Another Game Performance Thread

Just came accross this video on reddit, and it just reminded me of the gold old days of 300 person battles with virtually no latency. Just hoping that someday we can have the same performance that was available over 5 years ago. And have possible the absolute unacceptable performance that is ESO right now actually acknowledged by the developers.

The last thing they had to say was "There’s been strain on the servers, but they are holding up well – a testament to the team and the hard work they’ve done over the past year on performance and stability. " https://www.elderscrollsonline.com/en-us/news/post/56681

This is absolutely infuriating from the standpoint of someone who actually cares about the state of the game. It's been 5 years we have had to deal with these issues and the game is becoming borderline unplayable if you're doing anything other than picking flowers.

What concerns me even further is they have said that the performance has already been addressed on the PTS with update 26, however playing in trials on the PTS it runs just the same and even worse than live right now, and there are barely even any players on it.

Please stop treating us like we are idiots, because it really feels like you just dont care about your veteran playerbase or even playerbase at all and that you actually just want them to up and quit the game. From ignoring and screening actual serious questions on livestreams, to the statements on the servers where you say they are "holding up well" is just absolutely rediculous.

Agreed. Furthermore, there are some terrible game-breaking bugs that have been going on for 5 years that devs simply ignore.

Now I know it may not sound like much but did you report the performance on the PTS using /bug? It's like a forum post x10.

Yeah I have made multiple reports in game and direct. I will show you the response they gave me for my resport on the PTS its absolutely hilarious.

    Greetings,
Thank you for contacting the Elder Scrolls Online Team.
We would like to work with you to resolve your technical support issues. If your PC meets minimum specs, we should be able to get the game performance up to normal levels.
The Elder Scrolls Online launcher includes a utility that provides us with the system specs of the PC and other relevant information to assist us in correcting common performance issues.

If you send us your file, we can work with you to address your performance concerns.
    Thank you for your patience.
    Warm Regards,
    The Elder Scrolls Online Team

This kind of response is absolutely ridiculous. Its like they have no idea how their own game is performing I just dont understand how they can return an automated response to someone that is trying to test their own game.

They released this performance improvement plan and two thirds of it, update 24 being Dragonhold and 25 being Harrowstorm, are or at least should be already in the game.

However so far if update 24 improved anything is debatable and it was for sure no silver bullet for anything. The dungeon finder has still a lot of the same issues. Even further update 25 had us reinstall the entire game, to then worsen the performance in almost every aspect, leading to many activities being almost unplayable. In conclusion two thirds of the performance improvement was a complete disaster and so I have absolutely zero confidence that update 26 will turn it around.

2/3 of that picture above are completed. Sadly those changes actually made the game worse, performance wise.

That's phase one of the process, you know the 'is it plugged in?' phase. After that is the 'oh well guess I have to fix something' phase. When the game first dropped they hit me with a ticket that was a wait 150 days type deal while they sort out the problem. It never got fixed and I just waited for console launch. To this day they probably haven't figured out what went wrong, and I've seen a thread were some1 had a similar problem.
But the important thing is you send them back to the drawing board, knowing they can't be complacent.
Some people hype up the patch & update 26. This contradicts that hype/hope. Showing not even the PTS is immune.

At this point they are going to work with you specifically to everyone's benefit. Maybe ask you for a recording. Because there's different types of lag. And different areas were the game can break.

As ridiculous as it may sound I'm surprised you encountered lag on the PTS. (Though I myself encountered an infinite load screen.)

Every single person that I have played on the PTS with has experienced the same kind of server lag on the PTS that is prevalent on live right now. We are trying to run vss godslayer on there to test the combat changes, and the instances are just as bad or even worse than what is on live right now.

Q4 2019 update 24: "Complete rework of the LFG system". I don't believe that to be true at all.
Currently, there is a bug in the LFG system where your character might get stuck in an invisible, corrupted group, making group play impossible (either joining/creating a group or using the LFG).

Yes it's rather horrific, and anyone who plays the game for more than a few minutes is likely acutely aware of how bad it is.

That the developers think the servers are "holding up well" implies that either:

    A. "Holding up well" simply means "working" without any relation to how well they may be working, in which case they are technically correct, or,
    B. No one on the development team with any decision making power actually plays ESO, or,
    C. They do play ESO, but they don't possess the technical skill or ability to fix anything, or,
    D. They do play ESO, but they simply don't care enough about the embarrassing performance enough to fix it, or,
    E. Their bosses only care about $$$, and will not provide them with the resources or time to do anything about it.

As someone who's had to work in places with short-sighted corporate management, I personally believe it's a mix of C and E (mostly E).

I refuse to believe that anyone who does coding/game design/etc for a living wouldn't be anything less than ashamed of the performance of the product their name is attached to.

However, from my own experience it's very easy to imagine some clipboard wielding petty-Napoleon telling the ESO team that they refuse to allocate them more resources to truly fix game performance and/or onboard more staff to help deal with it. It's also quite easy to imagine them telling employees to keep their mouths shut when they speak to the media, less they want to find new employment. Anyone who's ever had to work in a soul-crushing corporate torture chamber should understand this line of managerial thought all too well.
