Did I misunderstand this or have other people?

"should you make any ESO purchase via the Games on Twitch store and have a linked ESO account, you'll receive a free Twitch Crate."

My understanding is, you only get rewards if you purchase ESO stuff through Twitch, not just for logging onto Twitch and viewing ESO content.

Seems like some people have interpreted this as, "watch ESO stuff on Twitch and get free crown crates."

    EDIT:

Never mind, kept reading... "Even better, you'll have a chance to receive a Welkynd Ouroboros Crown Crate as a random Drop, simply by watching your favorite ESO streamers."

This is smart of them to try and boost twitch viewership as well as people who regularly stream the game. We're in a gaming environment now where higher twitch numbers = more exposure / more popular game.

You are wrong. You get free crates from watching. You ALSO get crates for buying stuff through Twitch.

It is entertaining to see how people overreact to this. This is a promotional that takes negligible resources to set up, will have zero impact on people who just go about their business as usually, and will attract more players and keep them involved. It is something Bethesda is move towards for ALL their games. This is not some desperate move by ZOS. It is a larger plan across Bethesda.

    Yea I kept reading...

I agree with you though, not sure why anyone is upset by this. This just seem like good business.

Don't want to watch ESO stuff on Twitch? Continue life as usual.

The best way to build a community is to grow viewership long term and establish a stronger base to illicit more purchases from a greater number of people. If people are given a carrot that encourages longer term commitment to a game its a better chance to have a long term player instead of a casual passerby that stays for a month then moves on.

Just disappointing. Loot crates are terrible, and ZOS just keeps pushing them more and more... This is really turning me off of ESO, despite all the other good stuff about the game. Like, when will they realize, the answer to people getting frustrated with crates and giving up on ESO, is not to push crates harder? You're just digging yourself into a deeper hole, ZOS. If you want to make more money, your best bet is to stop doing the monetization that people are rebelling against, and get a new system, not push that monetization harder. That just burns your whales out.

What? I'm all for railing against the gambling machine, but this? I'm sorry, but nothing about this presents as "wrong" to me, and I have relatively high standards. I hate the pricing of the crates and the lack of cosmetic additions to the game in lieu of ones to the shop. I really do, and I hate the "apex mount" concept even more.

This though? Definitely not some crazy "korean MMO move."

All it is is an enticement to get people who play ESO to then watch ESO. If ESO streamers get more views, it may attract additional players that way. I fail to see the great harm you seem to be announcing here. Other than that, it is at worst a free addition to things that people likely would have purchased either way. Even if they buy for the crates, at least they're actually buying something.

No, but they definitely have, for the most part, net access at work at no cost. At least in the U.S., you can easily stream videos at work for nothing via wifi and get the rewards with no downside. Or you can go to a coffee shop, get a drink, chat with a friend, read a book, do homework, work on a project, or play the game with a stream in the background...

And why does them not doing exactly what Blizzard does make them guilty of a "Korean MMO move"? I can agree that daily "click to obtain" rewards would be nice, but they don't exactly incentivize people to actually watch the streamers. Given that this is clearly a decent, unobtrusive way to advertise the game, not incentivizing people to watch defeats the purpose.

It's nice that ESO streamers are getting more viewers, but keep in mind that a lot of these will be people loading up the stream and not engaging, not watching, not subscribing - it's like having a guild with 500 listed members but only 3 active members. It's a plastic trophy to put on your shelf. This can give ESO a bad name and end up hurting them in the long run, not only giving a bad impression to twitch viewers who first check out ESO, but also then provoking ESO players who dislike the trend of showing favor to others over them, despite them being the loyal ones to ESO. It might be easier if it were a small incentive, like a one off reward similar to the crown and pet for Tera, but this is something where ZOS wants us to grind even outside the game - like we don't grind enough in-game already.

Youre talking about a company that already has an astronomically large viewer base for their game versus ONE game thats presence on Twitch has only been goin down since the games release. Build a bigger base then they can add in one click rewards. Its how you properly market.

Well I might have pushed it to far by saying that but it just seems like the same basic concept on how Korean MMO's operate where you have to be logged in 24/7 to be able to accomplish anything.

I get what you're trying to say, but I still don't agree that it is the same concept. Having twitch run in the background to gain optional cosmetic rewards isn't exactly "required to accomplish anything." It really just generates an incentive to add viewers to twitch streams. There is literally no need to be logged on 24/7, either to twitch or to ESO. This doesn't change that.

True, but still sucks if you wanted some extra freebies which you know you'll end up having to spend your bandwith or phone service for

That's a fair complaint. If I had limited bandwidth even at work/home, I might feel the same way. Where are you that this is the case? I know I have wifi access almost everywhere, and even at home I can access a "free" hotspot provided by my ISP using other people's routers without hitting any kind of data cap.

Yeah, I dont see this changing my policy on steamers, which is, I dont watch them. I played this game for three years before I even knew what twitch was. First thing I ever watched on twitch was the Morrowind Chapter announcement. I felt like an old man trying to figure out how it worked. People have asked me more than once if I stream, and I am like, who the F would want to watch me play a video game? I play this game too much as it is, no way I am going to start watching others play in my spare time. If I am going to watch eso content, it better be a very informative and polished video.
