I'm working now 28 years in the software business.
I was never on a project were we actual used user input. Not once.
I am sorry for your business.

I had the privilege to work with some of the best games designers of the world, selling titles in millions. Do you know what these people say? They say that many players, playing the game many hours per day, know the game much better than the designers do. The master players try everything and know everthing, every trick, every exploit, every strategy. Therefore, the opinion of the master players is extremely valuable to master designers. Therefore, the master players often are part of a closed company testing group, receiving all titles months in advance, from early alpha over beta to release, to check the new software from a user perspective on balance, bugs, usability and receive user input.

Input from master players is essential for master designers,
is essential for companies selling millions of copies in successful francises for decades.

Sure. Even if I drive 24/7 the next 2 year with my car, it will not make me a car designer or a mechanic. And no, I'll not be able to just paint my car in a professional way.

After two years, I'll know my own car till a certain degree very well, but I'm still only...a driver.

    Hard to accept it seems.

Again, users are useful for raising bugs and problems. But don't let them design the game, the UX, the game ideas and other stuff.

And oh btw, if you only talk with hardcore gamers, then you're doing something really wrong. Noob, medium players and hardcore players all have other desires.

Noob focus on ease of learning, the hardcore ones don't care about that issue, they want more ease of use, flexibility, power and functionality.

Yes, you are just an average guy. But there are other worlds.
In each good F1 team, it is the driver telling the mechanics how to tune the car.
No F1 team has a chance where the car designers or mechanics tell the drivers how to drive.
