I miss the people I played with and I miss raiding sometimes. At some point I'll probably pick up that game again, but it won't be the same experience again and the people are gone, so for now I'm content to make ESO my mmo home.

I miss LoTRO from it's heyday Shadows of Angmar.. I used to love the game, and the kinship (guild) I was a part of.. Big up to Hope & Glory! :)

Many enjoyable days raiding 'The Rift' and Helegrod.. along with Carn Dum and Urugarth runs!

LoTRO must have had one of the friendliest and welcoming communities around as well! (Talking from a Codemaster's EU server standpoint).

I think any game would be hard pressed to beat those days in my eyes..
I still go back to it from time to time (I'm a Lifetime VIP) to play through the new content.. as despite it's age the art direction and storytelling are still first rate. I just don't spend an inordinate amount of time gearing up my toon, or raiding any longer.

I miss playing games where people didn't think the game started after they skipped most of it...

Everyone skips so much in modern games to sit at the end level and go "Now what?" You skipped it...There was a game and you skipped it. Too bad you are bored.

    ESO is no exception.
Watching Craglorn be a massive grindfest makes me sad.
    ----

I did go back and play EQ this last fall, and had a pretty good time, but I went back with a group of old guildies. We know why we quit, and the choices SOE made that made us do so, but it was fun to revisit for 3-4 months and see what happened after we left. Community was meh.

I really feel bad for the games that could have been, that got screwed up by bad business choices... especially SWG and Vanguard. With investment and bug fixes that could have been really good games. (Very similar to where ESO is now.)

SWG got eaten by multiple definitions of what it meant to be Star Wars (with LucasArts doing EP 1 retcon brainmelting jedi crapola that won in the end)

Vanguard got eaten by SOE not understanding there was a market for a "harder MMO / more complex" and that is really wasn't (and shouldn't be made into ) a direct competitor to EQ2.

That is pretty much 90% of the internet now. I was thinking about it the other day and when MMOs were first around there was still negativity and hate but nothing close to the scale you see now. I think that was because the internet was not nearly as common, people had not grown up with it yet and they were super happy to have it. People didn't *** about every detail of a game because the entire idea of having a massive online game was just awesome. Even the idea of being able to easily communicate with thousands of players on the boards was pretty awesome. Now people have just taken it for granted and pretty much just use it to vent and expect everything the way they want it now.

People that have grown up with being on the internet their whole lives don't value it, they expect it. They use it as a platform to complain about everything. Look at any famous persons twitter feed you will see people bash them for every single possible thing. Not everyone uses it like that but it seems way more common. People are far more likely to make a post about something they are mad about then something they are satisfied with.

Part of it is as you mention the forums and instant communication now possible. I played mmos for years before i realized there were forums and other places to go and talk about the game. Then add in cell phones and the fact that now i can sit at a job all day and complain about the games i play at night.

I think the instant 24 hour access really pulls the forum down from a place people go to look for info to a place people go to complain about everything that pops into their head.

Yes and No. My last MMO was Final Fantasy XIV. I played it on release back in 2010. I loved it. It had so many problems, very little to do, was grindy as crap but man was it fun. Met so many awesome people to group with and play with. People where nice and friendly. Then Yoshi P. came in and made some changes and it was getting so much better. Then they said "Hey we are remaking the game to be the game you should have got"

Then in 2013 I was so excited to get to play the new revamped version. They promised us it was the game we should have got back in 1.0. And I only played 2 months before I was completely fed up. Small zones that are packed but where not hard at all. Being able to run from the last zone in the game to the first zone in 2 minutes. Enemies who aren't going to kill you. Endless gear grind by running the same dungeon 121132343 times just for someone to ninja loot the drop you where waiting weeks to get, A terrible community where if you didn't watch a youtube video on how to beat a boss you weren't allowed to group up. 5 vs 5 PVP that took no skill it was just whoevers healer could jump the longest. Lag literally built into the game to make content challenging. Scripted battles that never change.

Yeah no thank you. I will stay here and be quite content.

I have to admit I miss the crap out of it too. I even played the Emu pretty extensively and helped with testing the development on Nova.

Does SWG have all the stuff ESO has in it, well not by a long shot. Does it still hold up as a great game .. yes it actually does.

People still enjoy tetris it isn't the worlds most complicated game.

Back in the days new features were judged when they came on the server and not months in advance.

I miss having tons of viable specs from all classes suitable for raiding, as well as melee actually viable...

I miss having tons of viable specs from all classes suitable for raiding, as well as melee actually viable...

I miss the game rewarding you for the effort you put in...

I miss access to a basic mount not being an insane grind unless you pay extra...

I miss replayability of the content where endgame is just the beginning....

I miss bosses that actually require following tight mechanics to beat...

I miss having that one instance where you can chill out socialize with people...

I miss there being tons of things to do outside raiding or dungeon content...

    I miss regular reoccurring events...

I miss I can make my character look how I want...

I miss dungeon queues actually popping...

I miss regular loyalty rewards given to subscribers rather than giving them the shaft...

There's probably a lot more I don't have time to add I probably miss too, in fact I'm having a hard time finding something that would keep me gripped to this game.

I got a mount at 20 it's hardly a grind... And feels good once you get past that feat. Also watch quakecon most of those are being fixed. You can still be mellee and have success, seen tons use it.

So I don't see your complaints. If your comparing it to wow which has had 10+ years of development time then well I just have to say this game isn't quite there yet.

Yeah.. I def agree with those sentiments... ESO's entire guild system seems like a capitalist, self-centered afterthought where all that matters is being able to buy/sell things and further your individual character. It pales in comparison to other games where guilds have real meaning, you belong to only one, make real friendships, and have a feeling of community. That's the thing I miss most about my old MMO... I mostly only play it with old guildmates text me to log on and play...

