As best as I can tell from PTS, no, it looks as if they are 100% achievements. But keep in mind even little stuff like gathering gives you an achievement. Also these are account wide, so once you've earned said achievement on one player, the entire account can now use that color. If I had to guess without looking through the hundreds of achievements, I'd say by the time you defeat Molag Bal on your first toon you'll probably have at least half of the Dyes available to that account.

Brown, Black, Gray, Amber, Rust, and basically any natural earth tone should be easy to get. That way if you want to be pink or purple you have to earn the right abuse to my eye balls.

Nice. Thanks for not making a thread based solely on phobia of colors. Hopefully hot pink is the hardest color to get, just to make people rage.

These screenshots are from PTS, so they are brand new characters (VR12 templates) and probably haven't done anything to get an achievement yet. They are just testing stuff and probably went straight to the dyes. Look at the list of achievements on the previous page, they are easy to get just playing the game.

I think I read that the Uncommon dyes are also shinier (trying to locate the comment now). I'm guessing, but maybe Rare is slightly iridescent, like the higher VR stuff. Can't have the noobs looking too much like the elitists! LOL

Also of note from the 1.3 notes:
    Armor Colors and Tints Adjusted
To prepare for our dye system, we've re-evaluated the color palette we use for armor and have made some adjustments to how colors display on gear throughout the game. This gives us more flexibility to add new armor sets and crafting materials, provides some more saturated colors, and will make upgrades consistently look more significant. The upgrade may alter the original colors on armor you already own, but you'll be able to choose your own color schemes with the dye system should you dislike the changes.

So undyed armor will probably look quite different than your armor looks today.

Hopefully this will eleviate the problems we had with high end gear looking worse than low level gear. (In standard format)

Personally, I'd like to see a preview option before you unlock the colors. They do look slightly different on the armor before you apply the dye, and if I have to work hard to obtain the dye, I'd want to make sure I'm going to enjoy it before I do the hard work to earn the achievement.

I dont mind the achievement based system, but I'd also be open to other colors unlocking through some other means, too.

I like the idea of a preview function, but I don't think I'd base my game play / achieve chasing on what colour I'd like to have next.

Thx for the great breakdown @Phantax.

The preview is great (should have previews for everything crafting related).
Don't like the colors tied to achievements either.

If you could get the same color in PvE, PvP, or Craglorn I wouldn't mind so much. Players shouldn't be penalized for their play style, no matter what it is.

I totally agree with that statement and I hope ZOS takes another look at how the dyes are unlocked.

Good, because that is exactly the way it is. You will get black, red, whatever from doing anything that's part of the game. PvE, Quests, PvP, Crafting, Fishing.. whatever.

What you will not get is the shade "Ruby Throne Red" in PvE just as someone who spends all their time in PvP won't get "Daedric Red". This should be perfect, we will all get our colours for participating in gameplay and those who complete great achievements will have the *shade* of that colour to prove it.

It is an MMO after all, everyone is not supposed to have everything.

Edit: In my opinion this was the best way this could have ever been implemented. Bound on dye + achievement based = doing the content is rewarding. Keep adding stuff like this and I think it'll go a long way in making people feel like the gameplay is fun and rewarding.

That is a different topic and while I agree with you, it doesn't really matter what the achievement is - but the point is that if you see someone who has these colours you'll know that they are a dedicated PvP:er, great in Trials or a master crafter and that's what's cool about it

Unfortunately acquiring dyes is as I hoped it wouldn't be. It's entirely achievement based.

Meh, that totally kills it for me. Guess I am running around with default colours :-(

I actually like that idea, makes it a incentive to complete things, since we get rewarded, think some colors is easy to get and some aint. So all will be able to get some to chose from.

sucks that there locked behind achievements , specially since most people dont like PVP, and were forced to pvp to unlock them, dyes should be handled by loot , rare drops imo

Sigh. If they HAD to make it achievement based I wish they had not tied it to PvP. I also wish dyes were actual and not unlocks. How awesome would it be as a crafter to be able to sell armor that was dyed to suit the client? I think they missed an opportunity here and are making a simple vanity item into a MUCH bigger deal than it should be.

Even if they didn't make this tied to crafting in some way I think it could have added something vibrant and valuable to the economy if you could dye gear and then sell it, knowing the dyes will remain attached. I also wish they had not tied any of it to PvP.

I wouldn't say that 'most' people don't like PvP, but I do agree that putting dyes behind achievements was a bad idea.
Sure put some as achieve rewards, the rest should as you say be as loot drops, finds etc.
And as for Zeni not wanting dyes to be a tradable item, well that was easy to do... simply make them BoP and problem solved !

I think the achievement part is GREAT. Given there are so few titles in the game in comparison to achievements, at least they are being used for something. You'd rather that hot mess that GW2 created??? Spending 20k gold AND UP to get a really nice dye (Abyss, Celestial, etc..)... no thanks. Or yes you can randomly find them.. and they conveniently put them in their cash shop in random packs with people probably spending a fortune with no guarantee to get anything they need. Now that is a pay model I do not like. These can be earned with clear objectives, that's great!

What change I would suggest to ZOS would be, allow a preview of all dyes available in the game --- so that people can decide if those are achievements they want to go out of their way to obtain or not.

Why shouldn't dyes be tied to achievements? I want people to know that I am able to flaunt my colors because I accomplished something, not just because I got good at farming containers.

I like the idea of dyes being tied to achievements. To be honest, I really don't understand all the whining there seems to be around it. From what I've read, they're not exactly gonna lock your precious colours for good - they seem to have tried to get different shades of same colour available to everyone, be it crafter, PVP-er, casual PvE-er or hardcore Trials runner. If you think you'll die without that one uberrare pink - well, maybe you should indeed go out of your way to get it;) But people's objection seems "I'm not gonna do <x> just to unlock <y>, not worth it"...well, then don't? No one's forcing you to anything, they're only giving us more options. If we want to, we can now go get that colour. If we feel it's not worth it - well, no harm done, we'll just use a different shade.

And yes, I'm a completionist so I myself have plenty of achievements. I don't PvP and I still have Craglorn to do though, I see no problem with that. If it turns out I absolutely can't live without one of the shades tied to those, I'm sure I'll think of something;)
