Since I caved and bought the elk that is what I am kind of hoping. *hides under a desk*
Then I won't feel so bad splurging on the original one. I was worried I would never be able to get a recolor without the crates. Really I was wanting a white elk. But didn't want to chance it.
A lot of people have experienced this hardship, buying an original just to have a newer, cooler version come out a month later. It's pretty much happened with almost every special mount. Give it a month or so and a new coloring will come out. And no, you won't get access to different coloring ways for buying one type. The point is to get you to spend money. Unfortunately, this is how games are run when people aren't willing to pay subscription fees on a regular basis, and instead demand a free to play model. Judging by the number of atronach mounts you see in the game, quite a lot of people want it.
I agree that crates are a scam and I won't buy them myself. But as long as people continue to buy them, they aren't going anywhere. Almost every multiplayer game released in the past 2-3 years has RNG crates. In each of those games, people cried when they were released. And in each of those games, they were a huge success.
There are a lot of wealthy gamers (either earning their own income or using parents money) as well as problem gamblers. Both buy RNG crates, and there are more than enough of them to make the initiative profitable.

People can vent in these forums all they want and come out with bold statements like "nobody wants these" but the proof is out there. I have seen loads of those crate mounts kicking about.
I don't like the crates, I have a lot of Crowns in my account and have never spent any on them on the crates. Compton1865✭✭Love the Dark Stag and Black Saber Cat mounts. But if these are only going to be available as exclusive drops from the Crown Crates, I'll probably pass. If not, I'm hoping that they won't be ridiculously overpriced (like the original Stag mount).
I like the idea of the Crown Store (and appreciate that it consists of cosmetic items), but many things have become quite costly, compared to when I started playing the game a few years ago.

Not quite true.Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

Thats the beauty, you never know. Generally speaking, way more money than you would ever have spent were it in the crown store for a simple supply/demand question.
