Crap! The cops are here :o

Seriously, though, I don't disagree with the OP that people being purposely offensive/trolling/rude is annoying. But, you know what I do? I freaking block them. That's it. I don't make a forum post and cry about how ZOS should censor people, because that's ridiculous when you have the ability to fix the issue yourself. I'd understand if ZOS didn't give you the tools to fix this yourself, but they do. If you can't handle some turd flaming in zone chat, how do you even cope with real life? It's a very "I'm at the center of the universe" way to look at the world to expect that everybody else should have to bow to your sensibilities. Time to grow up.

ESO, on zone chats, at times, seems to be an opposing views episode on CNN, versus being a video game where you come to escape those crap news of everyday turmoil. Yes, you can turn off zone chat (I do and often times change locale) and can even use profanity filter, but, that is not the point. It is the principles.

God forbid people discuss non-game related things where such an act is 100% allowed.

Are you one of those safe-space people?

Sorry but I don't come to the game to listen to pre-pubescent kids trying to act like they are some tough guy. I don't get offended by any of it, on the contrary I actually enjoy making them look silly. There is a place for political discussion, eso isn't it. The only reason for it is the attention. Adults, or so called adults, should have the common sense to know the difference between friendly banter and being flat out insulting. Racial slurs and the other nonsense that gets town into zone chat is unacceptable, and if you don't know the difference, well sorry cant help you.

I still believe that those same people who like to pull those stunts would not have the courage to do so in someone's presence. It's a lot different when you can hide and make comments with fear of reprocussions.

That last sentence is 100% correct and is 100% the reason these people shouldn't bother you. If you let them bother you it's mission accomplished for them, they win.

Don't make things worse by trying to be political correct on the internet, so some ppl are insensitive , big deal, if you don't like certain kind of players then don't interact with them , more often than not those who make "bad" comments are just normal dudes venting and should not be taken seriously , point is , you can't hope to change how ppl think ,and by limiting their freedom of speech in a game you won't make things better because it will just encourage the marginalized individuals to bind together and eventually do more damage , like ---- voting for donald trump.
There is a CoC which prohibits that kind of speech though, because ZOS (and most MMO companies) do want to create a safe environment for people.

They want their game to be a place where people with any kind of past or issues can log in and feel secure in that they won't face abuse or see people openly having the freedom for derogatory or hate speech.

As I said before in the real world there is a place for debate and showing how these kind of things are negative to the world and one another, however within the game ZOS choose how much to protect people and and they have clearly laid out that whilst swearing and some smack is fine, derogatory or hate speech is not.

OP, you got my support with this thread. We have a lot of people not knowing how to respect one another which can clearly be seen in this thread as well. It's unfortunate. Not sure if you're on console or PC. But I do know that Sony takes matters like these very serious :)

What you're saying is somebody should be censored for speech you don't agree with? Would it be OK to arrest a person that says something offensive?

In Sweden you can get arrested for hate speech, in California you do as well. I don't know about the state you live in.

We don't need moderation like a communist Nation. We are a free thinking and speaking nation. I think you need to get over it. Its the way of the world. You have tools at your disposal for you to use. You have the option to turn on the filter for cursing and you can simply use your ignore list for those, who you think, make offensive statements.

If you don't want to participate in conversations on certain topics then don't. Reading chat is an option. Dictating what is or is not an appropriate conversation is a fairly narrow minded view, perhaps even fashious. In the end is is Zenimax'suing house and their call to decide what topics are taboos. If these things really bother you, why not try directing your comments and discussion to targeted individuals, instead of running to a soap box in a different environment?

Yeah zone chat can get pretty toxic. When it gets to that point I turn it off. To be honest, people role-playing bother me more than people talking smack. I actually like to chyme in at times in order to troll the people arguing. If people are getting bothered by what they're seeing in zone chat then block the individuals or turn off chat. Silencing people because what they say offends you is an issue with the person being bothered rather than the person saying the offensive words.

I am not sure the UK is any less strict on hate laws, in fact haven't we been getting stricter since radicalisation and the rise of groups like Britain First?

Again I think it depends what's being said. If you're using four letter cuss words sure enough then people need a thicker skin, if you're using hate speech or bragging about sexual assault then you sure as hell need to slapped.

I mean to use my case from earlier as well. What do you think will happen in the real world if someone walked down the street yelling about how they sexually assaulted someone? You're going to have the police there.

Online however people don't have to worry about that (unless ZOS contact interpol with the logs) so they think this is funny, they know it's wrong but they're not scared of any consequence.

In EVE Online now you can actually get a ban for using a common slur for a homosexual man, CCP outright do not allow that stuff and even if it's just some meaningless smack talk you're risking your account.

Me personally I don't get offended, but there is a line when things cease to be amusing. Fact is its a weak minded individual that doesn't have the enough self control to not make comments. Then we have the trolls that just love to start an argument because they can hide behind a screen without fear of reprisal. Funny thing is every little jab in your above post, weak minded, coddled, infantile are perfect to describe your behavior in the posts you have here.

