The hamster wheel that is grinding gear is a staple of any MMO, is it not?
You propose to break the wheel. We saw what happened with that in GoT.

I think that depends on the content you do. All of the dungeon/trial sets are bound and they're what most want, aren't they? There's always utility (crit) and crafted sets, but I generally find those as secondary sets to go with the main you grind. In my experience anyway.

Oh, it's entirely possible that my point of view is just severely limited. I tend to run stuff like Hunding's Rage (crafted), vMA weapons and the like, so I never felt like acquiring any of the things I wanted was overly difficult or time-consuming. I'll agree that dungeon sets are really more annoying than challenging to obtain. I don't really know how painful it might be to try and obtain trial sets multiple times across several characters.

That said, I'm not sure I'd be happy if vMA or trial gear was no longer bound and just ended up on every guild vendor. I know that's selfish and making this stuff freely available for everyone doesn't take anything away from me, so I wouldn't ragequit over it or anything drastic like that. It would kill my motivation to play more challenging content, though. It felt nice to clear vMA for the first time, because hey, here's some difficult stuff not every player manages to complete and I get some fun, exclusive gear to show for it. Sure, it doesn't feel quite as rewarding when you run through it for the 100th time, but I enjoy having at least a few things here and there, which maybe not everyone can obtain.

Again, completely aware that I enjoy these things for selfish reasons. ♥

Removing binds on gear is a bad idea.
This game has little to no farming required compared to other mmos. Spend a day to farm all your gear and you are set, hell even if it takes a week.
How can you even consider this hard. I actually find the drop rates and everything way too high. it doesn't feel satisfying to complete your set of gear because it is so easy to get.
In WoW I spent months on getting my item level up, other MMOs have cash greedy upgrade systems that break your stuff if you are unlucky and that combined with really low droprates.

ESO makes it very easy to get your gear, even for casual players, there is no need to make it even easier.

Having stuff like vMA weapons is a nice little thing that sets you apart from less skilled players and gives you an advantage cuz you earned it. And it should stay that way

Bind on Equip should still be a thing, but I wouldnt mind making at least non-perfected trial gear and weapons marketable, excluding vma and vdsa weapons as there are no perfected versions of it (yet).

Bound items should stay, you use something its yours you can't sell it.

Bind of Pickup however should be scrapped from the game and all those people that then say "well no one will run the content if they can just buy the items in guild store" How do you think those items are going to get on the stores?

It will be no different to farming overland sets players will be able to sell the pieces they don't need instead of just vendoring/deconstructing items people desperately want or need.

I have had plenty of times when I have run a dungeon, got some really rare weapon drop, which my character does not need and only those in my group to give the item to.

I have given away plenty of weapons that I knew were rare at the end of dungeons even if no one in the group said they were farming set pieces at the start because I know how much of a pain it is to farm them.

Have given away at least 6 Burning spell weave inferno staffs since I started tanking dungeons on my main earlier this year god knows how many I deconned or vendored simply because none of my characters needed them, if I could have sold them or at least mailed them to guild-mates I know are trying to get them, it would have saved them so much time.

I know plenty of players that put farming trial gear in the two hard basket, I would rather them have the option to buy the excess gear, that players get from trials instead of it going to waste.

I know plenty of people running trials waste small fortunes on potions and other stuff, to run their regular trials, if they could offset some of that cost by selling trial gear, that no one in their group needs, what is the harm with that?

that's my 2 cents tired now so cutting my ramblings short.

Bind on Pickup for dungeon gear is a result of player demand.

    Yes, you read that correctly.

Prior to One Tamriel, it was very difficult to find players to run dungeons and trials. All but a few preferred to camp out at guild traders waiting for someone else this fetch the gear they wanted. End-game PvErs lobbied ZoS to add incentives to get more players to try the group PvE content.

ZoS responded with Monster Sets, but that alone wasn't enough. With One Tamriel, more than thirty new sets were introduced. Every overland zone, dungeon, and trial had at least one light, medium, and heavy set. All group content sets were reserved as rewards for players who played that content.

And guess what? Hordes of players filled group finder, grouped through guilds, and group through zone chat to give dungeons and trials a try. The result is that nearly every player eventually tries them, and most players learned to master the content at some point.

And many of those players shared their experience with others. Many produced guides and advice. Most players now confidently run that group content which once were ghost towns. We're all better players because of that change from BoE to BoP.

The days of 500k Lich Staves are gone and thankfully so. There is no need to return to the dark days prior to One Tamriel when only a few dared to run a dungeon or trial. Is some gear hard to get? Sure. But ZoS made that easier by revamping the Golden's inventory, adding Transmutation, and now revamping Undaunted chests.

Getting the BoP gear you want is easy-peasy lemon-squeezy, with a handful of exceptions out of the thousands of items now available, and the very last thing ZoS should do is revert backwards to cater to the lazy and the greedy.

    just no

go play the game a little

not just flip stuff on market

I know reading can be hard and not everyone has English as their first language, but really? OP's whole point was that people should play the parts of the game that they enjoy, rather than endlessly grind for equipment by doing content they dislike. Did you miss that part, or do you simply belong to the part of the population that thinks a game - ie something played for fun - should be turned into another mindless job and that that is a good thing?

OP you have my support with the caveat that once an item is equipped it is bound, but things should not generally be bound on drop.

Would removing item binding really be good for the game, for the gameplay experience of the community and of an individual? I think we need reasoning for and against such a change. And at the moment we have only your reasoning for the change, so could we get the reasons for keeping the binding as is?

We do not have access to the Game Design Document of ESO, so we do not have definite reasonings why we have item binding in game, so the first question is: can we get a reason/reasons for such a mechanic? I think we can, via some deductions and thinking.

