Np text chat in game = a slap in the face to anyone who is deaf. It leaves the deaf community with a mmo, that may as well just be single player. No ability to communicate with other players, does not = a good mmo.

Come on game devs, your better than this, stop ignoring those with a disability.

No console text chat = discrimination against the deaf!

To EVERYONE who has quoted me in this thread

There are two different twitch live feeds where this topic has been addressed at different point in each. It's not one part of either. If you're too lazy or it's too much of a bother to go watch all the April and May twitch live's then....why would ZOS take your feedback into consideration.

The reasons I'm not linking specifics is because in April and May I did a detailed post on this topic which was locked in the console beta thread.

If you do not care enough to get the information from the source please do not make negative comments towards me or others.
Feel free to continue your feedback towards ZOS but do bring yourself up to speed on their prior stance, decisions so that your feedback is taken seriously by ZOS.

I'm not for adding it but if you are, at least do yourself the benefit of being relevant in your comments on the subject

Frankly, we don't care what they've said.

The decision is absolutely unacceptable and no matter what they've stated we're going to keep ramming the point home.

They're claiming that know what's best for us, we disagree.

Why would they take any feedback into consideration when the reason you and others are presenting as reason for a change is "we don't accept your reasoning / logic and marketing plans"

Good luck with that type of attitude

    @NewBlacksmurf
So on their official site. In their official forums. There's a Thread. A Thread that has over 28.4k views. That has over 1.2k replies. Not a single one of those replies is from ZoS regarding the topic of said thread. Or communicating their opinion or stance on it either way.

But because they mentioned it on a Twitch stream back in either April or May. There's no need for them to touch on the subject again? And infact if no one has watched those videos, which is most likely considering the game didn't come out on consoles till June, then why should our feedback be taken seriously by ZoS?

Really the question is: Why should we take ZoS seriously? Remember we are their paying customers. They have an obligation to us not the other way around. And that isn't a sense of entitlement it's just regular old common sense.

On a topic such as this, one that's so wildly discussed and debated we shouldn't have to go searching through videos from 2-3 months ago. Especially when they already did a AMA in June at the console release. Giving their reasoning which has already been discredited by the majority.

From your stand point heres a conversation would go:

"We could tell you why text chat isn't in the game. But we we won't. And because you don't know we won't take your opinion or views seriously"

It's up to them to inform their customers and fans, to re-assure them that what they are doing is what they believe is right for the game. There's going to be new players coming to this game every day, not all of them are going to have the forsight "Hey maybe I should watch every single video between april and may to see if they touch on this one subject"

Also why would anyone think to watch old videos looking for an answer when they've blatantly and flat out ignored us on their own forums.

Exactly if it fails on consoles it only hurts the PC version even that much more.

But I will say I honestly don't believe it's a matter of "IF" we get text chat. Text chat will 100% be in the game because they have to. It's more a question of "When" and "How will they implement it".

I am just wondering how many people who don't want text have played a MMO before, or is this there first?

I have never played a MMO before elder scrolls, but I played the PC version before the console. I love the Elder scroll series so much that I went out and bought a gaming Laptop (granted I needed an new laptop anyways) to play the games since they delayed the release on console. If when I played on PC if they had no text I don't think I would have cared, and I think I would not have been able to understand why people want text. I did not understand what a MMO was or what was needed to play it. I bought the game to play as a single player and as a single player I would have no need for text. As I got more into the game I saw what a MMO truly was and how important is was to work with other people. I don't really like talking to a bunch of people I don't know, so I was so grateful that I could communicate with people through text. I could not imagine the game without text, yet I switched over to console because I am a console player at heart not realize how much not having text chat would hurt the game. Maybe I am corrupted by having text chat on PC, and I cant make an open minded opinion on the subject.

I would however like to hear from some people who have played ESO on PC, and have now switched over to console, and don't want text chat. or maybe who have played your fare share of MMO with text chat and you don't want it on eso, Why?

If this is your fist MMO you have ever played and are against text chat don't be so quick to judge it without fist giving it a shot. Granted if they did add it to the game there would be pretty much no chance of them taking it back out of the game.

I personally don't think much of text chat on a console, to be honest, I don't even think it will be used a massive amount. Frankly, most gamers don't have a keyboard that they can connect to a console and even of they did they probably wouldn't. And if you make it so that you use the onscreen keyboard, well I can't speak for the Playstation on screen keyboard but the Xbox one is pretty poor. I get that text chat is a vital part of a MMO on the PC, but on consoles it would likely become a underused service.

Frankly though, console players tend not to communicate well with oher players. I've played plenty of games where communication is key and nobody uses mics for voice chat, even though they have them. This won't change. When I'm playing ESO, the number of people actually speaking online is pretty low compared to the local population of players. Text chat may potentially improve this, but I doubt it would improve it drastically enough, to make it worthwhile.

