On one hand, it's probably coming out of Bethesda's marketing budget and not really impacting ZOS or game development at all.

On the other hand, Overwatch is probably the only game on the market now that could possibly benefit from a Super Bowl ad investment.

And there's that other tiny thing. Right, don't spend millions of dollars advertising just hours before you're taking an entire platform offline most of the day for maintenance. That one we probably can blame ZOS for...

Just curious (not American) but is there a large cross over between those who would watch the Superbowl and those who would play MMOs? From the Guilds I am in on the NA server, there isn't ever much talk about football, so I was under the impression there wasn't.

A few of my guildies from FFXIV were pretty hardcore football fans. They would talk about their teams sometimes in chat. I just sorta tuned them out.

While Im sure ZoS has done well financially, I think the marketing side is still on Bethesda's call. Note even in the announcement video, Pete Hines was there as marketing vp of Bethesda softworks. Which in my mind means he is taking care of the publicity of the game since a) it is a part of the elder scrolls franchise b) Bethesda is overall in charge.

Now I might wrong, I might not be in the loop but what I can tell from the video, that's the vibes I'm getting. There were many instances where Pete nudges lambert on parts of the game that he needs to talk about.

It's a good marketing strategy for Bethesda and ZoS as a whole regardless. There isn't any much to say about any of the franchises that Bethesda has, except for this; the elder scrolls online. It's good that they are riding this wave of hype. Hopefully they manage to keep up to the expectations.

I hadn't heard about a half billion dollar lawsuit but good on them I guess. I know one of the co-founders was originally a law major so no surprise ZOS lawyered up hardcore.

I thought I noticed a lot more people playing lately...

Hopefully this is a sign they are doing well and won't have to resort to further sleazy Korean F2P tactics like gambling crates in the future.

Thanks to all those who responded to my question about the crossover between those watching the Superbowl and those who play MMOs. :)

I know the adverts get a good deal of publicity outside of football anyway on the Internet, so that together with the Morrowind name will hopefully garner enough sales, but it is good to know that there will be those watching the game who upon seeing a blue woman stood under a giant mushroom, won't just be wondering who the heck spiked their drink. :D

Yall watching the superbowl to see the commercial?

Might bring in some NEWBIES lol.

This clarifies what I thought; Zos has no idea who plays mmos. The massive amount of money spent on a superbowl ad, could've bought them a lot of ads on a channel more likely to be watched by a gamer. 5.5mil for a 30sec slot.
Maybe the 5 mil could've bought them a better server that doesn't lag out constantly.

Except a spot at the SuperBowl isn't "advertising" anymore. It's corporate communication at this stage. The message isn't "buy this product", it's "we're a big, powerful, healthy, rich, profitable, long-lasting, solid and reliable company". Whether it's true or not is a different story, but that's the message, directed not only at customers or potential customers, but also at investors and competitors.

I'm not american either but I think that the "event" is not the football game anymore, the half-time show IS the event. Many people will switch on TV just for the show. It's pop culture more than sport culture, and gaming is part of pop culture.

I doubt it is the audience watching the Superbowl that they are aiming at, although it's a nice bonus. Superbowl adverts have become an 'annual' event on Social Media. I don't live in America, I don't watch American Football, heck I rarely use social media platforms, yet I have watched plenty of Superbowl Adverts due to the hype around them.

They are releasing Morrowind. The only people likely to know about it so far are players and those gamers who follow gaming news. By releasing a SB advert, it will reach all those gamers and lapse gamers who used to play Morrowind, that don't follow the gaming news. At the same time, it also subliminally sends a messages to all those gamers who either haven't played, or stopped playing at the start of the game because "ESO is dead!1!!!!!1!", that far from dead, they must be doing rather nicely if they can afford SB Ads, so maybe with the launch of Morrowind the game would be worth checking out.

WHAT?!!! The superbowl advert isn't about attracting new players, it is about the prestige of having a superbowl advert. It is a different kind of advertising, putting an advert out during the superbowl is a way if saying "we are a big deal". Sometimes that can attract new customers, but I can't imagine many sports fans will make a mental note about this game. I maybe wrong, but I think a child could have come up with a better advertising strategy than this vanity project.

I really want this game to succeed, but once again I worry the money I spent supporting the development of this game has gone on a "million reasons to play" or a holiday competition or some other lottery/ tax write off that only appeals to idiots and is only accessible to a few countries.

Zenimax just won 500 million in a lawsuit against Oculus Rift for stealing their code.

Ummm I'm no game developing Superbowl commercial buying expert but......

I'm pretty sure, ZoS had to set this spot up at least nine months ago (when the trial was still in the injunction and writ filing stage) They had no clue if they would win or lose then.

No pretty sure this was done because of really good revenue flow and the metrics and belief that they haven't hit their earnings potential yet.

I'd actually agree with that conclusion. Zenimax isn't hurting right now that's for certain. They pull a ton of revenue from consoles. Far more than PC

Yeah just think of what the vote count would have been for GOTY if the console players got in on the action?

they might make most of their money from consoles but the game is still a laggy *** on console, an unpolished mess of a game should never get GOTY.
