TBH I'd compare it to furnishings in Crown Crates. Even that is more dependable.

I buy only very specific sets of crates, only with gold, and foremost to get good gem return via repeats. So I get packs I've bought before, where I like the bulk of the low-tier items, and get a lot of gems back. Spending 5-10 mil on crate packs pretty much guarantees enough gem return to get some items. (At least at <= 100-gem tier. The Apex tier is absurd; even if when I can "afford" furnishings in it, I typically choose not to. (I was really tempted to get 1 more of these: https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Constellation_Projection_Apparatus - but nah, it's too much. Waste of a really great asset.)

With crates, at no point do I actually hope to "win" anything I actually want via natural roll. It's just a numbers game to get enough gems. One could say the same about "Treasure" Maps, but IMO they're worse:

1. There's not really any way to circumvent their RNG (e.g. Endeavors, repeat pulls, etc.)
2. Maps are also a waste of time! I hate crates but at least they're instant. With maps we have to play the inventory-management game since they don't stack, then run around like a numpty only to go "oh look, garbage worth < 500 gold again" for the 50th time in a row.

The gold from doing daily crafting writs is not where most of the profit comes from. The real profit is the gold mats that are received from turning the writs in, and from doing the surveys then refining. Selling those gold mats brings in a LOT more gold than just what is received from turning in the writ quests.

My new lukewarm take is stop putting furnishing antiquity leads in treasure maps. You might as well not waste development time on those furnishings in the first place, because no player is getting more than one. I love decorating, and I don't bother with maps at all anymore. I just post them at ridiculous prices for the rubes who think they might be the exception to the rule. (Sorry, Moon, I think very highly of you and appreciate the gold you've sunk into figuring out the system is rigged.)

Is that the takeaway devs want players to have? Treasure maps are a scam for players who don't know better, not a reward? Because that's the logical outcome of the current status quo.

Well, I hope you're now experiencing the full impact of being in a group with a 0 level in PvP dudes. It's time for you to understand that the only thing ZOS can make work is their ban machine.
