and also seen it happen to other group members. Experienced it in PvP too. Everything has been worse since the maintenance on monday too. What's even worse is that no matter the PvE/PvP location, skills/LAs don't fire or fire after a noticeable delay, and the game has brief hiccups with NPC actions despite my ping being 80-100. It's also tiring to keep losing my ult because the game says I'm too far away to loot a corpse despite standing directly on top of it, so I accidentally cast my ult when I press the loot all key.

This is my experience as well.

Due to the extended time period this issue has been going on, the lack of confirmation/communication from ZoS, and (warranted) frustration I think it's time the ZoS coms department has a come together moment.

There needs to be a full acknowledgment of this issue, put out on socials (not just a post in a 49 page thread), and a full write up on them being aware, what they have done to date regarding the issue, and what the next steps fwd are (even if they aren't sure of a fix).

I think this is a fair expectation from a paying player base (I've been an ESO+ member for years straight up until this month because of these issues).

@ZOS_Kevin can we expect something like this or are we going to get a more "hidden" response for a lack of a better word? Just wanting to set my expectations accordingly here.

I posted something like this a few pages back (or maybe a dif thread, who knows anymore) but their response will read something along the lines of:

"Just wanted to reach out and acknowledge that we are aware of the issues and have passed it along to the team. Please note that while we do not update here daily this is a priority and we are working on it, though we cannot disclose any information on steps taken at this time. Please keep feedback constructive and submit tickets (that we will mostly ignore) with videos documenting the problems (that will also be ignored).

"In the meantime, please list the platform, zone and activity that you were doing when these problems occurred(which has already been done, see pages ~15-30), and refer to our help link (that isnt addressing the problem, but im sure they are mandated to link it) to troubleshoot issues. Thanks for your payment-i mean patience."

wow, either I sound really professional, or I've seen this sort of thing parroted enough to remember it. Either way, y'all hiring? I got this response on lock. Can demonstrate other replies too, such as "no, you are banned, no free crown crates for you." or "please refer to community guidelines and accept this slap on the wrist with grace as I edit your post for conspiracy because you said something that our creative director literally said, live."

Again, don't understand these kind of comments. I'm extremely happy you and your guild mates are able to play this game and not have lag, I truly am.

Unfortunetly, many of us (as indicated by 49 pages now) are not in the same boat as you.

Yeah, that is pretty much spot on for the responses we get. I'll give them the benefit here and say they are coming in good faith trying to give us updates but ZoS tends to have a less is more approach until they are 100000% confident in the reason/solution - which is very difficult for the player base.

I'm glad to see more companies are shifting from this approach and just being honest and transparent with people saying hey man we know its an issue here is what we have done testing wise, here is what we have done solution wise, here is how the priorities stack, etc. (Halo Infinite I'm looking at you GG on how you handled that by the way)...

Just wish ZoS would adapt to this new standard of coms.

People all across the server just got hit with server lag all at the same time. Some of us were in a dungeon and it hit, others were trying to access their bank in town. All of us had low ping in the 80s. Yet the game froze and wouldnt interact. Some people got booted off the server.

This means the servers themselves are having the issue. Which means ZOS knows exactly what the issue is. It just seems to be acceptable to them.

Was just in selenes and every time I took a few steps I lagged, the dps ended up tanking while I was malding in a corner 😂

I can't give them benefit of the doubt here.

Many have given countless examples for better communication, especially in situations like this. I never, ever see them implemented, let alone responded to. We've asked for its priority, its impact, ETA, what's been tested so far. All we've gotten is "no update" and a request to not derail other threads. None of the constructive suggestions are answered though. I'm genuinely curious what @ZOS_Kevin thinks when he sees posts like this. Are comments and suggestions like those not taken seriously? Doesn't seem like it.

And it's not the first issue where this has happened either. So in theory, they have existing feedback to go off and could better style their communications. I just don't see that happening. It really makes me feel like they're unwilling to change their communication styles. For all the disruptions they get on streams and other threads, you'd think they be willing to try new things to make situations like this better.

It's not the first issue where this has happened either. So in theory, they'd have feedback to go off and better style their communications. I just don't see that happening. That makes me feel, and probably others, like it's a matter of "won't" and not "can't" change their communications style.

