WoWs population is/was how big?
Not that im saying eso wont make 10 years, im just saying basing it off the largest game of this type might not be the way to go.
WoW subs peaked around 12 Million during WoTLK and went in slow decline ever since. The last numbers released by Blizzard showed subscriptions below 6 Million. They've since said they are no longer going to release subscription numbers because they believe it no longer gives an accurate representation of how many play.
Haha, I heard the same "excuse" from Linden Labs, when the number of players per 30 days dropped below a million. It was about the same relation - more than 50% less than at their best times.
I remember that drop.I still have my Second Life account and was there the other day.It seems to be still holding on,though it's population doesnt seem to be online much lately.I first heard about on TV in a show called Forbes. It said it was thee number one money maker of that year, and that was in 2008.
Yeah, start of 2008 the daily amount of dollars spend by players was around 2.3 million US$ - daily - it was crowded as hell. But second life is still going well - Linden Lab is working on a new game like second life - it will not be SL 2.0, but a new game. So the idea behind second life is far from being dead - and SL has a quite loyal player base which plays for years.
Edit: Linden Lab shot themselves into their own knee though, when they removed any way to pay for SL anonymously. All the Linden dollar exchanges were banned midth of last year - they lost all those, who do not want to pay in a trackable way.
You dont pay for SL,Its free. What y ou DO pay for is the Lindens.
As to the new game,do you mean the Open Grid? It's going along.Just not controlled by anyone in Second Life, other than members such as myself. I go there to check on things sometimes.
No, not the opensim world - Linden Lab is working on a new kind of second life, but they do not call it second life to not have to make it a second life 2.0. It will be similar, but they will neither move accounts nor assets from SL to the new one.
Edit: it is as well not meant to be a successor of SL - SL will run as long as it is profitable in parallel to the new one, but it is years out for it to be released. I read that in its current state they offer a limited number of creators from SL access to the game in 2016, more in 2017, in order to create content, but it will not be open for the public anytime soon.

Well. as far as I remember the working title is "project Sansar" for the new one - look up youtube on this and as well the "meet the lindens" interview with Ebbe Linden.
