It really just takes practice. Start by going into cyro and learning how to not die.
Seriously, learn how to not die there then try bgs.
Build real tanky with a lot of sustain.
Be mobile.
Learn how to react quickly to things such as fossilize, or whatever it's called now.
Learn how to kite.
Learn line of site.
Watch your opponent and their animations.
Learn the sounds certain effects, sets and skills make.
Learn to walk through your enemy. They have to turn their camera around to attack you most of the time.
Get two Heals Over Time slotted... HOTs
Get a good burst heal.
Keep your buffs up.
Have a strong defensive back bar.
Once you learn how to not die then and only then do you stsrt to peel away your defenses and add in more stuff that can kill enemies.
It really is a l2p thing and it reay does take time.
Oh, and hop around a lot. Or don't. This doesn't matter really... maybe a little.
Oh, I almost forgot the single most important thing in the entire game. For the love of God learn how to block.
Seriously, go into a bg with the goal of simply blocking damage. Walk around and wait for enemies to attack you so you can block and learn how that feels. Block ROA. Block ROA.
Did I mention you should block ROA.
Do absolutely nothing in a few BGs but heal, buff and block.
So so soooo many players have no idea how to block.
