This is a database maintenance, I expected it to take a very looong time even if it went smoothly, and doubling the estimate of 'a few hours' where 'a few' equals 'four', maybe this will take eight hours? I'll go read some tea-leaves and check

They started it at the time they decided to start it.
That means they knew what time it was going to be when they set the time to start it.

Here's the thing. Those servers? They're not in the same building as Gina and the folks who code, support, etc. Right about now the non-tech (the people NOT doing the server work) are likely showing up for the day so hopefully we'll see some info soon.
Even *I* have a telephone that can communicate across multiple time zones and reach me with info even if I'm at home, a passenger in an automobile, or having a cup of coffee (somewhere away from the desk that I'm hardly ever at because I do all kindsa stuff in all kindsa places depending on what wastepaperbasket fire I'm putting out at the time) ....

Callum✭✭I dont so much care for if the event gets extended , but i sure as *** am not paying for my account for 3 days that i cant use, thats the same *** as if your isp / tv / cellphone provider is taking a *** and you cant use one of them or all 3 , then you tell X company, look here i want compensation and were not talking 3 days of free tv or internet, no were talking a month or two of compensation and they usually grant it
What i do expect from ZoS is to provide compensation to people keeping a subscription running, you're paying their salary and their servers afterall , its 3:30 pm in most of Europe right now and none of their customers can play it or those NA people who get up in the morning to play either.2 -

Things may have changed since I was in the industry but 0900 was middle of the night. We tended to start trickling in around 1000 and work 'til all hours. Only staff that held to "regular business hours" weren't involved in coding, support, etc., they were usually the beancounters and office staff.
Perhaps that has changed in the last decade.
