    It is quite funny indeed:
    - That "addons = cheating" thing
    - Content creators for ZOS = Streamers, youtubers, fan artists [oups, no addons authors here]

I came from another game where addons were tolerated at a time the game was in maintenance mode (and at that time the addons were literally keeping the player base from moving to another game) and later became illegal/forbidden so I had to quit modding for that game, but here addons are 100% supported by the game via an API and I there is still a tiny bit of "black market"/"back street seller"" feeling... :D

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make but 'content creators' means streamers, youtubers and artists. It's not something ZOS made up.

It got confusing when it moved into general use, especially among gaming communities because a gaming content creator does sound like it should mean someone who creates things for the game, not for 3rd party sites. But it was originally an internal term only used by social media and video/streaming sites. Those sites depend on traffic from users, but they don't make anything themselves to drive that traffic - they rely on their users for that too. So 'content creators' is what they call the sub-section of users who create the vast majority of their site contents, the ones who give other users a reason to visit and therefore the ones they want to focus on supporting.

Because people who work for those sites kept using it the term slipped into general use, but it still means the same thing.

My point is that the word "addon" or "add-on" is near to nonexistent on the official website, the word "add-on" appears in news article from 2014 and 2019 and the only version of the official website with recent articles (2023) mentioning addons is the French one, which gives me a little feeling of working in an Outlaws refuge... But that is fine, it is just funny... :)

    I did...now I think it's silly and unnecessary.

    you never use TTC?

Nope and I get along just fine most folks I know bypass the guild vendors nonsense and we trade amongst ourselves...we pretty much want for nothing and we don't pay ridiculous prices.

I'm in a trade guild and I don't use the TTC add-on. I do occasionally check the TTC Web site if I'm unsure if how much to list an item for, but mostly I see what others in the guild are listing for.

I do use Arkadius Trade Tools to keep track of my sales, though.

    Your point is moot.

ZOS intentionally created an API (Application Programming Interface) specifically for players to use in order to create add-ons for the game.
Add-ons are absolutely sanctioned/allowed by ZOS.

A funny story about the add-ons I use that just happened to me.

Ten years ago this April I bought a gaming pc that’s served me very well until recently. I only had to change the graphics card one time to keep it relevant. Well, I just finally got a new pc. A bit paranoid about losing files, I copied what I wanted to keep to an external hard drive and then copied the files from there to the new pc today. I know there’s probably better ways to back up and restore things, but like I say, I’m a bit paranoid about that stuff and like to put my eyes on the files and see them move from place to place. This included ESO in its normal place and also my Add On folder where it is supposed to be (why they can’t be in the same directory instead of DOCUMENTS of all places I’ll never understand, but oh well!). I ended up having an issue with some addons. I troubleshooted, searched the Internet, uninstalled, and reinstalled the add-on several times, disabled them one by one in the game and reloaded the UI, and nothing ever changed.

I finally figured out what was happening, the new computer was automatically using OneDrive for the addons instead of their normal location, and LibCustom was way out of date on the OneDrive version (my problems with OneDrive is an entirely different story, and probably hinges on a lot of user error and lack of understanding of its purpose). Anyway, once I figured this out, all it took was editing the registry to get the new PC to look in the right place for the addon folder, and everything fell into place. And now, having an SSD makes the game load so much faster…my only problem now is losing that nap time I used to have during loading screens! 😂

PS. As to the topic of this post, I am in the group that looks at add-ons as basic conveniences that are missing from the base game. And as some have said, add-ons are something common for Elder Scrolls games that fans expected from the very beginning.

It’s quite ingenious really, ZOS can feed two birds with one hand by creating the system that allows addons, thus satisfying that need, while having to do less work than they would have had to do to put those features in the game themselves!

Allowed but absolutely not promoted, that was my point.

Maybe I'm parsing too finely, but I wouldn't go so far as to say "absolutely not promoted."
ZOS may not conduct overt advertising campaigns for them like they do Chapter and DLC content, but they made space available for promotion to occur via the player-base.

The forums may not be an article published by ZOS, but they exist on the official website.
The existence of this thread shows that Add-Ons are a widely-known (albeit, player-created) feature of the game, and the existence of the API is not obscured; the topics are not stricken from view by forum moderation.
Also, Add-Ons and the API are occasionally mentioned in the official patch notes, and there's even a section of the forum dedicated to Add-Ons (all of which to say that the terms *are* visible in ZOS-created documentation).
The subject can be discovered with a search of the forums.

The allowance for discussion of game-related topics in a space created by ZOS can be seen as a type of promotion; it's just driven more by word-of-mouth than out-right official advertisement.
