Help: Magplar PvP build

I’ve always sucked at PvP. I’d go in, get one shotted and I’d go on a rant about how trash PvP is in this game. However I’ve recently dedicated to the idea of making a build so I can finally enjoy the PvP in this game. It always seemed like I hit like a noodle and was made of plush. I’m 430 cp and was aiming for a balance of survivability, DPS, and res. management. You all are way more qualified than I, so any build suggestions would be appreciated. I’m also casual so I don’t have nice trial stuff or Zaan etc. I’m rich though so expense isn’t an issue. Any help and I’d be thankful

    Do you plan to:
    zerg (grouped or otherwise)
    group
    small group
    solo

and do you want to focus on:
    healing
    doing damage
    protecting teammates

There's no one-size fits all magplar build.

I agree with the above post. I also want to add, good for you for trying to get past the angry nerf post. I will also add that no build will let you win, practice does that, the builds just enhance your abilities. So keep at it, it’s very rewarding to get better at PvP and it’s just as important to understand your own class and build as it is to understand others. You need to know how to react to different play styles. And keep this in mind also, magplar is not an inherently bursty class. Your strength will be absorbing damage and applying pressure over a period of time. Know your terrain and know how to force people into places where you can stand in your rune and ritual.

Shameless plug for my own MagPlar build. This is a tanky DD build, so you won't be healing zergs with this, but good for small man or self survivability.

    Why this build?
    • 100% ranged tool kit, so as a newer PvP'er you don't need to go zerg diving to score kills.
    • Stupid good defense.
    • All easily obtainable sets (apart from Master's Inferno, but that can be swapped with 2x Willpower).

Edit: Might also be best looking in the PvP section of the forums, you'll find plenty of guides already there + more PvP'ers to respond.

I was aiming for small group/ solo and doing decent enough damage where I don’t sacrifice too much survivability. I’ve spent most of the time in campaigns dead so XD

I'd suggest running amber plasm if you want to farm it. Shacklebreaker if you don't. All slots should be impenetrable. I find shield back bar to be better than restoration most of the time. Can make due with inferno or lightning up front, but I generally prefer inferno for pvp.

There's several solid magplar builds floating around. I suggest firing up YouTube and watching others build/game play videos. They can help soften the learning curve and give you an idea of why and how each build functions

No matter what build you make, unless you are the type to pop immovability speed potions and nonstop run around trees, rocks and towers, there will always be a counter build that will destroy you. Solo you have to pick your fights. Ball group just depends how well you stay on leader and how many heals purges and executes are being spammed. In a ball group you can take larger numbers on up to a point, and then you just get overwhelmed.

I wouldn't even bother trying to solo. Most people run in groups, and unless you're especially talented, even a group of 4-5 is going to ruin your day real quick.

Having said that though, I often play Sotha, where you end up with Sm Grp V Sm Grp, and that can be a LOT of fun, if the group composition is right. I've been in small groups that have chased other small groups across the map, and I can't vouch for the other guys, but even though we didn't end up nabbing the scroll they were carrying, we all had fun.

Tanky magplar. 5 heavy 2 light. Rattlecage and fortified brass. Sword and shield and a nirnhoned restoration staff. Bloodspawn or valkyn skoria monster set. All impenetrable, you need around 3000 crit resist. This build can take a stupid amount of damage while killing them in the process. I have mine around 4000 spell damage and 37000 resistance in spell and physical. When your resources are low one heavy hit with the restoration staff will fill around 3/4 of your magicka. Side note Argonian passive for potions is needed here I've never tried it on another race. Next quarter though they're reworking racial passives so... May or may not work after that, time will tell.

Then you want a balanced build. Pick 1 defensive and 2 damage sets, or vice versa.

Defensive examples: Transmutation, Pariah, Fortified Brass, Reactive, Bloodspawn, Pirate Skeleton, Wizard's Riposte, Impregnable, Robes of the Hist
Damage set examples: Skoria, Julianos, Bloodthorn, Spinners, Kagneracs, Innate Axiom, War Maiden, Rattlecage, Mother's Sorrow
Raw stats: Shacklebreaker, Bright Throat, Amberplasm

Decide if you want to be ranged or melee and be sure the gear works for that playstyle. Innate Axiom would work for a jabs plar, but a destro plar would lose a lot of the benefit of the set.

Be sure you have enough stamina (~15k) and enough magicka regen (1500+ not counting rune). As a novice, managing magicka sustain and your stamina pool will likely be your first challenge. A magplar out of resources is a dead magplar so err on the side of too much regen at first. You also need impen; I wouldn't go into CP PVP without 3k crit resist.

Fortunately there is an online build editor you can use to play around:
    https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Special:EsoBuildEditor

And definately check out the You Tube builds where you can see their build in action and see if it matches your playstyle. Of course, you don't know what your playstyle is yet, so be open to trying new things... and purple gear is totally fine.
