Handwaving it by giving it some contrived "lore" explanation would just cheapen the value of lore.

In the real world, you might have "remnant populations", "invasive species" or "introduced because why not?" but we're working with drastically limited scale, so things like this impact far more drastically on the tone.

Tone is particularly important to places like Morrowind*, which are defined by it.

Ask yourself why the developers put Elk in the Telvanni Peninsula. Is it really because it reflects reality? Because it tells a better story? Or is there something else at play?

Even if you tried saying it's an "invasive species", Morrowind was largely isolationist and protective of its culture in the Second Era. The Library of Andule confirms House Indoril's primary focus is preservation of the Dunmer ways. Letting elk in seems like a rather incompetent move on their part, especially if it interfered with the local flora/fauna.

Judging from how hard they went on making new assets (even making new Telvanni furnishings), couldn't they have reused the Morrowind fauna and maybe create a new one that's actually fitting in Morrowind? Hell, just put in some of the Crown Store reskins or better yet, tease the Vvardvark mounts that are coming up. Vvardvarks are a Telvanni creation, why not see the bigger ones around?

To be fair, ZOS has never tried to explain any of their perceived lore faux pas. The chances of them removing the incongruent elk before Necrom goes live are slim. But the chances of them actually trying to explain why they made this odd choice are zero.

Mostly bumping for attention from devs and other folks but I'd like to mention that not only are animals like elk in mainland Morrowind slightly lore-breaking, but it's thematically incosistent and, from an aesthetic point of view, a mess. Even if you can make up some far-fetched lore explanation as to why these animals are exclusively in the Telvanni Peninsula, there's still no denying that it clashes. A lot.

Bumping as well as it seems ZOS is just ignoring this thread ._.

But i agree, it's not just lore-breaking but thematically bad as well.

Just a suggestion, but opening a /feedback on PTS and writing your opinion about Elk will also draw attention to this.

While ZOS has not responded to this, and may not, I am sure they have seen this thread. It would be hard to miss it. They may or may not do anything about it. If they decide to do something about it, it is easier to "fix it in the lore" than to edit the game. They can just drop a new book somewhere in the game, "Elk, the New Kwama", and claim some eccentric imported them.

considering lore wise horses cant survive the lands of morrowind due to all the ash and toxic plants/mushroom (not to mention all the marsh land diseases) elk would in no way survive since they have an even more delicate diet structure.

stick to lore please, remove the elk, replace them with nyx, alit or kauguti
PLEASE REPLY TO ME WITH @dsalter otherwise i'm likely to miss the reply if its not my own thread

If they decide to take that route, I'm most likely done with ESO. Sorry, if that's sounds like I'm overreacting, but if they can't stick to established lore I see little reason to continue playing.

The only reason I'm posting this is because at some point I was going to reply to something else, changed my mind, and there was no way to zero out the post. Every time I check into this thread that stupid half-formed post keeps showing up at the bottom of the screen and I can't find any button or command to tell the forum to stop saving the stupid post because I don't want to post it any more.

So I'm posting this. In my defense when I turned 50 a few years ago I immediately forgot how technology worked. Lately I've been considering an AOL account.

In addition to what Jaraal said, you can replace the draft with a single period and 'save draft' (not 'post reply'!). This is why some of my posts start with a period, and why occasionally there is a post from me that is just a period. Be aware that the latter is "spam", so if you end up with an unintended post, 'flag' it and ask for it to be deleted.

I am sure I have hundreds of these saved drafts as I never go back and delete them.

There are elk in Wrothgar and Western Skyrim as well.

What do these four zones have in common? Yes.... snow. What does "Telvanni Peninsula" not have? Snow. But the new zone has the same standard wildlife as the ash-filled rest of Morrowind, doesn't it? So, why aren't there elk in Stonefalls, Bal Foyen, Deshaan, and Vvardenfell? Those places are closer to the elk's natural homeland, so there should be even more of them there, right?

      It doesn't make sense.

No, it does not. I hope that ZOS will fix this, but realistically, I don't expect them to.

The most appealing thing about having Morrowind based zone should be it's unique ecosystem - all the strange fauna and flora which made home there, since the usual stuff can't survive the enviromental conditions: Most normal plants won't grow there and those few which do will have thorns, toxins etc. to avoid being eaten. As there isn't enough edible plants usual herbivores can't live there, meaning usual carnivores have nothing to hunt, so they won't live there either. Instead we have lot of fungi and gigantic insects, which likely wouldn't survive in competition with plants, mamals and such, but are able to thrive here.

Elks quite obviously don't belong there. It makes no sense to have them and it will take away from my immersion and enjoyment of the zone. Can't think of any reason for ZOS to put them here except lack of care or laziness. Hope someone on the developement team will step up to fix this.

Hit the nail on the head, it would probably be quite a easier fix then other things i imagine, simply replacing the Elk with some netural Guar.

      I agree with OP
One of the reason I love Morrowind so much is because you rarely ever see anything 'normal' It's all Guar, alit, netch, stilt striders, cliff racers, netch hounds... things that are alien or insect like.

As for that I'd like to see instead: Giant vvardvarks? Maybe an elk that more closely resembles a netch hound with big eyes, pincers, and jerky movements.

But there are already guar roaming around in the new zone. It's hilarious to see guar, wamasu, and elk grazing together near pink and green mushrooms and pine trees. Especially when one of the new purple and pink Cthulhu bosses float nearby. The flora and fauna reminds one of what a young, imaginative child would cobble together in a dream. It looks totally unnatural and jarring. Oddly, the Apocrypha zone, while wild and fantastic, seems more cohesive by comparison.

I'm just as annoyed as everyone else about the elk being in Telvanni district.
But I'm hoping they are just a placeholder for the time being. The zone plays default soundtracks, too, i.e. placeholder music (I'm hoping).
I listen to the Tamriel Rebuilt soundtrack from tes3 while venturing throughout Telvanni. Fits very nicely.

There was another area in Apocrypha, if I remember correctly, that had boars and other non-Morrowind creatures running about. I'm hoping those too are just placeholders.

They usually have everything but the music in PTS. We aren't likely to see a new type of creature in the final product, but we also aren't likely to hear bards singing about Vastyr in Ald Isra. There's still time to replace the elks with existing animals though.

I saw boars in part of Apocrypha, but that was explicitly a menagerie where Hermaeus Mora collects specimens of interest to him.
