This happens in almost every mmo.

And for good reason. You can't expect people to continue playing a game for years on end with no changes or challenges in terms of advancement of both character and gear. Some players - some new to MMOs, others convinced that the only valid part of a MMO is "endgame" - fail to appreciate that these games are not intended to be "finished" in weeks or even months.

They soon complain if there is nothing more to do once they hit "endgame". Yet as soon as a developer gives them more things to do, such as improving their existing gear, they complain about that too  !

Yeah, seriously.... ESO's really really light in that regard, compared to nearly every other MMO. It's not like the level cap increases and you literally have to replace everything.

Or the five raids you progress though in WoW. It is guaranteed as the story progresses, your gear will need to be replaced/upgraded. I like the gear hunt for the most part. I always feel a sense of progression when obtaining new gear, ever since playing FF2 back when I was a kid.

Look at all these non-meta hipsters.... Good for you.

Stam classes have nothing to worry about. Most should have a full damage set up anyway, now that's all they need to run and switch to Lover.

Healers have barely changed in years, though Jorvulds is slowly growing in popularity.

I don’t really. Most my equip might go from being optimal to being a step down, but I’ve never had gear get so broken in a patch I stopped using it right away.

But really in this game if I wasn’t farming gear long term I’m not sure what I would be doing. Motifs are ok I guess. I do housing a little. But most the stuff I would normally farm long term in an mmo, mounts/pets are in the crown store. So there is no farming for them. So without the desire to change gear from time to time, I’m not sure what I would do.

What else do you expect, I hate to break it to you but the actual gameplay of PvE in MMORPGs is simply not very good, I mean it is fine if you are casual, a roleplayer, etc, but if you play a reasonable amount then the gameplay simply does not stand up (doing a dungeon for the umpteenth time is not quality gameplay for most people), in the way people can play say Starcraft 2 for years on pretty much the gameplay alone, because it has a depth and skill cap that makes PvE gameplay in MMORPGs look laughable, which is why most MMORPGs have some sort of grind, it is a substitute for gameplay in a genre where the gameplay is lacking.

I've used those sets a lot, and I'm not that upset they'll become useful for the current characters. I will simply move them to characters that can make good use of them in the future.

#1 Sunderflame weapons & jewelry will stay on my Stamina DK, since you don't always have a stamina Templar in trial group
#2 Sunderflame weapons & jewelry will stay on the Stamina Sorcerer, although that character hasn't become active
#1 Night Mother's Gaze armor will be transferred from my Stamina DK to my stamina sorcerer, quite good for solo
#2 Night Mother daggers & armor pieces will be transferred from Stamina NB to my stamina Templar, though that character hasn't become active at this point

There are plenty of sets that have become redundant over the years and have been moved to 2nd line characters, or 1st line characters that fulfill non-trial roles. For example my Sorcerer has received the old Willow's Path tanking set I was using on my DK, the NB got Tava's after better things came along, and as of CWC patch he's the only one who can use it. Rarely have I deconstructed a gear set. One of the few pieces that will be recycled are a pair of Julianos epaulets since Magicka can now go with 2 x 5 piece sets and 2 piece monster sets.

As for more general setups, which are not optimal in every situation, but are quite close to being optimal for most applications, I simply chose to use
    - on stamina 5 Hunding's Rage or Briarheart or Automaton or Mechanical Acuity (will replace NMG on NB) with 5 Vicious Ophidian or 5 Two-Fanged Serpent and a monster set.
    - on magicka 5 Julianos or 5 BSW (only on DK currently) + 4 Infallible Mage or 4 Moondancer (same results) with a monster set; and those setups will become even stronger since the staff will count as 2 pieces, so I will be able to use the 5th piece as well without changing anything.
So besides the change to stamina support sets that made them "obsolete" nothing really changes for me. CP will change, maybe I will change mundus from Warrior to Lover on stamina if not wearing a TFS, I will probably change the rotation a bit, but those are changes that you can do in a fortnight if you know how the game works, and you already have a large selection of dropped gear, and you can craft all sets.

I don't get "tunnel vision" while running content, so I keep a lot of sets that look interesting, but are not quite "meta". I've had quite a few pleasant surprises over the years, when the majority came to be incorporated in some builds.

I’m glad that my go-to sets haven’t really been tampered with.

I have been using Julianos-Willpower-Monster Set and Hundings-Agility-Monster Set on every toon since I started playing 3 years ago. Those combos have never let me down and they can tackle pretty much any content I care to do.

They aren’t the most optimal, but I’ve landed on vMA leaderboards and comlpleted vet trials just fine with them.

Meta chasing is just too much of a gold sink for me now that I have kids and a full time job lol.

it's like a merry go round of farming, grinding over and over.

I feel sorry for all the stam DDs farming sunder, or spending mats creating NMG for it to be trash next patch (nerf), pretty much the same for SPC from what I have been told (new trial gear outperforms it)

Bro I literally have every meta set for both stam/magicka in full gold I legit don't want to hear this is new.

It's been a problem since before people were pulling trials gear.

Its only a problem because people chase the meta...everyone plays the same builds so much that certain flavor of the month builds start to show as being OP compared to others...so they nerf them. If people would actually play their own builds this really wouldnt be an issue at all...but when everyone plays the same thing the nerfs will continue...playing the meta is a SURE WAY to get your sets nerfed.

Whats more annoying to me is when the meta catches up with a build I am playing...like the shield spamming tank build...the meta caught up to me...and then nerfed a build I was happily playing a year before it went mainstream into the ground...then the meta moved on and left my build so much weaker. I still play it because it is my build and has been for years, but the difference is noticeable

This is another reason to not chase the meta as hard, but to make your own, or at least make sure you're having fun doing it.

Also, I wouldn't call NMG hard-earned, and while 16 temps is a lot for a starting player, for someone who's in a position to chase the meta again post patch, it's a doable expenditure.

Another way to look at these changes is that they will fee up set spots for other sets that are now viable.

No, because in almost every case, the gear I'm wearing is not obsolete. It may no longer be BIS, but it's still serviceable. Most of the time, it seems like the only people with this concern are the ones that jump on to the flavor of the month build (typically dependent on some proc'd set), and now find that their cookie cutter killing machine is no longer so easy to play.

    P.S I played the PTS.

Well it happens all the time, maybe you just dont understand, but as the OP suggests, look at sunder and NMG changes.
nerfed into debuffs that any stamplar will have already as well as poisons and a few morphs have. Or SPC having a "better version" coming, giving the same buff that SPC gives, but better...

So those sets just became viable this update?? Pretty sure SPC has been the meta since it came out. How long ago was that again? Sunder and NMG have both been part of the meta for a long time. I've had my NMG for nearly two years.

The gear grind doesn't bother me because like a lot of people I don't chase meta. I do a lot of unusual builds and I'm picked last for trials and such but I have a ton of fun and can hold my own. A gear level increase would actually make me get off my butt and get to work and that would be welcome at this point.