I do think the 5 guild thing really missed the mark. Being in a guild means nothing. Half the time you even try to get guildies to do anything they are busy doing something with a different guild. Being in a group of people that play together all the time is the reason I logged on to a lot of MMOs. I stayed in some a good amount of time after I would have left just because of the people I played with. This 5 guild system took away the idea of really being in a guild. I'm sure some people have found tight nit guilds that stick together and I'm happy for them but I have now been in like 7 that all played together, talked on voice chat etc and now I'm the only one who logs in to any of them. I big part of that was that no one could get people together for events. People just join a guild because "why not its one of five and I'll leave if I feel like it'.

I'd honestly like to see ZOS implement guild alliances where you could potentially tie 5 guilds together and receive guild loyalty bonuses. I'm not sure how it would work but I think it would be a great for those expressing the same desire for guild unity that you want. It would still let people join any guilds they want to but give them an incentive to join one guild alliance. Not to be confused with the major alliances of the game, of course.

If you're not having fun in ESO I don't really understand not moving on/back to another game. You mention money as a reason, my time is worth more than 15/month, dropping mid sub wouldn't even be a question for me (and hasn't been in the past).

As I was thinking about the answer to this I realize what I really miss.

I miss the "newness" of it all. I've been playing MMOs since 99. And back in 99 everything was new and trying to figure it all out (in UO back then). Now, 15 years later I don't have the patience to "figure it all out". Sure, I'll figure out quite a bit but if every single thing is a big chore, I'll move onto something else.

    Yeah, I'm jaded.

    Yeah, I'm jaded.

I think everyone compares every new MMO to their "first love" of MMOs. For some that is UO, EQ, DAoC, SWG for a whole lot it is WoW. By now very few people are new to MMOs and most of them just get overwhelmed and don't stay all that long.

A lot of the UO, EQ, DAoC, SWG crowd were able to enjoy the games when very few competitors were able to even produce games on that scale. We dealt with bugs and lacking qualities and loved it because we were able to play something that no one had really ever done before. Try telling someone today that they have to spend three years to hit max level and when they die they get their stuff looted or have to run back to their corpse with no gear to get their gear back and you would see people throw their computers out the window. The thing all the old schoolers have to remember is for every one of us there are 1000 who started with WoW as their first love.

Now there are thousands of MMOs and WoW probably has more subs than all the rest combined. Every MMO that comes out tries to distinguish itself from WoW or else is just a clone of it. All the people who left WoW just seem to want a WoW system that isn't WoW .. but that is the system they got tired of and left .. so you see the issue no one will ever be happy with an MMO again lol.

If you try to do anything different than WoW then you are going away from by far the most successful model in MMO history, if you do anything the same you are a WoW clone and have thousands of people screaming "go back to WoW you WoW kiddies!11!111"

Sadly I too miss Lotro. SoA was the best (give ma a solid group of level 50 raiders hitting the Rift), Moria/Mirk was good. From RoI to present they absolutely have lost grip of the game. The most prefect story line laid out, all they have to do is build a game around it. Balance to Turbine is something in a dictionary - not to be experienced. Towards the end of play it was maybe 7 of us doing raids and 3 - 4 on 6 mans..... So easy.
    -
The community was the best. Never saw a bot, gold seller, etc in over 5 years. I can see where ESO is trying new stuff but is failing not in story but in basic MMO stuff for me. The limitations for console porting, again a lack of PvE balance (speaking of my Templar), the current nerfing down of the game, more to come as I read U3 (tons of extra passives), etc.

Teso will do until a better (for me) MMO pops up. I it is neither great or as awful as some think for me, just not inspiring.

    Meh.

I still go back to most of the games I've invested any real time into, just to see if it's like I remember. It never is. WoW looks cartoonier each time I load it, only the people are the same and still awesome. I still play SWTOR from time to time just because it plays like WoW (that's to say, easy ) but has awesome story. I'd try EQ again but the most fun I had was with a guild that doesn't exist any longer so why bother. I keep a few F2P games updated, ones that I started and enjoyed while they were sub based and sometimes go back just for sh*** and giggles. Rift, Age of Conan, TSW, SWTOR, DDO. Heck, I was even playing Vanguard again until the euthenasia. I do kinda miss CoH, though. That game was kinda mindless fun.

Mostly, I'm just looking for the current time-sink, a place to drop a few hundred hours in trade for some entertainment.

My best friend and I have a running joke that if either one of us hits the lotto and gets comic book supervillain money, we're buying the rights to Vanguard and redoing the whole thing, right this time.

I miss Star Wars the Old Republic. I stopped playing it because it went free to play / pay to win. I'd have to pay a lot more then the old subscription to get the same amount of content I was getting from the subscription.

I sincerely loved that game as well, it's a shame. But this mmo is looking promising I'm hoping they improve it a lot though. It's missing RP features (http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/discussion/comment/1132922/). And it's missing lots of little (some kinda big) things like shared quest progress when grouped up with people and the fact that I am not phased / instanced with people in my guild so I can't see them out and about.

I miss City of Heroes, there's still nothing like it in terms of character customization (well, Champions Online is a pale imitation), and which launched ten years with dynamic mission balancing, and a cross-level grouping system, which were way ahead of the curve, and come to think of it still are.

I miss the sheer scale of pre-LK WoW, with its multiple zones per level range, and its cross-continent quests, really the last game that felt like an attempt to construct a virtual world, before it turned into the pioneer in the field of standing around the hub city queuing to be ported to instances.
