Will magicka tanks be able to function with the new shards/orbs functionality? 3.0.1 Role diversity.

Genuine question. Has anyone run trials or anything with a magicka tank to see if they can get by? Where does stam return come from now with the shards and repentance changes?

I'm primarily speaking from a nightblade point of view since we also lost our stam return from Siphoning Attacks, but magicka tanking on all classes is looking pretty gloomy right now.

Using equilibrium to convert health into mag, then Siphoning attacks to convert mag into Stam is no longer a thing because it wasn't fast paced engaging combat, it also wasn't a creative way to manage resources, so there is now a much better way to manage resources. It's called heavy attacking.

Because managing resources through actively using skills synergies and engaging in the class abilities and dynamics wasn't "fun." Taping down LMB is much better. You will eventually learn to love it.

If you want to "magicka" Tank, then use a Frost staff.

The general setup for magicka tanking right now is snb + frost staff, alternating blocking on each bar as time to regen the other stat. Besides, snb main bar tanking is way stronger than frost staves. I'm just asking if anyone's done trials as a magicka tank on PTS yet.

magicka tanking was never viable in serious content. most magicka tanks were not guilty of perma blocking anyway, it was block the attacks that would stun you, and spam heal through everything else.

healer / tank Templars were viable at this.

high stamina and high magicka *regen* builds were a thing to take advantage of things like helping hands.

but as far as tanks that would tank with their main stat being dumped and there off stat pumped? I don't think such a thing exists, and if it does its so rare and not viable that they should be happy they are being encouraged away from it. as well I doubt they were even using things like orbs or shards in the first place.

While my guild probably agrees with you. Sap tanking vDSA by using the Siphoning attacks skills on my nightblade was some of the most fun I've ever had in this game. If you have a MagBlade I encourage you to give it a try before it's gone.

You must not be familiar with the sap tank. This build allows permablocking by spamming magicka abilities with siphoning attacks active. On live, siphoning gives all of your abilities a 10% chance to give you roughly 2k magicka and stamina back. This allowed you to regain stamina while blocking, but is no longer possible because of the siphoning changes on pts.

Dragon knights do something similar with helping hands, spamming earthen heart magicka abilities (usually igneous shield) to regain 5% of their stamina per cast.

i am familiar with both but as you said the siphoning gutting destroyed it far more then the way the new orb/shards work.

further more I am correct in that sap tanks were not used in end game trials.

as well I don't recall sap tanks relying on orbs or shards, as their sustain was built in using said skills and not group synergies.

I do feel bad for NB tanks out there though, as they have just gotten beat into the ground so much recently. I really hope they get some utility back soon.