Also, again I may be wrong, but consoles don't have the hardware that most PC gamers have and text chat may be too much for the consoles to manage effectively which could be a reason for its exclusion. I could be wrong, but I'd wager it's a factor.

Bottom line is, I'm sure ZOS have their reasons for not putting text chat in the console versions, one of them is probably to do with how often it'll be used, another being potentially technical reasons.
Final Fantasy has text chat. DC Universe has text chat. Warframe has text chat. Defiance has text chat. The things you say happen, or will happen, in games with text chat have not happened in those games. It is not an underused service. Console players are fine communicating with each other. Their consoles are handling it just fine. Why does the reality seem so different to what you're saying?

How about they sold a product that is demonstrably faulty, gave faulty reasoning for it, lied about some of those reasons as they proceed to do exactly the opposite of the claim on PC and through all this refuse to respond to a thread that's CATCHING UP WITH THE THREE YEAR OLD 'ASK US ANYTHING' STICKY.

So yeah, think about it from their perspective. Their job is to make a product people want to pay them for and continue to pay them for.

When I paid for the game, there was basically no information on the fact that they were taking text chat out. The PC version had text chat, every other PC to console MMO has text chat on both platforms, and I'm not the only one in this boat. In many ways they sold the product under false pretense.

So again, I don't really care what they've said after the fact, quietly on an obscure thread that's NOT their official forums or on some other external source that one would have to obsessively camp out to learn about.

No text chat is harming the game, dramatically.

So again, I don't care what they've said, and further, I REALLY don't care how they feel. Their feelings are irrelevant, maybe you should be worried more about their job being that their feelings won't feed their families. And that's a lot more important than if they feel sad for a little bit.

No...ESO is a special snowflake. You can't look at other successful games that used text chat. /sarcasm

Seriously, there is no valid reason not to have text chat, except: ZOS can't work it into the UI for technical reasons.

Hell, if ZOS responded and said, "You know what, we aren't good enough developers to give you text chat in the UI we built from the ground up.", I'd take that as a final answer and drop the subject. I'd also lose all remaining respect for ZOS and seriously question whether I support them with purchases anymore (and I don't think I'd be alone), but at least that would be an honest answer.

All these stupid reasons the apologists keep bringing up are not working.
    1. Text chat will split the community. Community is already splitting because of Voice comms only. Text chat may actually bridge the gap and create more communication, because those people who already remove themselves from area chat may have a better way to communicate now, instead of getting their ears blasted.
    2. Console players don't know how to use keyboards or don't want to. Precedence says we do (all the games that have been listed and successful with it).
    3. Text is too hard to read on TVs. See the last point.
    4. Text chat will cause gold selling spam. Really, on PC there isn't gold selling spam from what I understand and it has text chat and the ability for external bot software (which the PS4 doesn't have).
    5. It will ruin the 'mersion. Not if it is able to be disabled completely (hide the window), then you have exactly the product you have now, but the people that wanted text chat would be happy and stop bringing it up.

These "reasons" have zero weight anymore and have been refuted completely.

Well after this game and Destiny for me, from now on, if a "massive multi-player" game on console (not a co-op like Borderlands or Dying Light) does not include:

    1. Voice chat and text chat
    2. Character names displayed instead of gamertags
    3. An auction house

it's going to be a red flag to wait and see purchase. That's not including nice touches like a working grouping system, mini-map, better inventory management, and so on.

I like ESO but it's missing some very basic functions on console.

Trying to coordinate 20 players with voice chat in one group was freaking insane. So much back ground noise (screaming kids, music blasting, all that crap) no one can hear anything.

Text chat simply "everyone go to so and so to defend this keep" would of done wonders verses everyone's crappy mic blasting living room noises and running around like headless chickens. Group leader was going "what I can't hear you, dude turn up your mic, yo you're kids are drowning out voice chat mic off please, someone is playing music too loud who is playing music I can't tell?"

I left the group and roamed Cyrodiil alone with my NB setting siege weapons on fire and ganking stragglers after that non-sense.

    • Acts as a second screen to display mini-map for better navigation through Tamriel.
    • Provides touch controls allowing console players to right click and access to PC buttons such as [E], [F], [X] by swiping with two fingers, tapping with two fingers, three fingers, four fingers respectively.
    • Allows easy access to Crown Store, just swipe with three fingers!
Additional ESO Mobile features will be available through DLC. Subscribe to ESO Mobile+ for access to any future DLC.

Is this for real? Because I can't find it anywhere on the app store. Not exactly the solution I was looking for, either. I'll take it for now, thought, because it shows ZoS is actually working on something at least. It gives me a little hope that they're actually listening.

I can see this being inconvenient while actually playing, but if I'm in a town I have no problem using this app for selling or finding a group.

Personally, I get tired of the response "Text on a tv doesn't look right." Don't give us that excuse, Warframe has a text chat, and I type with my keyboard all the time to clan mates in that game, no problem. Text is crisp and easy to read.

