So this game is getting remastered for PS5 right? Otherwise it will die

Please add cross-play between console and PC while you're at it.

I expect the game to look like the Demon's Souls or Horizon Forbidden West trailers that were revealed. PS5 is fully capable of photorealism. The gameplay of the remastered ESO should look like the cinematic trailers it currently has.

The existing graphics of this 7(!) year old game (released 2014) are heavily showing their age - very washed out, low poly, and zones like Auridon are very low detail and bland. The graphics in the latest WoW expacs already beat ESO by miles (look at how dense the Kul Tiras capital is). Without a graphics remaster, new players won't be attracted to this game and it will die in a few months.

Yeah, any successful game MUST have next-gen graphics. That explains the failure of MineCraft, which never achieved any recognition nor high player numbers... oh wait...

And yeah, 2020-2014=7 (SEVEN !!! emphasized with an exclamation mark) years. Sure.

And yes, ESO will die. For a gazillion reasons that have ALL been mentioned over and over and over by gazillions of forumers for.. well, SIX, not seven years.

Care to explain what's so different between your first and your second screenshot ? Genuinely interested.

Minecraft already got a remaster in 2019 to add ray tracing and HD textures, giving it superior graphics to ESO...
Look at those water effects ... they blow ESO's effects out of the water.
You need more hardware to play Minecraft (a RTX 2080 TI) than ESO at this point, which just needs a potato machine to run its potato graphics.

I am curious about this as well.

From my own point of view the bottom picture is taken first person of the real gameplay.

The top photo looks to be grabbed from a trailer for the game. At least thats whats the angle says to me.

The kind of remaster you're envisioning would be INCREDIBLE, but it would require essentially building a new game. I don't think you're going to see fundamental engine or asset changes. They would need to ensure compatibility with existing data baked into the game. If we see this (and I expect we will) it'll probably be a little more like the Dark Souls II port to PS4--a little crisping up, improved textures and models, and a few QOL features in a package that includes all existing chapters. Unlike that port, I expect character data to be retrievable from the PS5, because it's stored server side, as opposed to locally on the machine, and that's actually exactly why I don't see a remake happening. On the other hand, I could see expansions going forward becoming more graphically dense for the PS5, but probably nothing shockingly dramatic.

Are you hype for Demon's Souls? I am! :o

This post reflects the opinions of exactly one person and nobody else.

I love graphics just as much as the next guy..but get real.

People have been saying this game is dying since the day it was released. But every single year, the population goes up.

WoW is a Riches to Rags story. ESO is a Rags to Riches story.

The Demon's Souls screenshot is from a gameplay demo. There's actually a lot of similar areas in Dark Souls 3 where you can take similar screenshots. FromSoftware (and we have to give Bluepoint credit here too) excel at creating compositionally pleasing gameplay.

The game could use an update BUT right now there is no way for a massive multiplayer online game to look like that screenshot you posted while still allowing for large amount of accessibility

Single player games? or games with 6 people in an instance? Sure - but ESO population numbers? No

Look at WoW - they chose those graphics to work with lower end tech to make the game more accessible

Star Citizen on the other hand is for high end PCs

Also, i'm looking at the footage of Kul Tiras and the graphics look pretty much the same as every other expansion.

Hot garbage. Stylized, sure..but still ugly. Way uglier than ESO.

As this photo demonstrates..ESO is not ugly.

the average player numbers on steam increased from 20k to 38k during corona, currently at 30k.

Players still are fascinated by the lore and variety the gameplay offers.

I have watched many PS5 gameplay trailers today.
A comment mentioned, that these blockbusters have a common problem: 25 hours of gameplay (current PS4-versions), artificially extended by some repeated quests. I have played horizon zero dawn, and after 4 weeks it was over, I had explored literally every stone.
In comparison: I play ESO almost 2 years meanwhile.

Games will have an even higher challenge now, as the enhanced grafics make it even more difficult to add variety. A region that could be designed in 3 months before, now might take 6-9 months, as the detail level requires far more designer work.

So no, I don't think that there will be a big loss in players without a grafics update.
The only potential loss I see is another issue, when PVP players explore a new world because they are frustrated with the often unplayable performance.

Minecraft already got a remaster in 2019 to add ray tracing

    Which was a gimmick...
giving it superior graphics to ESO...

    ...

I take it your definition of "superior graphics" is "uses latest GPU techniques", not "has better aesthetics & style"?
You need more hardware to play Minecraft (a RTX 2080 TI)

Which further emphasizes the "it's a gimmick".
than ESO at this point, which just needs a potato machine to run its potato graphics.

    Two points:
    1) "needs stronger GPU" - again, this doesn't mean that a game is "better graphically". Just that it either uses Latest Graphics Techniques (which are only on latest GPUs) or "has terribly optimized graphics techniques" (which needs a beast GPU to run)

    2) Mass-market MMOs want to reach the most players possible. Which means that, yes - it wants to be able to run on "a potato machine"
"Cater to graphics nerds who want to show off their SLI 2080 Ti's (in a desperate attempt to justify that their rig cost waaaaaay too much)" is a niche field.

...also, "cross-play between PC and console" is never going to happen. They're different servers, and that's that.

(as for a PS5 "remaster"... PS4 games are supposed to be quite easy to make run on PS5. So there's no need for a remaster, just a few engine tweaks, up the view & grass distance, and download some bigger textures. It's still the same basic game, it doesn't/wouldn't need a "remaster".)

I would like to add! I'm absolutely in love with dense, realistic graphics too, but graphic fidelity isn't the measuring stick we should be using when we determine whether a game is beautiful.

    Okami-HD-feature.jpg

So, don't worry about the graphics. :) Encourage ZOS to keep making better design decisions!

The game isn't going to die unless people stop buying it which may or may not happen. It won't make it to the PS5 in the condition that it is in. Better keep that PS4.

ESO have nice graphics style. Yeah, older zones are bit outdated (some textures are really bad) but new zones looks really good. I like Greymoors design very much - really nice terrain, architecture, outfits. It's good looking even without new AAA graphics effects.

New generation of consoles is good moment for "remaster" of old zones - just main textures - terrain, rocks, architecture, etc. Eh it may look so much better with so minimum effort. it's really so much work to pick ugliest, blurriest textures and make version with better resolution?

Iirc correctly consoles were almost an afterthought for ZoS

However if the next gen's promised increased performance means we can have nicer stuff on PC because the consoles are more able to handle it...….. then I personally hope they do make the game available on them!!

MORE housing space please!! Something that in the past has been said to be not possible because of..... you guessed it..... consoles!! >:)

ESO died back in 2014, twice, first was shortly after launch, due to a lack of end game content, and later in the year due to no console launch. After that, it died in 2015 because ZOS focused on console launch instead of PC.. Oh, yeah, also in 2016. Possibly also in 2017, 2018, and 2019. It is hard to keep up, but I know it will die this year due to Harrowstorm and Greymoor, with the ever popular skill desync, and probably again later this year because of something Lambert or Wheeler will say. Rest in Peace, dear ESO. :disappointed:
