So what is the difficulty people have with light attack weaving?

I just thought it'd be good to figure out what was going wrong for people struggling with this concept. For me I feel blessed that after utterly failing my first class which was mag sorc, i became better with my 2nd character a khajit stamblade which with that class it was part of activating skills and building ulti etc as an nb. So when i had to use that habit on other classes later down the track it wasnt a big deal, im very far from the na server so skills not going off and swaps not happening that goes on but i just keep on with it what else is there to do really but carry on as usual. With practice and repetition it just gets easier for me for everything, familiarity and deeper experience with understanding. Thats my 2 cents anyway 😁

the difficulty is that it hurts due to chronic pain and not always having full control over my fingers.
it doesn't get easier for me

so if i weave i heavy attack weave which is less fast

Aging reflexes; very high ping due to only having satellite connection (usually upwards of 750 ms) so bar swap and weaving just don't work well.

Oakensoul makes life much better for me.

Lag is also a factor, along with bar swapping.
No idea if it's worse for console users with pads rather than keyboards, but at times, the rate of light attacks just not happening is stupid.
When it works, it works!! when it doesn't (persistently, over months), you give in and give everyone heavy attack builds!

It's not "difficult" for me in any way, but it's uncomfortable during a longer session of difficult content... such as multiple dungeons in a row... or longer DLC dungeons... requiring frequent breaks, which is unfair to other group members.

But, I'm not looking to cause myself a repetitive stress injury over a game, so I have switched to mostly lower APM heavy attack builds and some new arcanist beam builds and am able to play more often and enjoy the game much more. I do also continue to use some of my older weaving builds occasionally and they're fun - it's just not something I can do constantly.

EDIT to add: As another poster mentioned, it's also incredibly frustrating when there's lag.

I have a friend in my solo guild i regularly help with wb dailies and the like, so i am familiar with this issue. I just didn't immediately associate it with light weaving when i started this post. Sorry to those that are suffering in the game, you have my sympathy.

Lacking decent keyboard/mouse skills, forgetting rotation, health issues etc etc

As others have said Oakensoul was a game changer for me, I was already pretty much gimping myself with "one bar" setups, suddenly I could have some yummy buffs too!!

I understand how to do it, and can sometimes manage it, but like other disabled players it greatly increases the chronic pain in my hands, wrists, and forearms. It can also trigger inflammation attacks from one of my autoimmune disorders which can cause my hands to swell so immensely that I am unable to bend my fingers. Finally, there are times when muscle spasms greatly reduce my ability to control the movements of my fingers, and "faster" movements like those needed by LA weaving are more likely to cause muscle spasms in my hands.

I do know players who will not use LA weaving because they consider it exploiting a broken aspect of the game code, no different from another exploit that has never been fixed. It's simply one that's become so inherent to DPS playstyles that it's now accepted by the general playe rbase and the devs alike. I don't hold this view, but I do understand their argument.

Funnily enough people that I have shown how to LA weave they were previously trying to hit the attack and skill too fast. Getting them to slow down really increased their output

I hate it because LA doesn't fire every time. It seems to be worse for certain weapon types, too. DW seems to fire only 50% of the time, while flame staff is much better. Not sure if there's a lag component that's created by certain animations or what.

Due to a type of palsy, I play using my right hand and left thumb (xbox controller on pc.) I was able to do most vDLC trials as a healer and the base game vTrials as a tank or healer, so I feel like I got to see most of what the game has to offer. It is what it is, I'm fine accepting that LA weaving is the way for optimal dps and I've never tried to get into harder content as a dps or been upset about it. Non-vet content I can dps acceptably.

I'm with you, SlyReynard, I don't feel like I'm missing out on too much. I def would not attempt a trifecta trial, mostly because I know my limits lol, but I have been able to do plenty of vets (even some HMs, no deaths, etc.) with friends and have lots of fun regardless!

(Once did March of Sacrifices on HM, dropping every like 5 seconds and reconnecting so quickly my character never died, and I actually did manage to finally get that beast personality! I won't say it wasn't frustrating as heck, but it wasn't ESO's fault ... and it felt super good to get it in the end.)

