    Chains or bust.

Tanking can be really really fun on all classes, but chains just keep DK leagues ahead of any other class.

As Taylor said DK's have chains which is a huge bonus, I've seen some great Stamplar Tanks in Trials but they just lack the group support that DK Tanks have, I think it's easier to learn/tank on a DK tank so I have a lot of respect when I see a Great Tank on another class.

But aren’t all but 2 dk abilities magic based?

How does that work with the needing stam for blocking?

I only run 14k mag on my DK Tank and 27k Stam, Your only reapplying your Buffs like Volotile/Hardened Armour, Igneous Weapons, Igneous Shield every 10-20 seconds so don't need much Mag at all. Only time you'll burn through Mag is when your Chaining a lot of adds in or using Talons for CC, by the time you run out the adds are dead.

Just count which mechanics tamplar has to tanking and than compare to dk - answer will be so stupidly obvious.

I may actually try swarm mother set:
(2 items) When you block an attack from an enemy that is further than 5 meters from you, you spin strands of spider silk to pull the enemy to you. This effect can occur once every 1 seconds.

Could be a good replacement for chains.

It is but a dk can slot bloodspawn or Lord warden for more group utility and still stack mobs. And hold them in one spot too, something all tanks but sorcs and wardens, to an extent, lack.

All classes can absorb damage, the important question is how much team ulitiy can each class provide on top of it instead of being an useless damage sponge.
The fact that dks can generate stamina while blocking helps too. (Zos why do you design trial bosses as perma block situations while trying to get rid of perma blocking?)

it is widely regarded that stam dks make the best tanks overall, esp in end game content. when i heal, id rather heal a dk tank than a templar tank. templar tanks are too squishy and cant manage resources well as a dk. yet i see so many templar tanks in dungeons....

Igneous shield spam. Burn Marika and with the passive it gives you stamina. Also dk's have better group utility overall.

Definitely, Igneous Shield is a plus when you have a StamDK tank with hp 60k or more. I don't rely on the chain much, though. I understand a lot of peeps prefer a DK tank with chain, but that is a lot of majiicka cost (3500 a pop; plus Igneous is another 4k), which a StamDK tank doesn't really have. Damn peeps, I'm already keeping the big boss at bay and throwing 7k or more shield on you. Plus, the Magma Shell ultimate adds more shield to you. Do your job as dps and burn down those sorry arse adds. Ha ha. Most of my majicka is reserved for the Igneous and Burning Embers. We have gotten through trials and whatever group contents just fine without the chain.

Sure.. it is a friggen tank, but is a "StamDK" tank. My 70k hp DK, with 19k stamina and 12k majicka, is a friggen tank, but it's a "StamDK" tank, which I use 2H on the other bar. My other 40k hp DK, with 21k majicka and 16k stamina, is also a friggen tank, but it's a "MagDK" tank, which I use a lightning staff on the other bar. Get it.. do you get it..?

You sound like kind of an expert on DK tanking ...
Can you please tell me what are the “must have” abilities you need slotted when tanking? Also the “probably want” skills?

Also if you don’t mind... could you compare/contrast tanking with magika vs stamina build? I want to make a playable tank and not sure which way to go ...

On my dk I can survive a while alone because of gdb, same with warden and polar wind. There is a much more demanding stam return issue on a templar (repentance needs a rework from the ground up. Read: make rune focus restore stam or mag depending on max value...), but it is fine issue you plan for it and know the fight.

Not having an aoe root/add pull also hurts D:

i would not use GDB on my tank, i use igneous shield then vigor, better heals and more team support. my dk is actually a full on stam dk, i just switch out armor, bs, ebon, DG, with stam sets i have, SoM, hundings and agility with a master sword and vma bow back bar, she is then able to do desnt dps, like 25k dps, i am aware that is not going to set the world on fire but more then enough dps for most thing in the game and everything that i run as a dps on her. like 34k helath as tank, 17k as dps with 36k stam and 3k weapon damage.

GDB is the best selfheal in the game, there's no reason not to use it as a DK. When used properly it heals for 30k...40k and more...vigor and the other hand just tickles for 2k or so...not worth it if you are not using powerfull assault.