To the rest of the posters:

This is what a troll looks like in their natural environment. Remeber please don't feed the trolls.

It's unfortunate, the first part of your post started off well and I'd concluded that I'd probably have a reasonable discussion with you...and then I got to the rest of it where you labeled somebody you disagree with as a troll. Sad that your reasoning abilities end at emotion instead of logic. Maybe you'll grow out of it. Also, it is a childish way to live your life to expect that everybody will tailor their speech to accommodate your sensibilities. That's how life works, and it's unfortunate you seemingly can't deal with it.

Sorry but that is exactly what you are doing. Had you not resorted to insults I would have been much more likely to respond in kind. While we have freedom of speech, this is not unlimited, as many who threatened the President have found out. Now being a veteran, I will absolutly stand up for free speech. And yes you can use racial slurs or whatever else you feel like, I'm not offended in the least. Because I have served with many different races and religions, and I know what someone's character is and not just a color, ethnicit or religion, is what makes up a person. I have served with some absolutely great people from different backgrounds, races and such, I have never based my opnion of someone based on the above.

As far as myself, I've seen enough in my lifetime to not get bothered by comments. And as raf as having a reasonable discussion with someone I would point to your first post. It's pretty hard to have a conversation with someone who thinks they are being logical when in fact they are far from it. A logical person does not resort to insults to people without any provocation. There isn't any emotion involved on my end, all of my comments have been very clear. And while the op has good points some of it he/she will need to realize that some people are just that way, and posting in here will bring out more of those types of people.

The bottom line is the ones making the comments that are offensive are the ones who are acting childish. Just because we have free speech doesn't mean it's always a good idea to use it. In fact some should probably learn some restraint when talking period. A wide man once said "it's better to be thought a fool, than open your mouth and remove all doubt".
  • Kevin_of_Devinshire
Just hit ignore, walk away, Just don't look at the chat. There are no "safe-spaces", there is no PC speech, something only bothers a person when they let it. Everyone has been given the tools to clean up chat, just have to use them. There is no need for a police state.

That last part I would love to see being implemented in this game. Way too much of that. Any racial slurs/sexual preference slurs and should you get a permaban. I mean not everyone lives in those states where those type of slurs is every day life. :/

The world and its people cannot be sanitized, and it is not Game developers responsibility to try. Report behavior that violates the terms of service, and ignore others that you find bothersome. If you're not able to do that, online MMOs may not be a good place for you. "Safe" places, and even games, are being created all over the Internet. Perhaps you would be more comfortable seeking out those.

Definitely this. The issues outlined by the OP are issues that go far above and beyond a simple video game. If you want to change things, set the example and hold people accountable in REAL life. We don't need more safe spaces, we need more thick skin and plain talk. If you want a sanitized game, go play Sims. At least you get housing WITH storage and furnishings right away. (dig at Homestead) I'd much prefer the developers to focus on fixing their lagfest, glitchy, disconnecting game. (dig at PVP). :)

Freedom of Speech and how it applies to the internet.

For those who can't be bothered to take the time to actually read the links above --

    TL;DR

Regardless of what country you are from:

"Remember this when you speak on the internet. While internet spaces (ingame or forums) may feel like the new "public square," they aren't. Many players don't read the forums so perhaps ZOS should have a reminder that hate and other inappropriate speech is reportable and there should be a tool tip explaining how to report and ignore someone. Perhaps there already is one and I haven't noticed it?

Either it's all OK or none of it's OK. Welcome to life, you must be new here. Is it unpleasant to deal with jerks? Yes. Should you be allowed to censor them? No. The reason we got to where we are today is that entire generations of people have now been raised to expect that they'll be coddled for their entire lives to the point where people whining have now outnumbered the number of offensive people. That's how we got here.

I will add to this, the reason we are where we are today is because of lack of thinking. Colleges ate teaching these kids that they are in fact special. Point in case, when Trump one the election, colleges had to offer counciling and move test dates back. Parents allowing their children to do whatever without consequences. Look at the protesters that hide their faces when they start to riot. If you feel that strongly show your face. Just know that all actions will have consequences. Same thing goes for speech. Hoe many of those kids in game shouting racial slurs and such would do the same thing in front of actual people? My guess is it wouldn't be many.

This the hallmark of why censorship is bad. Who approves what is okay? You, and your moral compass? Waving with either hand is normal and customary in the US, doing so with your left hand in some middle eastern countries is considered an insult, should we then outlaw waving in all manners so at not offend anyone? Freedom, in all forms, exists at its zenith when it protects the things you the detest you the most, not when your beliefs are upheld. It is slippery slope when an individual becomes the decider of what is allowable and what it not. For the things that are truly inappropriate take the opportunity to utilize the report function, the block/ignore function, and ultimately the don't let pixels on a screen bother you function. What I find funny and what you find inappropriate could be the same thing and neither of us are wrong.
