most likely yes but it does happen in games. Erik the Slayer from Skyrim was created in memory of a forum member who died of cancer.
What I always wondered is how do the devs even find out about player deaths? Nobody in eso knows my real name and I know if I died my family wouldn't say anything about this game that I play nearly every day.

    @Vigarr

I have been playing with my group of friends for nearly six years. We know numbers, addresses, places of work of everyone in our group. We have each other on Facebook. I suppose if you are close enough to someone that you’d notice if they weren’t around.

These memorial posts come from people that cared about the deceased person. I’ve never met anyone from my online gaming in real life, but some of them are my chosen family. I would 1000% notice if something was wrong and they were gone. I don’t know if this is answering your question so I’m just gonna cut it off here.

that's cool. I'm friendly with guildies but I've never met anyone in game that I formed a real friendship or bond with

that tugged at my feels the first time I saw it and it reminded me of that scene from Futurama where the dog waits for him every day til he grows old and dies

The scene on Futurama is a homage to Hachikō:
"Hachikō, a white Akita, was born on November 10, 1923 at a farm located in Ōdate, Akita Prefecture, Japan. In 1924, Hidesaburō Ueno, a professor in the agriculture department at the Tokyo Imperial University, took Hachikō as a pet and brought him to live in Shibuya, Tokyo. Ueno would commute daily to work, and Hachikō would leave the house to greet him at the end of each day at the nearby Shibuya Station. The pair continued the daily routine until May 21, 1925, when Ueno did not return. The professor had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage while he was giving a lecture to his class, and died without ever returning to the train station in which Hachikō waited.

Each day, for the next nine years, nine months and fifteen days, Hachikō awaited Ueno's return, appearing precisely when the train was due at the station.

The resting Bear is a tribute to a Player.

this tribute on youtube was incredible and highlights just how many people came together. Its no wonder they made a memorial.

Yes! The topic has been, with the excuse of the expression, necro-rezzed, but for a good reason. I hope Moderation has the decency of not locking it.

I'm quite good at genetics (as a subset of biology) because I am an expert (which I know is a tautology).

This video is very touching. So many players gathered peacefully, enemies and allies. But the person whom they wanted to honor like this, was not there to enjoy those moments of union. No matter how beautiful and large the event is, it's still a funeral... There is no happieness in it. And the fact that it took death of the player in real life to make such gathering possible, is also sad :'(

I think it would be much better if such large meetings and unions would be done not when somebody dies - they need to be done without any reasons, when everyone is alive and well. To make every player appreciate happy moments of life, and enjoy the meeting without any sad feelings.
Celebrate the life, not the death :/

When I see memorial of fallen player in the game, I only feel sadness and gloom. There needs to be more memorials of happy events, and simply more player gatherings (which don't involve any sad IRL event) - to make participants feel positivity and inspiration.

For example, in other game, there is memorial to event when guild of players defeated difficult world boss for the very first time. It gives pleasant feeling. And it's located at the start of event for this world boss. Every next group of players who arrives there, can read this memorial and be inspired by it - before they go and try to defeat the boss <3

In ESO, I know about three positive memorials. One is book about certain battle in Cyrodiil, others are note about housing guild (located near Luxury vendor in Hollow City) and book about PvP guild :) Hopefully there is (or will be) more of such positive items in the game.

I guess that mine will be next. Had my gallbladder out on 5-26. Pathology report came back as cancerous. It is a very rare, aggressive, and deadly cancer. It has already spread everywhere. I will be starting chemo within the next 2 weeks to try to add some extra weeks and months to my life. I intend to keep playing ESO until the bitter end

Lin the bear. Unsubstantiated rumor. But now I can rest.

Would love to know their backstory. Any dev or others in the know be so kind as to enlighten us?
