When the sub model was tried (and as many have said, failed) it was on PC only, with a lot fewer players

It didn't fail because it was a sub-model per se, it failed because it wasn't a value for money sub-model with the game in the parlous state it was then.

Significant improvements to the game since launch, most notably 1T, and the Craft Bag have not only vastly improved the overall game, but also added value to the Subscription benefits.

All that said, the Sub Model was ALWAYS going to be optional - regardless of what ZOS claimed back at launch.
    Why?
Because the game was always intended to be multi platform, and no one was going to be happy if they had been forced to pay both the monthly console-network subscription AND an ESO subscription. With a Sub as ab optional extra with a few benefits there were always going to be console players who would be OK with that.

And they could simply NOT get away with having an optional Sub on Console but a compulsory Sub on PC.

So whatever rhetoric ZOS were throwing around back then was just smoke and mirrors - the moment it was decided the game was going to be multi-platform was the moment that it was also decided a Subscription was going to be optional; and I bet that was LONG before any major public announcements were made about the game.

You are getting value on each crate. Even with the bare bones items.

There's only one way to test that.

Put those bare bones items in the store at a set price and see what sells.

I'd bet that less than 50% of the junk would sell at all.

And that means there's no real value in those "bare bones" crate items, they are just smoke and mirrors to make you think got something worthwhile, when all you really got was the middle-finger from some ZOS bean-counter.

So many people keep on supporting the crown store tactics ZOS uses with the reasoning of, "ZOS has to make money, we have to support the game." Ok, well, let me plant a seed of an idea for a moment on the current state of poor ZOS, who many people seem to believe are desperate for financial support.

Ps4 has ranked eso+ has one of the top selling add-ons for the second year in a row. There are millions of subscribers on ps4, multiple millions. I'll assume Xbox also has at least a million, probably close but shy of the numbers on ps4. I will also assume with the PC being a larger market that has been around longer, there are more on PC than ps4.

To be as fair as possible to ZOS though, let us keep the numbers as humble as possible. By the reports from Sony, there are multiple millions of subs. So, let's say just 2 million. We'll be generous again and say only 1 million on Xbox, and maybe just 3 on the PC.

Even being generous, that gives us across the platforms 6 million subs to eso+ (the actual number is much higher).

I'll use cost in my area because that's easiest for me, the cost will vary depending on where you are though. I pay $18 per month for eso+.

With our low estimate of sub numbers, that puts monthly profit just from subs at $108,000,000 per month! Now add the fact you also pay for the base game, dlc (for those without eso+), now we have expansions coming, also sold for cash, and to top it all off, all of the corporate shenanigans of the crown store.

Honestly, just how much do people think it costs to run an mmo? I can tell you for certain, it is far shy of 108 million dollars a month, and ZOS makes much, much more than that.

    So to sum up TL;DR:
ZOS are greedy pigs. Yet people defend them and think they need more money to survive?

That's my last rant, I'm done for a while, I personally experience too many bugs and tech issues, when coupled with the greed of their marketing structure, well, I'm going to go play something else until the 20th, then I'll kill some time in Andromeda. Maybe after some time ZOS will clean up their act and fix some things, and maybe structure the game a bit more fairly. I won't hold my breath, but I hope, I love tamriel, I just can't stand ZOS anymore.

Thank you for the time if you read all of that, apologies to those that may disagree, happy journeys in tamriel all.

I said I wasn't gonna buy any since last time I got the 15 crate bundle and got a lot of hooey... but dangit if I didn't buy the 4 crate bundle as soon as it popped up! ugh!

But I got the Wild Hunt Guar mount.... so I guess I did okay. :) And decided to quit while I was ahead, not gonna buy anymore! (til the next time I cave lol)

The Guar mount is my favorite! Grats!

This is the other problem with the gambling crates.

I'd buy the Wild Hunt Bear, Wolf and Horse outright, even if they were £15/$20 or so.

But I wouldn't use that Guar mount if ZOS gave me one for free AND gave 1,000 gold for every in-game mile I traveled on it. Same goes for the Camel. I may use the Senche if it were given to me for free - but wouldn't waste even 1p trying to gamble for one.

When you buy an RNG, you get RNG. So if you want RNG in purchased items to end, you dont buy RNG. Because if you DO buy RNG, then you send ZOS the message that it's acceptable. That's the whole thing in a nutshell. You can whine about ZOS all you want to, but by buying them, you told them it's acceptable. Your fault, not ZOS'
