The difference is that Gina probably isn't around to update us. Pretty sure when she has further info, if any, she'll let us know given then length of the downtime.

Whether Gina is there or not, I'm sure there is someone in the building capable of taking the responsibility to get an estimate and typing:

Here's the thing. Those servers? They're not in the same building as Gina and the folks who code, support, etc. Right about now the non-tech (the people NOT doing the server work) are likely showing up for the day so hopefully we'll see some info soon.

Even *I* have a telephone that can communicate across multiple time zones and reach me with info even if I'm at home, a passenger in an automobile, or having a cup of coffee (somewhere away from the desk that I'm hardly ever at because I do all kindsa stuff in all kindsa places depending on what wastepaperbasket fire I'm putting out at the time) ....

When you're asleep? Nice talent that. In any case, do see below errr above. :)

I'm in the same time zone as their Maryland offices.
It's 09:27 AM here, so it's not time for the mid morning-pre-brunch nap yet.

    ;)

Things may have changed since I was in the industry but 0900 was middle of the night. We tended to start trickling in around 1000 and work 'til all hours. Only staff that held to "regular business hours" weren't involved in coding, support, etc., they were usually the beancounters and office staff.

Perhaps that has changed in the last decade.

OTOH, when stuff like 'special projects' or 'occasional tasks' that occurred regularly but not daily were scheduled - the normal schedule and crew was altered to take into account the fact that the normal order of business wasn't going to be 'normal' for the duration of that event.
For example: If the server went down during maintenance and that down time was still extant at 5 minutes before 'quitting time', people weren't expected to be putting on their coats and heading for the exits until the relief crew showed up and was brought up to speed regarding extended refit/repair.

I know you know business works like that, I'm sure ZOS works like that, too, but I'm just pointing out that server maintenance at a multi-million gold company supplying a subscription service to millions of people around the world on a daily basis -> scheduled semi-regularly isn't always considered to be 'just another event like all the other ones', no matter how much one would like it to be completely without issue or surprise.

    :)

ETA: 09:00 around here is morning, as the Sun came up at approx 06:46 AM today.

True to a point but I'm not sure what arrangement they have with the tech folk over here in the EU.There may be contractual issues involved. No clue, plus, this week has been wicked with respect to extra work on the servers no matter the geo. location.

My point was ONLY to address the NON-tech staff. The others, well, I don't think folk like Gina need to stay up all night to essentially say the same thing over and over again. Sure, it'd be comforting to those who are staring at the clock but anyone who's played MMOs knows that if it can go wrong or take longer, it will. We're all frustrated by the events of this week, those of us here in Germany (well, some of us) are also dealing with a real mess due to a hub problem. Not been a great week. I'd rather Gina (et alia, again, non-techs/coders) had their rest so they can deal with grouchy people.

What concerns me being on an NA server is for a simple database maintenance, this is the longest time the game has been down since I started playing about 16 months ago.

Well you should be able to understand them, they pay for a service they aren't getting , and what is their compensation, a silly extended day of event , their paying REAL money to get something that doesn't matter *** all , now however if everyone afflicted who is a paying customer gets like 500/1000/1500 crowns credited into their account, we can talk about how the company respects the people paying the bills for them, if you wanna talk about the freeloaders playing a free game , *** em, they haven't done anything for the company , their making millions ingame while doing absolutely nothing except take up resources for others :)

    I remember a time...

Back when I played Guild Wars (1) there was a maintenance that followed with a game issue where runes were either 1 gold or bottom price, when there were a few that sold for far far higher. Players caught on to this immediately and began buying huge amounts of the normally high priced runes. Arenanet caught on and took the servers offline. At the time they didn't have a process in place to deal with this, they would have to do a major rollback and the database wasn't up to what they needed. The game was offline for 24 hrs give or take and when it came back up there was the big rollback and some bannings of a few.

Some times things have to get done, no matter how painful it is. The issues with the servers have to be resolved, short cuts will only prolong the matter.

Awww thanks but it's okay. Ups and downs of life, y'know? Although I really would like to ask the techs at that hub what is taking so long, more out of curiosity than ire.

Gina has a tough job being the person that represents the company. They always take a lot of flak. I was that person for 20 years and you have to really love what you're doing to carry on in spite of some of the venom and rage. She does it so well.

Also, how do you double "a few"?

These are formal project/product management terms, speaking from experience. When stating how long something will take:

    2x "a few" = "some time". 2x "Some time" = "A while" . 2x "A while" = "I was not provided that information"

You should also be aware that most tasks less than half a business day should be considered taking a half business day.

Think about how loudly people would complain.... >:)

<edited to add:> Oh, don't forget the formal game launch term: "When it's ready".

Hi all! Just posted an update in the main thread, but we just entered the final phase with QA to test both megaservers and plan to open with the next hour or so.

Also, how do you double "a few"?

More importantly... how do you define 'so'??? >:):)

It means, they think it might be an hour, but they are unsure if what they have done will work. THey have no idea.

What concerns me being on an NA server is for a simple database maintenance, this is the longest time the game has been down since I started playing about 16 months ago.

Strange, I play it since Nov 2016 (almost 17 months) and I have witnessed longer downtime.

When? Sure there have been some that have gone past 10:30 AM EDT - because they started at 6 AM.

This started at 3 AM and we are now 7 1/2 hours into it - for database maintenance. It was clear it said there was no patch.