For two, if they were just testing things, and for whatever reason the literal forum manager can't find time to post that, fine, I'd expect some views on the videos. I don't think that's the case, or wasn't the case for a little while, so I'm not confident they're currently working on it. Again, all of these questions and ambiguities could be cleared up with the format folks like you and I have provided.

I want to follow up on this as while I understand this is frustrating, I want to clear up the notion that we do not care or are ignoring this. If we didn't want to deal with it, we would have closed the thread a long time ago. We know this is important and want to make sure that if there is information to share, that it is accurate.

To answer your question directly, what I think every time is I wish I had more info to share, because I know this has been a frustrating issue for months.

At the end of the day, with this situation in particular, this isn't something that we are trying to brush aside or don't want to talk about. If we could provide you with a detailed solution right here, right now, we would. Since my last few posts, the status of this issue has not changed. We have engineers checking new information as it comes up during the investigation, but nothing successful yet. We have also been passing along your updates and theories in hopes they will aid the investigation as well. This is all information we have provided before. So we literally do not have additional information to give. And we cannot give an update on information that we do not have.

As I noted the last time, we are following up internally to get an overall update to provide, but we are in the process of doing that now. Again, we know this is frustrating and we appreciate everyone bearing through this.

@ZOS_Kevin I'm not saying you're ignoring the problem. I'm saying the suggestions for better communicating its status have not been implemented. And I was curious if those suggestions for better communication were taken seriously. And I even said, before my edit, I was suggesting more targeted responses when asked for status updates. And earlier gave you a format to follow because I felt it helped. A few others have asked for similar replies too.

The ask isn't for a solution plan, not yet. The ask is for line of sight on what the team's working on and what the priority is. Example is, "diagnosing platform XYZ, currently in sprint, etc.".

What does "new information" mean here? Is it just our posts, is there anything from their side that's also fresh information?

I get that you can't provide information on a solution that isn't ready. I think most reasonable people here understand this is in flight. Not happy about it, but I understand. But, saying there's no information really does paint the picture it's not being worked on. I know that's not the case. This is why I'm giving you suggestions for better portraying the efforts underway. If we understand how big of an issue it is for you guys, then it's easier to digest why it's taking so long.

Just speaking from experience, I've been on projects where major integrations failed and took weeks to fix. Those are very abstract technologies and explaining to business people why they're failing is a challenge.

But at the end of the day, if I went and said, "no information, still figuring it out" for months on end, people wouldn't be happy to say the least. I had to report on my theories and findings, regardless if they were the official solution or not.

Point is, keeping us updated on current hypotheses and testing efforts is going to be better for the situation. Better understanding what the team's actually working on or testing is going to be incredibly helpful. There's a lot of technical information provided by a lot of people, and I think it's only reasonable seeing something similarly technical in return. If we know what you're testing, then we can provide better information for you.

Kevin, when you check back in, can you please try this format? I think that would help resolve the sentiments here.
    • What's the scope of the issue, how many people are impacted (roughly)?
    • Which platforms are impacted?
    • What is the priority of the issue for the teams involved?
    • What testing has been done so far?
    • What's currently being tested?
    • When will the team view the videos and information provided?
    • Is there a timeline yet for a fix?

while i appreciate the reply, i and most probably everyone else would wonder how long does it actually take to identify the issue when this isn't a recent thing, this has essentially gone on for months. there is no way at a company the size of zos does it take this long to at least see what this issue is or have a relatively good idea of what it is. i do feel bad you you kevin as i know this must be frustrating but i hope you can understand it from our side, we have and continue to pay for a service we can not use. we have lost trifectas, time and probably our patience to this issue and its becoming to feel like there is no end in sight.

i really hope we get to know whats causing this in the next few days even if you cant tell us the exact issue but tell us you have a fix. personally, im over spending my free time on a service that doesnt work! its rage inducing that its taking months to get this sorted :(

Genuinely curious - does any of the team play this game in their downtime? I mean that as in experiencing it in their own gaming time during peak population times? Having the chance to feel what’s happening and maybe notice things about when it occurs personally in real time possibly providing more clues/ideas/context than watching the YouTube videos of other players playing with unknown system/Internet setups compared to their own.

