You're just talking about the Midyear Mayhem event. Normal server performance is just peachy for me and no, the game is not going to die before Christmas. Dude they have a concrete schedule of 3 DLC and 1 Chapter EVERY year.

Don't get me wrong the game will survive but the hardcore pve scene is just about dead, on console anyways. It will only get worse as the really dedicated players leave for games like D2

Compare and contrast steam numbers of active players this month vs the month before morrowind. Biggest fail patch ever.

Steam is only a small fraction of the player base. And population always spikes in MMOs around expansions and events.

The subreddit population has never been higher, and continues to rise every month.

Same deal with the sub reddit pop, it peaks at around 1200 now and was well over 1700 in may

Yes, because May was the eve of Morrowind. Population always spikes around expansions, like I said.

My point is that 3 months after morrowind fewer people played then BEFORE it dropped.

This is somewhat true. It all started decades ago, but I'd say roughly 10-12 years ago is when I'd say the video game industry hit critical mass. Ever since then it was all profit concern and ingenuity and inventive game-play took a back burner role.
There could be a lengthy discussion here and I'm not trying to start a situation here...Microsofts 360 took the world by storm and even though the PS4 is whooping Micro's arse right about now, it's no secret what their console did for the video game industry, especially in the capitalist states.
It was a win/win situation that turned into a profit/screw gamer's situation. But once any industry hits that type of popularity it's bound to wind up like it did in a capitalistic society. There aren't just gamer's, developers, publishers...there are investors as well. I think as the industry started becoming more and more popular and more and more profitable developers got less and less say and the clutch choices and game decisions started to lean more and more into the publishers/investors hands.

It's sad for many gamer's. But it is also a testament to what started as pong, tanks, arcades, eventually moving into homes, and now...it's the largest entertainment industry in the world.
So now it's a finance shark. But every now and again we see a shining star, a beacon in the muck come through with a gem. I'd say those are coming mostly from Indie style developers now with a primary focus on the gamer's. But let's just go ahead and put Bethesda & Zenimax in the mix. Bethesda is one of those crews who love gaming and I feel it's a company built by gamer's for gamer's, Zenimax builds their Online version of The Elder Scrolls world...so I call ESO and The Elder Scrolls in general a win/win for gamer's...but even giants are susceptible to disease and infection.

But to answer the thread title? No, I very highly doubt this game will be anywhere close to dead come Christmas. I'd say it will only get more and more popular. Which, let's be honest here, is probably why they've experienced as many problems as they have lately. They've got a large population to manage, hater's will be mixed in with those numbers undoubtedly. But they'll work through it and they'll overcome the obstacles...that's what titan's do.
This post is not meant to imply I think any part of this game and or the production team(s) involved are poisonous, toxic or out to screw their customers. I rather enjoy the entire experience immensely, and even though the game might have a hiccup here or there that's not going to stop my enjoyment of the game. I genuinely love ESO, I personally think it's lightning in a bottle in certain respects. I'm sure you'll all understand that I was mainly discussion the industry as a whole when I spoke of certain things above.

I've only just started this game (really started) and I can't find anything to hate about it so far. Dislikes, sure, raging I quit stuff, no. I'm glad the support is here, I'm glad the forum(s) are here, I'm glad that I can experience this game for what it is and I'd like to just say thank you...I'm having fun.

according to the full timeline from steam that you can view here (and bear in mind this is a fraction of the community)

    http://steamcharts.com/app/306130

we currently have more players then when steam launched.

there are peaks and drop offs for ever released DLC, the least impactful of them seems to be thieves guild (it held steady) and the most detrimental of them was imperial city (called it)

every other DLC brought back players then dropped off (as is consistent with all DLC for ANY game EVER) we also have slight bumps in the graph for events

however one tamriel was the largest resurgence of players on steam (and has held onto a lot of those players) and following that the housing update was just as huge.

it seems one tamriel and housing were the biggest updates this game has seen as far as bringing in new (and holding a lot of) players

and as I noticed before we currently have more players on steam playing ESO then when it launched up through one tamriel (there are more players now then there were in the entire first 3ish years)

the take away from this is that huge free game updates draw in more players (and hold them) then DLC, though they would not have known this until the one tamriel launch and then housing confirms as such.

so I predict more huge free game updates in the future to grab new players, then DLC for everyone to buy and keep the game going etc.

just like it was dead any one of a thousand threads about its demise before.

me thinks eso will be alive tomorrow and thru christmas and for some time to come.

Obviously we cannot wager but you want to agree to revisit this thread then as see who is right?

if eso is dead then i will sing your praises sd prognosticator and give you an awesome... will you promise the same for me if it is alive then or will you prefer to just let this one more baseless prediction easily forgotten once the noise has passed?

Mostly I'm trying to raise awareness, to get it fixed. A rather aggressive stance brings this to people's attention, we're tired of the lag it needs to go and is no longer ok

Well, gee i did not consider that maybe a malcontented post postulating the game may well be dead by christmas would spur the devs and support staff to notice they have had those server issues and that something should be done more than actually having those issues hit their game in actuality would...

maybe you are right and sudden rushes into the office to deal with down servers and connections and putting in new campaigns and such was not something they nboticed but hey they will surely notice your post cuz you said so convincingly it would be dead by christmas...

that is some unassailable planning there...

    well done!!!

So i guess the check back at christmas to see if your prediction was just full of crap is a no-go. then?

Not everyone has suffered performance issues by any means, and most report seeing plenty of players around. There are a few forum malcontents as there are in any game especially when it's been out a while, but they're not remotely representative of the population in the game which is the only one that matters. The game's doing fine, so no need to panic about it dying before Christmas - although I note that you're careful not to specify which Christmas  !

After 2 solid months of loading, screens game crashes, 15 fps, bugs, crit rush into loading screen crash I think you would sing a different toon. Most content players live close to the server

Don't take this personal, but in every single game I played, (WOW, Swtor, Aion) a significant part of the forum community was SURE that the game was dying, players were leaving in doves and the game might end/die until X. Strangely the games are all still around.

In your case I must say, I have not experienced any significant lag in the last weeks. (EU PC)

No matter how much content your game may have it is not enough to keep player retention for many years to come, what matters is performance, reward, and somewhat of a balance. ESO doesn't have any of that. Everything is broken RNG, a lot of important gear locked in BOE, end game content is not rewarding, and most of all nothing is fun.Once you reach the end point you truly see how shallow this game truly is. Also Nobody wants to farm something just so it can get nerfed due to zos's inconsistent balancing that has been piling up each year after year. This game's own weight of errors are it's downfall. It's just too much.

This is coming from a grand overlord, flawless cumperor. So i know pvp and pve to some extent. Never did any hm trials because what is the point other than to stroke my ego against the only two competitive trials guild in ps4 na. BG's was supposed to be what i wanted but it turns out it was also a disappointment. Good thing i did not bought morrrowind and just waited what the other top pvp'rs had to say. It turns out all of them are still roaming around in cyrodiil. Nobody plays bg's.

The only two positive things i can think of that zos ever did was to give us text chat for console and damage numbers, which is funny because those were already in PC and some of them are not even made by zos. The ability to trade our gear within group members which it should had been there from the start same as text chat for console. Other than that everything else has been cancer, the sets, balance, performance, and the lazy fluff content to keep casuals happy such as houses and furniture that they get from already pre-existing file text codes within the game and just copy and paste it. Also charging them 40$ or even more for re skinned mounts. LOL.

Me and my friend are playing Fortnite now. I guess zos does not realize that new games come out each year. They NEVER alleviated performance in cyrodiil. The past event, it was the WORST two weeks i ever had pvp'ing.

Destiny 2 may be a MMO, but it's not s MMORPG, it's more aimed at the twitch shooter kiddies. ESO meanwhile is honestly more and more these days aimed at roleplayers, I'd say the biggest competator to ESO is honestly SWTOR (which it beats hands down)
