They removed elk, but did they replace them with Guar and Kagouti?

They didn't look like mushrooms they were more like simple poles. They needed a lot of water. And...

the fossils do not display structures usually found in fungi

And they were from a time of no creatures bigger than caterpillas. Wldnt have coped with Elk.

    So not, AkShuly

The only reason I'm posting this is because at some point I was going to reply to something else, changed my mind, and there was no way to zero out the post. Every time I check into this thread that stupid half-formed post keeps showing up at the bottom of the screen and I can't find any button or command to tell the forum to stop saving the stupid post because I don't want to post it any more.

In addition to what Jaraal said, you can replace the draft with a single period and 'save draft' (not 'post reply'!). This is why some of my posts start with a period, and why occasionally there is a post from me that is just a period. Be aware that the latter is "spam", so if you end up with an unintended post, 'flag' it and ask for it to be deleted.

I am sure I have hundreds of these saved drafts as I never go back and delete them.

....I had no idea you could even delete drafts.... :s

    Thanks for this! LOL

@Pelanora sorry for the late reply, I only just caught your response by pure chance. But I can't resist the opportunity to respond.

Firstly, not all structures are "displayed". Its very easy to wonder, given a completely different 500 million year sequence of environmental states, about the sort of adaptations that might be possible. You might even say that's the essence of fantasy, after all, and it would be the better argument. But on the basis of your argument-

Mother nature has come up with the most bewildering array of responses from unlikely starting elements and vast amounts of geological time. No one would have looked at the first Cetaceans foraging the shorelines of proto-India and imagined the Antarctic Blue Whale it would give rise to.

Look at plants. A nerdy Ordovician amoeba might have looked at the soft, mossy green crusts carpeting the rocks- relying on capillary action to transport water over their puny distances, adjusted their spectacles with the palm of their pseudopod and self-indulgently scoffed at the notion that they might one day structure whole biotic communities based entirely on their great size. With its limited capacity to imagine the trajectory of 500 million years of evolution, perhaps this bespectacled entity should be forgiven for not imagining the innovation of Lignin that resulted in a game-theory driven race to one day be defined by their ability to tower over all the other lowly organisms 100m below in the dirt.

Prototaxites is interesting because it demonstrates that given the mind-boggling sum of all evolutionary possibilities over vast amounts of time, "this couldn't happen" feels like it wants for imagination, and it can only really be defended by an increasing list of conditions and exceptions to "this couldn't happen", because, evidently, many more things could be possible than you might immediately think.
