NBs do not. NBs have high Opening burst, High Execure, but nothing in between, so they cant sustain with class skills.
So they have to take weapon skills aswell.
Class skills are Magicka and Spell dmg.
Weapon skills are Stamina and Weapon dmg.
So you see the contradiction there and one of the reasons many NBs go staff.

Are you 100% sure on this? and can you link where you got this info from for me? When I Ambush people while wearing full light armor & magika enchants from stealth it crits for 500-600 But when I do it with med armor & stam enchants I get 1000-1300 crits. So I'm a little confused about the NB class skills that are melee range if maybe they scale on stam & wep crit.

100% sure. Ambush scales with spell power magicka and weapon crit. Same as veiled strike and impale.

Rename the class to Nightstaff and all is fine ;)
Just because it called Night blade does not mean you have to have a blade as a weapon. You a magicka blade called impale which you can use with any weapons. So this nightstaff business is so wrong. :p

Well, to be fair, the classic nightblade had a bunch of talents in magic trees, true, but one if it's major specialties was indeed one handed blades (shortblade), while destruction magic was considered only a minor specialty to a nightblade, but it also had a marksman minor specialty so the two were interchangeable. At least this was the case in Morrowind, things changed a bit in Oblivion with illusion magic taking a step back for destro/resto to come in, while the marksman nightblade became rare.

In fact, the major magic schools that nightblade specialized in really had nothing to do with offensive damaging magic in Morrowind. Alteration and illusion were the major spell schools. These schools focused on altering the body and opponents to benefit the casters physical abilities. This was changed to a dynamic, in Oblivion, centered around restoration and alteration to fill that buffing role, with blades and/or destruction magic as offensive options.

You don't have to use one or the other in the present game according to ESOs motto, but the common argument that people bring up with the mocking term nightstaff (that nightblades should do best or well with a blade), I feel, has some grounding. Right now, nightblade is only usable at its best with a staff, and not even close with a blade(s). I think whatever business that is, is 'so wrong'. That's my two cents anyway. ^.^

I we just compare staff's light and heavy attack with bow (since DW, 2h is not even near the dps what staff does in standard attacks... thx lolZeni...) Just with light armor+destrostaff light attack: 450 heavy attack: ~750. Medium armor+bow light attack: 350 heavy attack: ~650
    Staff still hits harder... LolZeni?

LA has Spell penetration passive. Probably that is the reason why destro staff deals more damage.

    example:
    ambush -
crit chance - from weapon crit
damage inc - from magicka, spelldamage and (not tested, but I think so) weapon damage

those 1k+ crits is crits from stealth, backhits by target with low armour attribute (not spell resist)

350% hidden stealth. what is like a bit more than 150% in pvp. that means you hit from back and from hidden a player like a sorc with 1 fragment :D

Most of this thread seems to be about PVP performance, and discussion of isolated skills.

What about raw sustained dps in PVE? How is stamina NB measuring up to caster nightstaff?

I'm curious, since I play as Nightstaff in both PVE and PVP at the moment, and would appreciate the comments from those in the PTS.
