and just to confirm, both the hollowjack motifs and hollowjack style mats are fully tradable, right?

I finished the motif in a little over an hour and had all recipes, but no masks yet.
Do Skulls drop from world bosses? I did about 8 of them yesterday and did not get one Skull. I was just farming dolmens and getting a skull every single time. this was in a Gold zone so the enemies were still cp160, but not a single skull from world bosses

they are supposed to drop from any boss

Out of curiosity has anyone noticed a pattern in the mask drops, like what types of bosses/locations they're getting them from? Been farming and have a full set of hollowjack motifs and recipies, and then some, but haven't gotten a mask drop. Was wondering if I should try a different place.

It's just luck/RNG. All skulls are the same, and it doesn't matter where you get your skulls from.

3rd day in, got all the motifs, missing 1 blue and the gold recipe and no masks as of yet,

Not sure if the masks are restricted to certain boss types or just rarer on the loot table.

So far I've got plunder skulls from:

World bosses
Delve bosses
World daedric portal spawns

but nothing from anything under my level (270 CP at the moment, so anything in Cadwell's Silver or Gold, but nothing on my original Alliance quest zones.

Wonder if that'll change when they roll out One Tamriel on the consoles tomorrow?

Over 200 skulls from many different sources; delves, world bosses, maelstrom, dolmans, dungeons, daedric portals. Multiple motif sets and tons of style material.

No masks.

Must be truly rngesus. I just wandered aimlessly killing bosses the first day(world, dolmen, dungeons, delves), and got 6 motiffs (much more than that but 6 that weren't duplicates), 4 purple/3 blue/3 gold recipes, a scarecrow mask, and I think a couple green recipes.

After about 100 skulls. I have the complete motif, plus another full set of chapters, and that does not include the entire set I sold for 299/chapter. All my alts have the recipes, or at least most of the recipes. And, one Mask.

Nice that it is Account Wide at least.

so i've collected all the hollowjack motifs...how do i craft with them? i'm super confused on that part. any help would be appreciated because i cannot seem to find this answer anywhere :-/

so assuming you have opened the motifs to learn the styles and assuming you have at least some crafting skill points assigned....

you basically choose the item you want to craft, scroll down to style section, slide across through all the styles you have learnt, eg Breton, kahjit, orc etc and at the end will be hollowjack (the stones are called amber something).

Add in a trait stone if you wish and craft. Its no different to crafting anything.

Based on the question though, im guessing my assumptions at the start are not true?

I'm done. 3 characters with the title but not one mask. Luckily a mate has been getting lots of them so he gave me one of each.

In threads like this I love to see the assumptions people make about random/chance.
If the drop chance of a mask is 1/100, and you open 200 skulls without a mask; it's still 1/100 chance to get it in the next one.
You're just as likely to get a mask at skull 1 as 100 or 1000 for that matter.

@Cody_svk @altemriel It's not quite that high on the Amber Beads; the most I've gotten is 3 in a skull. On the other hand I ALWAYS get at least one (and yes, I've kept track).

The drop rate on the hats is disgusting. Hundreds of skulls and not a single yellow drop....

I am sure they will end up in the crown store....

Funny, I have found 7 masks and 4 bloody Mara recipes! I used both the scarecrow and pumpkin ones, sold one for 5000 and gave the rest away for free. I gave the spare recipes away for free as well.

I'm a very generous fellow. If you happen to be farming along with me (my character's name is also Shaminar), just ask and I'll give you what you need. No need to pay me, just ask and you shall receive! (bows his draconic head)

Didn't know those even existed in the full form! Good to know.

I farmed exactly 100 skulls (just for the achievement - I hate grinding)

1 of each mask
3+ full sets of recipes
3+ full sets of the motifs

My work on the event is done!

The only real question is what to do with the masks. I showed restraint and didn't open them so I can sell or trade possibly later...

Well, I don't have anywhere near 100 skulls, but I am already full up on motifs, etc. No masks in sight. Also, getting screwed out of skull drops at some places due to mobs just waiting for bosses; can't apparently get enough hits in.

I decided to use this holiday plunder skull thing as a great excuse to get my Cave Dweller achievments, and also sign off on every Dolmen. I know that doesn't help your chances but I thought it'd be fun and be more in the spirit of the quest. So I did it! I went through and completed all the Dolmens and all the Delves - I went zone by zone to cover everything.

But I didn't get a single gold mask drop.

So I started Dolmen, World Boss and Dungeon grinding thinking to myself that I'll use this bad RNG as an excuse to farm up some great equipment to sell. I've got a full time 12 hour a day job plus a 1 year old baby so, you know, I have to stay up late to get in enough hours but, you know what? I did it! I've been farming with all the free time I can spare and I'm wracking up all sorts of weird loots. Some of it even sells!

But I didn't get a single gold mask drop.

I've still got some time but, well, you know in other games there might be some RNG involved but eventually there would be a method of compensation so I'd have a goal in sight. There would be hope.Tickets or Gems I could use to get the goodies. I don't know how many skulls I've farmed but I can tell you this is the longest I've ever spent fruitlessly persuing a festival quest reward in any MMO ever. If only there was some kind of goal in sight here...

But there's no *** goal in sight is there.

I've spent easily over 50 hours farming for a golden mask since finishing the delves and dolmens - and I've got neither of them. I'm pretty close to being done with this game for couple of months. It was annoying to log on this afternoon. It feels like I've reached end game and it's just an RNG grindfest - that's all it's got to offer, that's ESOs loot system. And I don't like it. I am beginning to think I have better things to do with my time *ESPECIALLY* given this is a limited time offer. I can't believe the option existed for them to implement something better for a festival and they passed it by. So maybe I don't drop any more money on the game for a while and go try play something else.

Yeah, you cn put me down as another 'all kinds of angry' voice. Very. Frustrated.

p.s.
You'll note that the only place in ESO right now where there is a 'compensation' for the RNG nature of the system is in the new loot crate mechanics where they offer gems. Why the *** aren't they putting something like that into the normal game?

Yes, the RNG in this game can be frustrating. But at least in this case, there is an escape hatch: you can buy the masks from other players. And the prices that I see being offered in zone chat are already 90% lower than what they were on the first day, because the market's become so saturated with these masks.

In contrast, for people farming vMA weapons, there is absolutely no recourse if RNG screws you over repeatedly.
