I was excited about them until I started using them and saw how much of a grindfest they were going to be, and how quickly they die..., decided they weren't worth the hassle and haven't called them out again.

    ^USER ERROR!

The only people having them 'die quickly' are the people who don't know how to properly set the up or, spend the time to level them up. Don't expect a low-level Companion in white gear equipped with mostly melee damage abilities to survive very long even in lower level content. That is the entire point of the "grind", to make them more efficient, more competent, and more able to survive more difficult content. You get out of them what you put into them, period! I'm so tired of people making statements about Companions 'dying quickly' especially from people that haven't even used them.

So, I was tinkering around with this since launch trying to warm up to the idea, but I've decided that until they consider making animal companions this isn't for me. I just don't like having a chatty NPC following me around.

I like them, but the whole idea of romancing Bas gives me gross teacher-student vibes because he's obviously not an equal partner. There are other NPCs in the game that are weak, but seem like adults. He's written as baby adventurer. Maybe Mirii is better.

Bastian was already a solo adventurer and trying to save his brother when you found him, he's literally his brother's personal bodyguard and has been for his entire life lol. Before that he was well trained in both magical aspects, and physical aspects, having known akaviri martial arts. Don't see how he's more a baby than Mirri when Bastian is like HELL YEAH LETS GO everytime you engage in a fight with someone or stumble upon some mysterious cave, while Mirri is like "ugh I guess we're fighting". For an adventurer, Mirri really hates actually doing it more than he does. While he seems to understand and accept everything that comes with the dangers of adventuring. Mirri will even state "I swear I never got into this many fights before I met you", while Bastian's dialogue suggest that's he's always been a fighter, and quite loves it, and he never shows any restraint in getting physical, even knocking out his own foster bro and threatening to bloody his nose.

I think the more appropriate word to call him is a little "blissfully naive", but I don't think that comes from inexperience, just who he is. He even states "I always try to see the best in people, and set a good example for others to follow". Although you could argue that it's wisdom and philosophy more than just being naive. I remember forgetting to dismiss him and accidently killing someone and he mostly just dropped some bhudda-like wisdom on me. He seems more like the teacher in the relationship than vice versa tbh.
