I’ve often wondered that myself. For a while I assumed all Game Journalists are paid off, but there’s no possible way that could be true.

Like how is it that they will cover bad launches and game closures but when a game deteriorates to an unplayable state, nobody mentions it?

So... it is tough to tell but I will say this.

I used to work in media for 8 years before transitioning to a new career path to where I am now as a Senior Software Engineer.

I'm not going to make claims for anyone or say this is how every single case is - my general observations were the following.

The people who write these pieces tend to be younger or new in the scene. There is an urgency to get your foot in the door and getting to write a story about ZoS and ESO being 10 years old is an awesome story to write. There are so many paths you can go down and history with the stories they have put out... its bad ass content to write about.

IF the person who was given access to talk about ESO writes a story that is negative and trashes the game there might be some internal pressure from the company who the writer works for (not always the case but I've seen pushback from leads in the sense of "We have a great thing going with this company how could you write something like that". Also if the person does write something bad the odds of them getting another chance to work/write about other studios goes down hill.

If you have a "thats the person who wrote that hit piece about ESO" on your resume do you think other studios are going to line up and give you a shot?

I'm in no way saying there was deliberate manipulation or anything at play... just how things tend to come out in the wash as you establish connections in the industry.

Now, people who make youtube videos or their livelihood come from their own success - thats a different story. That is why you see SOOOOOOOO many negative things about ESO on other platforms where the content creator is their own boss.