Veteran players have been alienated and disengaged from Overland since One Tamriel, due to the lack of difficulty, and pushed into dungeons and trials; the minority of content in the Elder Scrolls Online. We can't take the repetition anymore, fix Overland engagement for Vet players. I don't even care if it's not combat related anymore, just make Overland engaging again.
    ---
Overland difficulty scaling is desperately needed. 10 years. 6 paid expansions. 25 DLCs. 41 game changing updates including One Tamriel, an overhaul of the game including a permanent CP160 gear cap and ridiculous power creep thereafter. I'm sick and tired of hearing about Cadwell Silver & Gold as a "you think you do but you don't" - tier deflection to any criticism regarding the lack of overland difficulty in the game. I'm bored of dungeons, I'm bored of trials; make a personal difficulty slider for overland. Make a self debuff mythic. Literally anything at this point.

It’s not difficult. It just sucks and isn’t fun. It causes repetitive motion injury. It wears out your mice and controllers. And again, it’s just not fun.

Are people clicking once per skill? I ask because there was a popular myth that light attack weaving was performed by spamming clicks all the time. 1 Hz click rate is not difficult IMO, but 5-10 Hz does sound painful.

The rhythm game has always been there, for over 9 years. Removing it would be silly… and boring.

With all the lag one click per cast isn't always enough, that's true. That's why some people just use clickers that spam lmb while being pressed - you only need 1 click per skill this way, much less painful. Should be a feature in the game tbh

I can do it, I can even do it well, but like others in this thread I'm plagued by chronic pain. I just had a screening for rheumatoid arthritis done. 💀 I'd like to preserve as much function in my hands as long as I can to pursue my other passion, art. So, I have a "heavy attack build, sort of" on my main. I have it set up so I can still weave with crystal frags if something just like, really needs to die quickly. Used to run vet trials...haven't in a while.

I've been taking a break from ESO lately and playing WoW again, and it feels great not having to use my mouse for anything except character movement, and not having my DPS be reliant on how fast I can click my left mouse button with my right hand while hitting a key with my left hand.

Carpal tunnel in both wrists, cubital tunnel left arm, and Dupuytren's on left hand

I rely on addons and "fast attack" mouse button to help me in ESO, it works well but I top out around 115k because I can't manage to get down to the 0.75-0.8s weaving times needed to get into the 120s-130s. The addon and mouse combo can't beat a human who is really good at LA weaving, but it gets you close enough to do all but the very hardest content.

There are addons that can help you by not allowing you to trigger a skill unless a LA has been performed. You can also get a good gaming mouse to go with that has software that works with a "fast attack" or "trigger" button. I keep mine set to the button just above and to the left of LMB, and set the timer around 100-250 ms. Then you can just hold that button down with one finger and focus on hitting your 1-5 keys or whatever you have set up for your action bars.

With my heavy attack mag sorc I top out around 90k on parse, but it's much easier to play in content than traditional two-bar builds.

After helping some payers I've noticed how quite a few thought that spamming lmb was the best way to do it instead of doing timing right once a second. I remember it was the way presented by gilliamtherogue back then, being awhile since and newer content creators doing a lot better job at proper explaining and execution.

When I was learning to weave I ended up in the habit of just tapping the right trigger (I play controller on PC) before casting any ability, even to a point where I don't need to or shouldn't (like buffing in a town and accidentally light attacking a guard). Even when ping is bad it doesn't require multiple hits, the animation is just cancelled by the ability.

The problem is LA weaving is just as unreliable as bar swapping as you never really know if it fired or not. There was a time when it worked well enough to make it worthwhile but it started going downhill after the Stadia changes moved many of the client functions to the server. This makes the impact from lag, from all of its causes, much more common with the result that HA and one bar builds are more reliable.

i feel the same way, part of the reason why i love playing Nightblade is that it's incredibly satisfying to get a good parse going and seeing the numbers fly up.

but it isn't for everyone, obviously. lag is one thing, but the mechanical involvement in weaving is unlike anything seen before in these games where resource/ability management is more important. going from WoW to ESO must be like moving to a different country. i don't blame anyone for disliking it, especially if you have health complications that are impacting your gameplay.

It varies from medical conditions to hardware limitations, and personal reasons such as being boring or being unrealistic. Sometimes your location to server as well since high ping might be a bit problematic for weaving.

Ping to the server and it’s affect on light attack weaving remains, perhaps ESO’s biggest elephant in the room. This is a big reason they came up with heavy attack builds and Velothi Ur.
