Armor Dyes Review - The Good & The Bad

Dye unlocks are account-wide. Which means that if you have only one toon that you PvP with and another that you grind Craglorn with your RP-only toon will have access to all the dyes.

Don't really care that some of the rarer colors are only available through end-game or PvP achievements. They guy who spent a solid week in Cyrodiil without sleep to be crowned Emperor -should- be sporting a color that no one else has. It's a mark of achievement ( and a badge of dishonor in my book, but hey, to each their own ).
Brunhilda Icehammer - Nord Dragonknight, 'Smith & Enchantress 'What is 'ranged? I need to hit something!!'
Laehl Direthorn - Bosmer Nightblade, Purveyor of fine Clothes, Bows and Staves
Reeza gra-Zuni - Orc Templar 'War Shaman' and Apothecary
Noemi Snowpaw - Kajiit Dragon Knight - I laugh... or I'd have to kill you.
Kitera Dreamon - Breton of The Dominion: Because those Daggers don't appreciate a great Mage.
Lysara Shadowcroft - Dunmer Bloodmage: This will only hurt a lot.

The more I think about it being achievement based the more I like the idea. Now achievements at least give you something.

But I'm not sure if like that they are account-wide. I like my different characters to earn their stuff without help from my other characters.

Sigh. If they HAD to make it achievement based I wish they had not tied it to PvP. I also wish dyes were actual and not unlocks. How awesome would it be as a crafter to be able to sell armor that was dyed to suit the client? I think they missed an opportunity here and are making a simple vanity item into a MUCH bigger deal than it should be.

I actually don't think people will really miss out on colors. There's several similar shades and there are various achievements, there's PvP achievments that give dyes, there's PvE achievements that give dyes. A PvEer will likely be able to find a red (for example) dye with an achievement that is relatively easy accessible to them and so will a PvPer. There's also dyes tied to crafting, killing certain monsters in great numbers, quests, exploring... even fishing.

The only way you would truly have no color selections... is if you don't play the game at all.

I knew the emperor achieve would have a dye attached to it, Though I never put 2 and 2 together (I'm assuming that shade of red matches the red diamond on imperial gear). Sucks, I wanted to use that :(

Does it cost gold to actually do the dyeing? If it does, I'm going to be so broke. I'll be changing my colors every day.

Unfortunately acquiring dyes is as I hoped it wouldn't be. It's entirely achievement based. That is they are unlocked by accomplishing certain achieves, not purchasable with achievement points.
This is going to heavily restrict which dyes are available to a lot of players because a lot of the dyes (especially the rarer ones) seem to be PvP or Craglorn based achievements ! So if you're not into PvP or not obsessed with Craglorn you won't be opening these dyes in your dyes window.

The other point is you never physically own a dye. (as far as I can tell) you get the achievement and the dye is unlocked. This means there will be no trading in dyes !
In itself this is double edged blessing. OK we aren't going to get the usual idiots spamming chat trying to sell white or black dyes (usually the most popular)for a small fortune, but neither are we going to have the ability to get those dyes we long to have but don't have the achieves for.

You do realize that by the time you've completed Cadwell's Almanac you will have access to probably 70% of the dyes in the game, and that's without even trying to get them. Some of the harder achievements, either time or actual difficulty, will require players to go out of their way to complete, and frankly they SHOULD have access to something the general populous doesn't.

I agree that as it appears on PTS right now we won't even be able to dye up some armor and sell that armor to another player, which I think is kind of silly but who knows, it's just PTS at this time and could change.

I'll be fine with them getting rid of the achievement part of the dye system if they give me the option to turn off player dyes.

I am all for people being able to run around like power rangers and powder puff girls as long as I don't have to see it.

Personally I like the achievement system in it, it makes me want to get out there and do things I normally wouldn't do.

also only a couple of dyes are actually hard to get. One or two of the pvp ones and the time trial, looks like about 90% of it can be obtained solo without much time investment.

I don't see the point in getting upset really... I'll never see emperor but I certainly think the ones that earned it legitimately should have something fancy like that.

I really, really like that system!
Including things like rubin red locked to (former) emperors - it means I will likely never, ever have that dye. But it also means that those players who did get it have something to really show off with - which is a good thing!

    Rare dyes from PvP ?

    Makes sense. :|

Oh wait, my bad.. That doesn't make any sense at all, not even a little bit. In fact, that's one of the worst ideas I've seen in MMO's since 1996.

WTG Zenimax. You managed to take a good idea and bake it into a brick of crap, yet again.

Until you're going to make a PvE-only phase of Cyrodil, you can't base achievements on anything in there. It's OPTIONAL content, right now. Why? Because 100 jerknuggets can prevent you from getting it, if they're so inclined. And yes, they're inclined!

its still optional. you don't have to dye your armor that particular shade of red it will have absolutely no change on your power and honestly its not a lot different than some of the other reds. In fact some of them are so close unless you really squint your eyes you really can't tell

i think its important to note that emperor is something i am 99.99999% sure I will NEVER see and I think it is perfectly fair that they get a cool color just for them to show off a little bit.

Same for time trials and same for crafters. I like that people get little badges for the accomplishments they have made.

Lol anyone would think dyes were only available from PvP achievements if you read some of the replies in this thread.

The game offers both PvE and PvP, it is only right that both types of play are rewarded.

I can't wait to start dying. Can we dye items we craft and then sell them on? Or will the dye be lost if the buyer doesnt have the appropriate unlock? Maybe only bound items can be dyed? Can't wait to find out either way.

Good review, and if most of the dyes are based off of PVP and Craglorn achievments, they can keep them as far as I'm concerned. Just not sure why they feel they need to 'restrict' so many things. Whatever.

IF we have access to dark-ish red from some NORMAL achievement and not a TOP one.. shades of gray are there too I hope..

But from seeing the state of this game, I really think all good colors will be locked and we'll be left with shades of turquoise and green..

The people mad about this should really go look at the test server forum before getting too wound up. There are only a few PvP (4) and Trial (6) achievements. The vast majority are achievements that the average player will already have or will get easily just by playing the main story. Most are for exploring the different zones and completing the quests in those zones. The are also tying a lot of the colors to achievement that are not currently in the game. Just becoming a vampire, for example, is an achievement that will be added and will award you a black dye.

EDIT: I'm going to go ahead and post this here.

So that's another easy to achieve black! That one is listed as rare as well.

I think it is awesome that it is achievement based and that you can see what achievement is needed for what color you want....I also disagree about selling dyes....it only boost clothing and blacksmithing abilities to sell. So zone chat will look like "WTS black (or color)ancient elf medium armor" "WTS red daedric heavy armor 10k per piece" or "crafting imperial armor many colors to choose"
I am pretty sure colors will stay on armor...If not this will become a forgotten effort.

#1 - Yes, all achievements for Dyes will be grandfathered in, even the ones they are adding in 1.3.

#2 - Pretty much everyone will end up having access to about 90%+ of the dyes by the time one of their account characters reaches VR12 (or w/e the upcoming change to the vet system entails). And that's just doing normal things like questing, exploring, etc.

Yes but are there any colors available at the beginning? Even a small, very very limited palette? For example, GW2 you had a small one then had to find/buy/earn the rest.