And honestly, stop automatically putting everyone into local chat. Don't put me in ANY chatroom. When I log in, I have to goto the friggen social tab every single time, and remove myself from the local chat, because of squelching/feedback mics, people coughing/sneezing/chewing food, yelling at each other in the house, talking to the person next to them in their house, etc.

"Hi, welcome to ESO. Immerse yourself*SQUELCHING MIC OF EAR DEATH*, have fun with frie*COUGHING AND BEING OBNOXIOUS ON MIC* and explore the worl*THIS GAME SUCKS LAWLAWLAWLAWLAWLAWLAWLAWL*

Understand where I'm going at with this? If I want to talk to the drooling slack jawed idiots around me, I'd rather do it via a chat box where I can atleast pretend they're decent human beings with some semblance of ettiquette when they talk to others, and it's far easier for me to ignore an idiot typing non-sense than it is for me to ignore someone being obnoxious or rude over a mic.

I'd love to trade and talk to people in local, but honestly I think the majority of people do what I do, login, run around for afew moments, then get a rude awakening that they're in the local voice chat(usually by squelching feedback mics or obnoxious people), then quickly goto the social tab and GTFO of local chat as soon as they can click it off.

Best solution: Chat tabs; I'd recommend one for the world/questing zone you're in(i.e. Deshaan, Bleakrock Isle, Stonefalls, Rift, etc), one for the alliance you're in(EbonHeart Pact, etc), trade chat, and opt in chats for your guild and current party, aswell as any private/whisper chatrooms you'd like.

It can't be that hard to implement, and would greatly improve my ability to enjoy interacting with random people in the game. As it is, I avoid every other player there is when it comes to communication. Even with guildies, I don't want to have a mic/headset on constantly when I play, but I'll gladly lounge with a keyboard and talk to everyone in my travels.

Maybe the narration in my head allows me enough facade to enjoy the game, rather than having a total disconnect when someone's squelching mic runs by and ruins any kind of immersion I was enjoying. Nothing kills a solemn moment in a quest chain than someone running by, standing text to you, and you're getting a squelching echo of everything their mic is echoing from their TV.

Don't forget Final Fantasy 14 ARR also has text chat [extremely customizable] on PS3, PS4, PC, playable cross platform and work really well. And we also have the built-in system voice chat if we want voice.

    Hello all,

I want to start by saying I have been having a heck of a time with ESO since migrating to the PS4 version. I can see myself playing this game for years to come, but only if something is done about the in-game communication. I get that we have voice chat, and I get it works when in needs to. But by now, I would imagine a large number of players have grown tired of people blasting their music, swearing, yelling at parents, or parents yelling at kids. and mouth breathing. Tired enough to take steps to mute the in-game voice chat. Oh and I don't recall anyone ever using the quick chat phrases since starting up on the PS$, so that's not really an alternative.

I spent a couple of hours yesterday just floating around town, politely asking for invites to active trade guilds and I only ever got a single invite. If there were a in-games chat feature, I would have certainly gotten better results. I have friends and family that are simply waiting to purchase and play the game until something is done about the lack of communication methods in-game.

So, count me among the many who are requesting in-game chat be added to the game, and soon.

    [/quote]

I do aswell, I'm on a 40inch Samsung at 1920x1080 right now, text is extremely crisp and easy to read.

The text in ESO is much better, and thats ok, because for 'text box' chat, thats just fine. Just as dreatern said, FF:ARR does text chat amazingly well, alot of options for the chat windows, etc.

Honestly, text chat will make the game alot better. Roleplayers, both those who have guilds, and those who like to roleplay at random; will vastly enjoy text chat. Trading will see a huge boon, and I'll gladly talk to everyone around me via text chat long before I'll bother with voice chat.

To me, voice chat is dedicated to my guildmates and friends. Text chat is for strangers, passer-bys, and trading and roleplaying; I have a feeling that most of those who play MMOs feel the same way. Honestly, most of the time I don't even wanna talk to guildies or friends when I'm running around ESO, because they cut into my questing dialogue voice overs; or maybe I have my own music playing in the background and I'd rather hear that than someone on voice chat.

Overall: Add text chat, the game will flourish alot more because of it.

Calm down there. You're a consumer, not a forum moderator.

Id love to not have the "N" word blasted into my ear as soon as I log into the world. An ability to txt in some kind of world chat or "Looking for group" chat would be great for finding groups because you know the group finder is complete trash.

Wait, so ZoS when B2P with a crown store because they said no one on console would pay the xbox1 live and Sony one and the sub for ESOTU. Yet you guys would be willing to pay for an app to text chat in ESOTU?

    Wow, just wow!

    Necessity.

Mainly for me this would be utilized in Cyrodiil, just to let the Alliance know where me and my group would be attacking. Honestly though, it would make the communication and strategy in Cyrodiil much more effective. Needs to happen.
