If you're unhappy with the current option because of the number of crates required to get enough gems and therefore the cost I think it's highly unlikely ZOS selling gems directly would be a good solution for you because it won't be any cheaper. If anything they're likely to make it more expensive because it removes the gambling element.

It would be a good option for people who are opposed to gambling and want a way to purchase items directly, although again the cost is going to be extremely high. It's been a long time since I did the calculation myself but recent estimates put the cost of getting 400 gems for an apex mount at somewhere between $90 and $150 US. It's impossible to say exactly because it depends on how many duplicate items you get from the crates (and how you buy crowns, some methods are cheaper than others). But if apex mounts were sold directly, or it was possible to buy crown gems to get them I think we can assume it would be somewhere in that range.

(For comparison it costs 20,000 crowns - or about $145 - to buy enough event tickets to get an evolved indrik and ZOS have said they made it expensive deliberately because they want people to prioritise earning tickets in game over buying them.)

I just want to play the game. Not interested of gambling or p2qol / p2w and rarely do cosmetics and collectibles so I do not need crown gems. I'd sub if sub gave access to whole game and game performance were up to a sub game standards but it does not so no ESO+ for me.

I'm all for this but it would require game performance actually getting fixed.

They need to fix the twitch steam crate rewards. Watch the last two beginning to end go zero crates. And yes i made sure the account was linked. How about fixing day 1 bugs like the guild banking system

I actually like how it is. It gives me something to work up to. Getting the Queen’s Eye Spymaster felt so rewarding with the crown gems I saved up.

In a buy2play game with optional subs and an overpriced cash shop, I don't see how these annoying crates have any right to exist in the first place, but heyho.

the result would be that the amount of new cosmetic releases drops by about 95%

Both on streams and monthly rewards they throw in a crate once in a while.

    Well liking that, is the first step to being hooked to the micro transactions. But thats probably the whole point of the gem system;
    to get people addicted.

Personally I don't buy the other poll option here, that "Gems are needed for Zeni to support the game"
    The gems are a real cancer to be honest;
As much needed improvement to the game, fixes and features that could be giving more depth to the game
are cast aside in order to keep the crownstore running and up to date.
Overall the quality of the game really suffers for it,if you purely look at it from an objective standpoint.
It would actually be better for the game to reintroduce mandatory subs without such micro transactions.
While fleshing out the emotes, furniture, all the store has to offer & reintegrate them in the base game
available to anyone who pays the sub.
Moving on from there ,actually focus on improving the game and its features.Returning to their former ,well respected ways

Good. The remaining 5% can be earned in-game, and the remaining development resources can be turned to making a game people want to subscribe to.

They have all kinds of rewards in the daily log on rewards. Why not toss some occasional crown gems in there too?

No, they're already quite generous with the monthly rewards. We get useful in game items like XP scrolls, mount upgrades and gold for free, let them have cosmetics that are hard to get as part of the Crown Store. It's fair for us and for them.

Not voting cause if they do this, console players need to be included.

Also no to the idea of getting them through twitch drops because again: console apparently can’t be involved despite the fact my friend found twitch on my Xbox

Drop the feckin' crown gems and event tickets. Stick with crowns and gold. Zenimax has already monetized the game to within an inch of its life.

"Bring back mandatory sub, and get rid of the crown store!"

You guys do remember that WoW and FF14 (the two main "sub required" MMOs these days) both have cash shops, right?

ESO suddenly going back to disappearing requiring a sub, wouldn't get rid of it. (Oh, and given that many people have crown balances, getting rid of the crown shop would screw them over and/or likely be some sort of fraud.)

I think the idea of the Crown Gems is a sort of second-tier of EXCLUSIVITY, beyond the type of exclusivity sold by Crowns.

Crown unlockables are really selling a certain level of exclusivity -- you get something not everyone else gets/has.
    • So, if you get an unlock that everyone can easily get -- like a pet from just entering Hew's Bane -- that's like a cheap $10 watch.
    • If you get something everyone can get, but involves some RNG and/or work -- like a pet from grinding the components in a public dungeon -- that's like a $100 watch.
    • If you buy something from the Crown Store, that's more exclusive because it's gated with real money. So that's like a $10,000 watch.
    • If you got something from a crate, maybe you got very lucky or maybe you basically burned through a lot of crowns for it. So that's like $1000-$10,000.
    • Then there's Crown Gems, which are gated by basically a lot of crowns. That's like a $100,000 watch. Theoretically, very few people should have them. And for the people who basically paid a lot to have it, ZOS needs to protect the exclusivity for which they paid.

Luckily we're not using the luxury watch model where every year, following Rolex's example, all the major companies inch up their prices by about 5% or so, increasing exclusivity and protecting the investment of people who bought older models.

Id rather they just offer everything in the crown store directly for crowns and do away with the RNG boxes from hell.

So much work? During one event all you had to do is to eat cake once a day. Come on. And doing two easy dailies for two weeks is hardly a work either. It's far easier than pledges or really any other daily content in the game, except for writs.

I think it's fine that the currency used for buying specific items from the crown crates can only be obtained from the crates.

    But

To make things more fair you should be able to choose whether you want to add an item to you collection or convert it into gems. I hate auto-collecting all these pets and whatnot that I know I will never use.
Yes, it forces people to buy more crates to get the one thing they want. It also gives me yet another reason not to buy crown crates in the first place.
