What are the benefits of buying a house?

Do I get any passive buffs just for entering, food buff duration? Questing for house materials or is it there just to look pretty? If it's there to look pretty then I might as well sleep in the woods chilling with my Lamia and Daedra companions.
Friend: This one has a cool joke to tell. Want to hear?
Me: Sure okay.
Friend: What can a frozen band-aid be applied on?
Me: This one don't know. Tell me.
Friend: A cold cut. Get it?? hehehe
Me:.... *activates Grim Focus!*
Friend: No wait! it's a joke! please!

    A) To look pretty

    B) Have fun decorating

    C) Roleplaying

    D) Target dummies (DPS tests)

    E) Look pretty

    F) Learning furniture crafting to sell to people who care more about their pretty looking houses than you do :)

    G) Oh yeah! Dye stations/crafting stations. Especially attunable ones so you don't have to trek so far for the annoying ones to get to.

You can put down an target dummy who is nice for training rotation, you can also put down crafting stations.
Nothing more outside fun or rp.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

All of this, plus you can teleport there for free from anywhere in the world.

Not all of that will appeal to everyone. Some people really don't care for it at all. If you're not sure you could always get one (or two or three) of the free inn rooms to play around with and see if you want to spend more on a bigger house after that.

I suppose that's one bright way to look at it especially for the attune crafting. I just hope they add other cool concepts for housing in the future.

I only use mine for dps test dummy and monster bust trophy room at the moment.

But as other people have said, you have cratfing and dye stations and free teleport.
Plus I'm sure more features will be added in the future.

    This.

Aside from these reasons, there's zero reasons to buy a House in ESO. This is the most bare-bones Housing addition of any MMORPG... ever.

ZOS didn't even give their players HALF of the features that come standard in Housing in every other MMO...

The main benefit is that you are given a possibility to use imagination and create something from scratch.

In serious answer to the actual question: Housing is meant to be the vehicle for the new furnishing system. It's meant as a creative outlet where you can have a place in Tamriel to call your own and decorate.

In short, yes. It's there to "look pretty."

There are a couple small benefits and perks: the free teleports to any of your houses are nice, and with master writs you can get a DPS testing skeleton and crafting stations put in your home.

But overall? It's basically a little playground you can decorate to your taste, and whatever you get out of it is whatever you put into it, creatively speaking. Some people create mini-games like mazes and jumping puzzles, while other people roleplay taverns, inns, and, yes, brothels. Meanwhile, other people are decorating their houses to certain themes, like Dark Brotherhood sanctuaries, witch's caves, and hunter's cabins. You get out of it what you want out of it. I've likened it to Minecraft before, because it's pretty much the same sort of mindset: you have your own little world and some tools to build it up to your taste... it's more limited than Minecraft, but that's made up by the richer lore and the rest of the game surrounding it.

Personally, I love having one house for each of my characters, and enjoy the challenge of finding the perfect decorations for each of their houses to reflect their stories and personalities. It's immensely satisfying to place items in a way that suggests there are stories attached to them... to know that the pile of fish in the kitchen, the wine bottle thrown on the workshop floor, and the dagger just peeking out from under the pillow all say something subtle but important about the character who lives there. That's what housing does for me.

If that's not your thing? No worries. Get the free inn rooms (and I also recommend the cheap apartments) for the free teleports. Then, sell any recipes you find on the guild traders and never worry about it again. There's nothing wrong with deciding it's not for you. You play how you most enjoy. The important thing is that you're having fun playing the game. :)

The only thing that comes to my mind is to buy & place crafting stations for Imperial City DLC crafted gear so you won't have to go through PvP zone in order to craft this gear...

And btw. I forgot.. training dummies - if you want to test some crazy DPS build that is...

    The rest is purely cosmetics.

I have the crowns to buy a nice place, but it's still not worth it to me at this time. If I want, I can just preview fully furnished and pretend I bought it if I just want to hang out there B)

I need some more functionality if I'm going to spend $80-100 worth of crowns on a house. I'm just going to wait and see if some more features are added with the Morrowind patch. ZOS has been great about listening to what people want and iterating the content on that basis.

Functionality I would love: fishing, farming, a boatyard, banker, storage, auctioneer, etc. Some sort of buffs maybe. Of course, it would need to tie into other game systems. Any kinds of mini-games that could be added to housing would be great. Wider the variability of decor available, the better. For example, what if I really do want to make a vampire's dungeon? What if I want a deluxe coffin/crypt to rest in by day? How will I keep my thralls? Can I keep thralls? etc.
