Yeah, I'm having this issue with Comcast. Tomorrow I'll try the vpn fix you all mentioned or try an alternate service provider... It's 2 am now after spending hours trying to come up with solutions to fix the problem, logging on to see if it fixed it, researching information, etc. Sigh :(

It's just really confusing because I played nearly ALL DAY yesterday and no issues. But sometime around noon today and nope, every 5-30 minutes I'm offline again with this unknown error.

Hey there, everyone. Thank you for your patience while we've been looking into the issue. We've investigated the "Unknown Error" and it appears to be the result of packet loss between your Internet Service Provider and our game servers. We ask that you please contact your ISP to help resolve this issue. Thank you again for your patience and understanding.

I guess is not Zenimax fault that my ISP sucks, my ISP is not fixing the problem either so I guess I won't be able to play this game, on the bright side I don't have this issue with Wildstar, so I guess I will be playing that, I guess my connection can't keep up with the whole megaserver thing. If I am getting so much lag in the starter zone I can't imagine how is going to be on the PvP zone.

Just for reference, I get 80ms while playing LoL NA server, WoW NA server too and the Wildstar beta server, played them all this weekend, so the problem is not really my ISP, is the connection between my ISP and your servers.

I've had similar problems in SWTOR and GW2 in the past. SWTOR worked with the people whose 'hop' it was wasn't working properly. GW2 tried hard but there were so many hops from me to them that it was just easier to subscribe to a gaming vpn like lowerping with their dedicated short hop tunnels to game servers and have done with it.

I use this service all the time now for MMO's and things are notably more stable.

    Dear Jason

I understand that you guys are doing your best to solve this issue. The flack on forums is a result of the frustration of exasperated gamers being booted from an awesome game every two minutes. But your response is not helpful and only fuels the frustration we, as paying customers are feeling.
It is not just VM, I am personally with EE. This means that it is not an issue for the customer to solve with their ISP.
Please understand that we have paid an great deal of money for the early access Imperial edition. £70 is a vast amount, considering that most MMO's are now in-game purchase based. As a result, it is a fair expectation that Zenimax technical support will do their utmost to fix this, not ask us to go on a wild goose chase. You do not go to a restaurant and pay for a meal, only to be told that you can't have the meal as the food wasn't delivered by the restaurant's supplier, but you can personally call the supplier to try and solve the problem. This is not a good tactic to keep your clients happy.

Please also note that I have pinged this response to as many gaming sites as I can think of. I believe that this is an issue with your server that needs to be acknowledged by Zenimax, not our ISPs.

I am a pragmatist, I understand that any genre redefining game will have teething issues, however, there are many of us left unable to play the game as a result of this 'unknown error'. Please give us an update on the progress of this error, that does not refer to 'the client' contacting an ISP.

Try that WTFast 30 day trial, or maybe port forwarding on your router (see https://help.elderscrollsonline.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1133/kw/ and portforward.com).
For me these help make my game more stable while I'm online, but unfortunately in my case, does not help make my connection stable enough to stay online for long during peak hours (currently 4pm til 10pm BST for me at weekdays, was between 11am and 11pm during the beta weekends).

A lack of even 'ok we'll look into it' from VM recently is worrying for me. Personally hoping that ZOS don't wait too long to move the EU server as that may clear the problem for those of us using it, or have a similar problem to occur when they do move it, which will then have us chasing down ZOS and our ISPs all over again.

Just an update from my side. Since Monday I've been using my wife's ISP provider ( Sky ) and the game runs very smoothly so far even at heavily populated areas ( haven't tried pvp yet) .
The only difference between sky and VM is ,as far as I know, that my wife's connection is classed as ''true unlimited'' which means there is no throttling involved even for peer 2 peer traffic. Which further reinforces the view that for some reason various ISP providers , including VM , treat ESO as p2p

Thanks @Minsc. So I guess if we are having issues it's because of isp's treating ESO as p2p traffic. Is this something that ZOS will be discussing with these isp's in an attempt to resolve for us?

I have been posting on the Virgin forums but there's no response forthcoming from them. Switching to Sky is an option, not as fast download speeds though and I don't want the line rental... I guess I will give Virgin a week.

Just want to chime in here - I'm on VM also with exactly the same problem. I've never had problems with any other online games. Very disappointed. Clearly other ISPs are also having this problem. ZOS need to look into this as they implemented the game this way.

My friend in Belgium is now experiencing this issue. He is unable to ping the mentioned IPs now and can't login.

Same here. It was perfectly find in the Cold Harbor intro area, and for a bit on Bleakrock, but once I hit the next areas the game was unplayable. It wasn't an issue of FPS, as my FPS was a constant 60-80 range.

I could run around the world all I wanted, however, I could not interact with anything. If I pushed ability buttons, after a solid minute, one might activate, characters would rubber band around the screen, then it would all stop again. The entire world in stasis but me.

I want to love this game. I'll admit I am an Elder Scrolls fanboy. But what am I supposed to do here?

It depends a lot on at what time you are playing.

Ah for f... sake, maybe it's time to sort this problem out soon? Every day around 1600 british time everything becomes super laggy, and I'm not able to interact or anything. This *** has spoiled my whole headstart. Can some moderator at least let us know that they are aware of this ***? And don't come and tell me to talk to my isp provider, cause that's not the problem. Every other game works perfectly.

VM have finally replied and are looking into it, and it sounds like they suspect @Minsc theory on the P2P issue.

@Zen peoples ISP will do nothing so help here, the solution is going to be in your client/server connection code. You are too tightly monitoring packet loss and dropping the connection. You need to write a fix that increases the amount of time the client can become unresponsive before the game drops for an "Unknown Error" and then also add an actual error code for when the client looses connection to the server that provides you information about how long these packet loss issues occur before the drop happens. Is it milliseconds or 3 seconds or 10 seconds??? If it's milliseconds then your code is to tight if it's 10 seconds then you need to pop a message to the end user that they were unable to communicate with he server for X seconds so their connection was dropped. Anyway you look at this you can code the client around the issue to make things work better! Telling somebody to call their ISP is an absolute joke and TERRIBLE customer service. I hope your offering refunds to people (a LOT of them) if this persists.

Yes... this problem has not been fixed and it probably will never be. People have stopped complaining because we are tired of being ignored by customer support.

And because people don't complain ZOS won't do ***.

I have this same issue, though i usually don't get a disconnect, just seems like extreme packet loss, first issue being the lack of sound then everything else starts to go, sometimes it comes back, and sometimes i just Alt+F4 the game and go downstairs. I'm in US and my fiance and i sit beside each other sharing the same modem/isp. I have the problem and she does not. Been dealing with support since early access to no avail.
  • MydLyfeCrysis
Still happening, off and on. Connect for 10-20 minutes, huge lag spike, DC'd with "An Unknown Error Has Occurred".
