you shouldnt be allowed to Report people and force a name change on others simply because u dont like thier name ...

Given some of the names I've seen? Yeah, poking support and saying, "are you sure you want an Argonian named ****s-in-Your-Mouth in your game?" is entirely appropriate.

To say nothing of characters with blatantly racist names. That's a thing as well.

I got told no a few months ago for trying to name my character "Mannimacaroni". Didn't matter that I was changing the name to add the word macaroni, it was still a no-go. I was proud of that one, too.

This is honestly the dumbest thing I've ever heard of Zenimax doing. Obviously no one thinks you are impersonating an NPC or dev. I'm worried they might get mad about some of my names, even though they're completely PG and I wouldn't dream of pretending I was a dev.

Quick question- there’s nobody named Reistr in TES lore right? I know there’s a person in Skyrim who had the last name the Unbroken, but that was a female NPC.

there is a Reistr th Rotted. oblivion. but that shouldn't matter unless you used the exact full name. mostly because Reistr is a real life name( like a lot of the nord names) and not one made up by any es employee. if that were the case, should my cousin Jorun(female) not be allowed to have a character with her name? or would the make me change my characters name Björn(my first name)? that would be ***.

Not really. Naming ones character after a major character in game probably takes the cake.

It has always be something Zos would force a name change after it was reported to them. Nothing new here.

I wonder what will happen when they add more npcs in future content and some of them might share the same name as one of our characters. Will we be forced to name change because Zenimax "owns" that character name now?
Pugging. Pugging all the way to victory.

Seems highly unlikely, though, yeah, you might be forced to change your character name.

There was someone back at launch who named their character, "Dark Brotherhood Assassin." Unsurprisingly, they were forced to change that at some point.

This was indeed always the case. About a couple of years ago I had a guild mate named after the Khajiit version of Sheogorath and he had his name changed forcibly. Not long after he left the game

Ah well, good try anyway, more than can be said for most. Trying to look like the prince was what probably got you reported. I am sure the intention was just to be different and stand out, but thems the rules, and I would have guessed what was going to happen without looking at the TOS. I suppose people who know the TOS, the um TOSers reported you. Avoid Uncle Sheo, he uses that in game and you'll be told to change it again, just something involving cheese. Can't go wrong wth cheese. As my uncle always says.

Kinda sad, can't show your love for the lore....

Except, of course, you're not really.

Instead of showing actual love for the lore, you're pulling down a lore breaking name you shouldn't be using, and scampering off with it.

Every. Single. One. Of my characters has a name based, somewhere, in the lore. I haven't had a single forced name change, because I didn't look for major beings in the setting and then made off with their names in lore unfriendly ways.

You're not seeing NPCs named after Sheogorath because, holy snot, this guy is ****ing dangerous. You do not want to draw his attention by naming your kid after him. Same thing with the other princes.

The closest I've gotten to mythological figures is a Nord named Froa, with a clan name appended, because the Nords do name their daughters after Froa (rarely). So, that's a thing. It's even a clan name that's appeared in the games, so again, that's lore friendly.

Naming your character Sheogorath isn't, because no sane person in-setting wants to invoke the old cheesemonger of doom on their kids... and anyone that loopy would have been dumped somewhere in Mania awhile ago.

The rules have always been the same but enforcement is reactive, not proactive. All it takes is for someone to report your name and you'll need to change it. If no one does you can use pretty well any name you want... at a risk of course.

Maybe I suck at reading the CoC, but I don't find the para where lore names for toons are forbidden.

It reads something about the pejorative misuse of lore names or any Zeni property, but there is not a single line about abuse by use.

Neither do I understand, why *King Casamir* is forbidden, even if *King Casimir* were so.

And its not like they created the name or anything.. King Casimir was the king of Poland in something like 1330-1370

I rng'd an elf name years ago, then randomly came across his own locked front door flap in Greenshade, who would dare lock him out of his own tree?

I suspect it was foreclosed since he wasn't rich and famous like other NPCs.

I think this would only be true for naming a toon after a person of the modern history or a criminal.

Well, tastes differ how a criminal, lets say against humanity, is to be defined. I think Zeni would be fine with Alexander the Great or Julius Caesar.

All my 14 toons have lore or lore friendly names, atm I see one at risk of a forced name change.

Everyone has. That's only because they're new and haven't yet figured out how to tell the players from the NPCs by looking at the account name under the character name. Still don't see how this affects the game in any way whatsoever.

I saw an Argonian NPC in the game once who had a name I really liked. She was in a public dungeon, and had no lines, and no quest associated with her. At one time I thought I might make a character version of her and give her that name, just because I thought she was interesting. It makes me wonder if their rule would apply to NPCs who don't even speak and who aren't involved in quests. If so, that's insanity.

I never made that character, and I guess now I never will.

There's someone who made a character with the exact name, outfit, physical appearance, and personality of one of the bankers in Vivec City. He likes to stand directly next to the NPC he's imitating and mildly confuse people coming up to try and do some banking. Godspeed to that magnificent Dunmer - may he stay three steps ahead of this purge.

I dont believe you ever actually meet Oreyn Bearclaw in any of the TES games. You definitely find his helm a few times, and you meet one of his descendants, Modryn Oreyn in Oblivion, but they are not even the same race (bearclaw was a Bosmer, Modryn was a dunmer). The lore is def a little fuzzy. We also meet Orryn the Black in ESO, but its a different spelling, he is a nord, and I dont see that there is any indication they are related. It's a pretty obscure reference, would be a shame to have to change after 4 F'ing years.

If Bearclaw procreated with a dunmer female, then his children would all be dunmer. Whatever the mother's race is, is what the child's will be.

Hopefully in fine because it’s a different last name- then again I used a generator so I had no idea there was a person named that XD I just liked the name for a Skyrim vampire.

*** now I really gotta pick up Oblivion and play it-

honestly I don't think generic/unimportant characters' names matters anywhere near as much as names of KEY figures like Sheogorath, Uriel Septim, etc

I agree. Fortunately you're not allowed to. Being able to report a name and forcing a name change on others are two very separate things. Reporting a name because you don't like it isn't sufficient to force a name change, the name has to be against the naming rules for the company, not the reporting player, to force a change.