I do understand if many don’t because I can only imagine the burnout of WORKING on a product all day and not wanting to touch it (or at least play other games/pursue other hobbies) in their downtime. But the question came to mind. Just knowing someone working on the game can also say “Man, I hear you. This is frustrating. It affected my dungeon PUG last night. We’re still trying to figure out why because it stinks for my crew, too.” would at least make the issue feel seen from a user level. I dunno if that makes sense and certainly not pressuring any devs personally to say stuff/dox themselves.

So we literally do not have additional information to give. And we cannot give an update on information that we do not have.

As I noted the last time, we are following up internally to get an overall update to provide, but we are in the process of doing that now. Again, we know this is frustrating and we appreciate everyone bearing through this.

    Appreciate the update.

    - Where does this rank on the back logs priority?
    - What testing or trouble shooting has been done thus far?
    - What analytics are your systems telling you (is everything green or has some alerts gone off)
    - What is the coms plan moving forward aside from... trying to get an update?

I find it near impossible to believe that zos doesn't know what is causing this. Now, if it's a conversation like "we know its akamai but if we take it off we get ddosed to hell and back what do we do".. I get that. Communicate that.

Honestly they should just watch streams and see peoples IRL experience. Any PvP stream will show you the absolute chaos of the server performance.

So you're saying you don't know what's causing the lag? You don't know if the Akamai latency/packet loss is responsible? You don't know if it's the glut of new items, sets, polymorphs, circus flash mounts and the like that's putting strain on the servers? You don't know if it's DDoS attacks, or AI chat censors, or anything else?

    That's concerning.

I can't give them benefit of the doubt here.

For one, a lot of us have given very concrete examples of how to improve the comms, especially during situations like this, and I never, ever see a response to those suggestions. I'm genuinely curious what @ZOS_Kevin thinks when he sees posts like this. Like are comments like this not taken seriously? A lot of us are saying, we need more information, context, framing, etc. and it's just not being given.

Since my last few posts, the status of this issue has not changed. yall also keep posting events left and right which isn't helping at all with the lag. Dedicated servers isn't a bad idea or if you upgrade your servers, the game is getting more players which is good but i dont think your servers can handle it. But it is very very concerning that you dont know what's causing this lag after this long of looking into it. I do hope you find a solution because this will cause a loss in players. Every trial i get into, we get like 3-4+ people disconnecting at the same time. @ZOS_Kevin

I was just about to run some dungeons with friends in a guild but everyone is complaining about 10-15 sec lag spikes.

It feels bad wasting money on this.

I came here to see why this hasn't been being addressed for months now and was pleasantly surprised to see this. Genuinely appreciate the engagement even though I know it's frustrating for you as well. Every time I come back to the game though it's as if nothing has been done to improve performance, even though it was supposedly made a priority a couple years back.

I've spent the last couple days getting my account/storage ready to cancel my ESO+ (first time I'll play without it) because the lag is too bad to play outside of the times I do stuff with friends, and sometimes that is cut short from the lag as well. For a game with a subscription model, paid chapters, an in-game store, and loot boxes, I think it can be (at least for me) quite frustrating to feel like this has just always been an issue (true or not, it's been an issue enough for long enough that it feels that way) and makes it feel like it's not a priority.

I have videos of my issues as of late, and it's only with this game. Stability tests and traces show a stable connection on my side. Oddly (and this may be a coincidence) the issue seems to be lessened with my VPN on.

One of the devs holds the world record in most trials, so yes they do play their game, and at least one of them plays at a very high level.

I've also raided with one of the combat devs before (a different one from the one mentioned above).

This, using a VPN and hopping around does make it slightly better - which it shouldn't considering my speeds go from 850mbs down to 100 mbs on vpn.

Came to the forums to see if this was happening to others en masse. Kind of relieved to see that it is, as awful as that sounds.

I'm in the same boat as the pvp gif. Since the last maintenance patch, I've been intermittently freezing for 5 to 10 seconds. Then the game warps to the present and I hope that I'm still alive. :-D Immediately after said freeze, my latency will show as 999+ for a while before dropping back down to 83 ms.

Has affected my groupmates as well. Seems to occur predominantly in instanced dungeons, at least in my case.

I hope ZOS figures out the root cause. Edit addition: is making the last part of this event quite interesting, at least. Feels like the enemy is casting time stop on me at random intervals. LIke some kind of Psijic challenge mode. At one point, I froze and then warped to the present... only to be lava-blasted by a fire shalk and thrown onto my butt right as a minotaur was going to hack at me with his axe. Time travel is cruel.