Now, we should start asking some why questions: Why do we have item binding? This might be hard to answer, so let's follow it up with a "what does it do?".

What does item binding do? It binds an item to the player, and bound item cannot be traded. Why is bound items good for a game? I think for this sub-question we need some perspective, let's try an economical perspective: getting an item costs resources; be it time spent or gold. Binding the said item means the resources are bound as well, so they are 'wasted', you cannot get the spent resources back from the said item -> binding is a resource sink. (and in the case of Bind on Equip gear, a gold sink) So, it might be that the reasoning for binding items is resource sink. (to keep this wallpost shorter, I won't go into the question "why is a resource sink good for the game", if you want an explanation, you could try to think it trough)

Of course, binding items comes in different forms, we have bind on equip and bind on pickup. If I understood your original post correctly, we are talking about BoP as a mechanic. Let's continue the question train: why there is BoP as a mechanic? What does it accomplish?

Well, because we have BoP, we cannot get the item via trading, which means we need to do the content to get the said item. Is it a good thing? Why? You could argue it is a bad thing for the gameplay experience of an individual, because it forces the player to do content they don't want to, but this answer doesn't cover the whole playerbase and thus it doesn't cover the gameplay experience in general. So, why is BoP a good thing? BoP means you cannot get the gear without doing the content. Everyone who wants the gear, needs to do the content, which means you cannot do the grind anywhere else to get the said gear. This means the BoP incentivise the content, which translates to more players playing the content, and because there are more players grinding the content it is easier to find other players for a group for the content. This means it is easier for the individual to get a group for a group content and thus I think it is good for the individual to have BoP.

To keep this wallpost short, I won't go further than having a reason for item binding (it serves as a resource sink) and a reason to have BoP (more players playing content + easier for individual to get a group for the content). For me, these sounds like good reasons to keep the item binding and to keep BoP also. There could also be something to think about why more difficult way is better than an easy way, but for it, look up Mihály Csíkszentmihályi and his writing about Flow.

No binding is the holy grail of the Market Lords - it both gives them more stuff to buy low/sell high, and lets them just buy the best gear using their giant bank accounts.

I've seen games where you can just buy everything up to BiS gear, they're a dystopian hellscape.
(don't know if it ever changed, but Neverwinter's economy was a travesty for the first year+. There were other contributing factors, of course.)

Just a way for people to buy and sit on items.

I think maybe allowing us the option to unbind items with high gold or crown option would be cool so I could do the said above.

I would run dungeons a LOT more if gear was bind-on-equip instead of bind-on-pickup with a 2-hour trade window with members of your team only. It would also give me a LOT more freedom in designing my characters. I basically ignore any set that isn't bind-on-equip when designing my characters. Not because I want to, but because I have to. My time is limited, and I'm not spending it "grinding" for "maybe."

The two-hour trade window was added as a concession to players who may have limited time to play group content. When Update 12 launched, no Bind-on-Pickup sets could be traded. Further, Monster Helms werenot guaranteed drops.

ZoS has implemented the following list of concessions to minimize gear grind:

    * The same gear drops in normal as in vet, with the exception of the new Perfected Gear and vMA final reward.
    * Monster Helms are now a guaranteed drop on Vet
    * For two hours after completion of group content, you may freely swap items with other members of your party who ran the content with you.
    * ZoS introduced the Transmutation system. Rather than grinding for an item with the exact desired trait, it is possible to alter the trait on an item.
    * The inventory of the Golden was adjusted to a loot table including Monster Helms, Monster Shoulders, Necklaces, and Rings. As a bonus, the jewelry is always Legendary quality. As an added bonus, items may be purchased with Alliance Points for the benefit of PvP players
    * The reward mechanism for Monster Shoulders has been completely revamp. You may try your luck the old way, or for 5 Keys you may reduce your RNG to 1 in 6.

Those are a generous array of concessions specifically aimed at players like you with limited time. They are generous because of the number of options to shortcut the grind prevalent in other games, and they are fair because they preserve the incentives for players to play group content in what is, after all, a game meant to be played together.

Allow us to trade sets to remove the repetitive grind from the game and allow players to concentrate on what they want to do, for example PVP players could buy the items they need and continue to play PVP without having to gear up specifically for Trials etc. PVE players likewise for PVP-zone items.

End-game content players would get some rewards for being uber as the drops would still be scarce enough to keep the prices high.

We'd also be less likely to hoard bound items that could be replaced much more easily, freeing up some storage space.

From personal experience, I'd have happily paid 1m gold back in the day for a BSW flame staff that just wouldn't drop from CoA and save my 100th run...

The game back in 2014 had no BOP items in dungeons & trials, and still today selling things for money all those years later.
Is just an cash injection when need to buy things :)

But indeed never understood why ZOS made BOP the items from trials & dungeons.

Game would get very boring if you could just buy everything and not have to do the content. Maybe they should tie bound items to the transmute crystal system so let’s say like paying 100 crystals to unbind items or something.

For me is exactly the opposite. There are so many fun builds out there i want to try out, but i simply won't go trough 10-50hrs grinding same dungeon over and over to get the gear. It would be much more fun to just buy the gear and enjoy playing what you actually want, instead lobotomizing yourself for hours grinding gear.

Very. It would mean pointless hurdles and obstacles that stand in the way of me realizing the creative vision I have for my characters would be gone. I could actually consider bind-on-pickup sets when designing my characters in the first place, which would open up a fantastic array of creative possibilities. Bind-on-equip can stay even though I see no logic in it, but removal of bind-on-pickup would be a serious gamechanger for character-driven players like me.
