Bethesda does have a thing or 2 to say about lore directions and how things are run. Zenimax Online was created specifically for ESO (when it was first created), and Zenimax Media inc. - the umbrella company - was created in May 1999 by Christopher Weaver and Robert A. Altman.
So I'm not entirely sure that it would be "cheaper for Zenimax Online, as they most likely will have a turn-around clause to continue developing ESO, and as such act as a "license" to continue developing this game. They're also using a licensed engine (HeroEngine) as well as an assortment of other licensed software programs. So I don't think they're having it that much cheaper than other MMO companies, per example Blizzard is having it a lot cheaper, using both a proprietary engine as well as 100% ownership of their lore (thanks to legal agreements, Activision and Blizzard is considered separate entities so neither have any rights nor anything to say in what the other is doing in terms of development).

No it hasn't, but the game was announced 4 or so years ago.danielpatrickkeaneub17_ESO wrote: »ESO will never survive bad reviews.

ESO will never survive after Fallout 4.
ESO will never survive without a subscription.
ESO will never be popular.
ESO will never live past the current sky is falling scenario that pops up every 2 months.
Every one of these things has been brought up for about the last 4 years. Yes, people were even calling the game dead before it launched.
Here is the reality ... as long as they continue to turn a profit the game will survive. Maybe it's 5 years, maybe 10. Who knows. There is so much doomsaying around these parts it's silly. Deal with info that you know. We KNOW that it will still be putting out DLCs for 2016, and we are pretty well assured 2017 as well. Even if that's the end of them that would still bring us to a 5 year life cycle which is amazing for any game. Comparing it to WOWs longevity as the bench mark is foolish. That's like calling a baseball player lazy for not being Cal Ripken. That said, the only thing that may kill it off, other than money, would be a transition to the PS5 or XBox1000. Even then chances are high that backwards compatibility won't be an issue.
Long story short ... one day the servers will close. That day is a hell of a long way off from now. Enjoy the ride.

Zenimax even evolved out of Bethesda - and then Zenimax as the top level organisation acquired Bethesda.

Not that im saying eso wont make 10 years, im just saying basing it off the largest game of this type might not be the way to go.
WoW subs peaked around 12 Million during WoTLK and went in slow decline ever since. The last numbers released by Blizzard showed subscriptions below 6 Million. They've since said they are no longer going to release subscription numbers because they believe it no longer gives an accurate representation of how many play.
Haha, I heard the same "excuse" from Linden Labs, when the number of players per 30 days dropped below a million. It was about the same relation - more than 50% less than at their best times.
I remember that drop.I still have my Second Life account and was there the other day.It seems to be still holding on,though it's population doesnt seem to be online much lately.I first heard about on TV in a show called Forbes. It said it was thee number one money maker of that year, and that was in 2008.

Games nowadays don't last that long.
The only reason some other games have is because they launched at a era where there was no competition and the concept was new, thus accumulated millions of players that allowed them to sustain the game for as long as it did, whereas more recent games tried and failed miserably, unless they come up with something truly unique and addictive, they don't really last for more than 4-5 years, or just continue in self-sustain mode with some very rare and little additions and a skeleton crew.
No new gamer really looks for games that launched 10+ years ago, it is mostly players that have old systems/returning players or for the nostalgic value.
I doubt ESO will last nearly half that time tbh, but that's just my view.

It seems to me you have no idea how this works, do you? Zenimax owns 2 companies. ZOS and Beth have their own CEO, their own higher management and they have separate financial reports. All the higher up people in those 2 companies must and want to show the best financial reports to still have their jobs and their hefty benefits.

Ever since Zenimax Online Studios was founded by Zenimax Media LLC, people started the speculations; is it an Elder Scrolls MMO? Is it a Fallout MMO? People speculated about all sorts of possibilities.
One thing they all had in common? Most all of the haters and trolls said that if it was an Elder Scrolls MMO, it was doomed to fail. Once ESO was officially announced, people started speculating that the game would be dead in a year, or that they'd never finish it.
So @danielpatrickkeaneub17_ESO was correct. People have been singing the death knell for ESO for four years or better, and definitely since it was announced.

Yeah, start of 2008 the daily amount of dollars spend by players was around 2.3 million US$ - daily - it was crowded as hell. But second life is still going well - Linden Lab is working on a new game like second life - it will not be SL 2.0, but a new game. So the idea behind second life is far from being dead - and SL has a quite loyal player base which plays for years.
Edit: Linden Lab shot themselves into their own knee though, when they removed any way to pay for SL anonymously. All the Linden dollar exchanges were banned midth of last year - they lost all those, who do not want to pay in a trackable way.
