There are all sorts of people in all walks of life. Not every person in the real world will be the "ideal person". Not everyone has the same personality and outlook on life.

Tanlorin (and other Companion characters) are designed to be as diverse from one another as possible. Some Companions have already "grown a backbone". Some of them can be relatable to some player out there.

It's okay that we have characters that we hate. I personally can't stand Ember, yet others love her. I imagine some people out there adore Tanlorin, while others hate them. It's okay because we have variety from the Companions system, and each character can be relatable to someone in the real world on some walk of life.

There's no need to lecture me about the obvious just because I don't like Tanlorin based on the dialogue you posted. The fact that the dialogue made me cringe doesn't mean I don't know that there are all sorts of people in life, etc. You need to practice what you preach and not assume that everyone who disagrees with you (i.e. has a different outlook from you) needs a lecture on what's obvious to everyone over the age of 12.

So far I really like Zerith - it's interesting character and history, I like personality and VA.

And Tanlorin? Geez, I thought that Bastian was annoying but here we have completely new level. Seriously, why this character behave and talks like constantly overhyped, annoying kid? This is not being joyfull and happy person, this is just infantile. We have already Ember with this vibe, but she was ok-ish with it - Tanlorin is just worse version of this.

Zerith-var is great so far, easily probably going to be my favorite companion. I haven't messed with Tanlorin at all yet since when I previewed them their voice made my ears not happy. Can't say there's much I like about that characters design at all from the looks of it and from what people have said about them they sound pretty annoying too.

The "lecture" was not aimed at you specifically, though I did quote your wording. It was to explain that there are just going to be characters (and real-life people) we cannot personally tolerate.

Please don't take my response personally. I wanted to elaborate my thoughts on the matter using your words as an example.

With everything that people have said, I am beginning to understand my dislike of the Altmer more.

I have never really found Ember all that bad. I sort of like her.

But, the whole 'I have to be happy! I AM HAPPY!' that Tanlorin gives off (including a 'I am not usually this serious, when they weren't all that serious to begin with' plus the whole 'Jakarn and Darien rolled into an Altmer body' bit just serious ly puts me off.

I have yet to do the quest, but I am sort of dreading it, as well as leveling and rapport gaining. I need to go see what gives huge rapport boosts so I can try to do it every day to get the quests out of the way quickly. (Azandar was easy due to the enchanting writs)

Edit: Looks like both dark anchors and alchemy writs give daily large boosts, so hopefully I can get those done and get at least the rapport and quests out of the way. Leveling to 20 will be a bit more difficult.

Coming back to say no to both.

My current main is a SoulCro who obsessively hunts books. I am a clumsy player to the point where it's a meme that every Sunday our guild runs a trial and while waiting, I'm always being attacked by guards for summoning a ghost.

I know a weeks worth of negative rapport could be fixed by a daily quest on each, but man, seeing negative all the time would drive me batty.

Max level, max rapport, get perks, consign to the forgotten realm of unused collectables and go back to Mirri.

If you're not aiming your response at someone, it's best not to quote them unless you make it clear that you're not aiming your response. But not to worry. I've made that mistake too, and I appreciate your clarification.

I'm sure lots of us (asexual or not) feel uncomfortable or irritated when a game character keeps flirting with our character. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to tell NPCs and companions to stop, which is kind of funny for a game that tries to be politically correct.

Sorry, this line was spurred because of those comments in here claiming we dislike Tanlorin just cause of their gender identity and would find 'any excuse' and that kinda pissed me off because they themselves can be hurtful/cause discomfort for people who do not respond well to this kind of behavior. I get frustrated when people forget how stressful this kind of stuff can be for some people.

Yeah. I QUITE agree. Goddess spare me from Jakarn, or any of the more flirtatious NPCs (including the old lady whose name I now don't remember). Another good reason for me not using companions....

In fairness, only Tanlorin has ever flirted with me. Every other one I tried (i haven't done much with Ember, Sharp or the Redguard guy yet though) have not even hinted at such.

Yeah, I don't think any so far gave flirty vibes unless you choose to go full RP delulu mode and interpret it that way (which to be clear, is perfectly fine to do if you want). Zerith-var has been quite a romantic even, but I wouldn't even say it's in a flirty/coming onto your character way.... just seems to value having a connection. So far I'm just taking it as him having the deepest of platonic feelings for my Khajiit sorcerer, haha.
Can't say for Tanlorin though and I have no idea when I plan to start doing their quests to find out.

Why? I have six fully leveled companions already that I don't use. Why would I pay real money to get more? Plus, since they have to be purchased with real money they should come fully leveled and require zero rapport leveling. They're bought and paid for when you buy them.

I feel the same way. I've been dying for an altmer companion since Blackwood. I didn't really have any preferences for them besides being mature and more on the stoic side.

I'm so disappointed with Tanlorin's personality, like, I really have no words. I was prepared to have to headcanon some things like making them magey, but they're so extremely far from what I wanted that I actually don't think I can do it. I'm so sad about it.

So because of family, this person has forever rejected books, including fiction, poetry, and practical books that could make their life better? Sounds like an idiot to me. And grow a backbone, dear. You're an adult now.
(Hopefully not all their dialogue is that cringeworthy.)

Sounds like a person who prefers to forever remain a victim instead of moving forward. Of course there are such people also in real life, but I'd think ZOS would try to make companions likeable somehow - and I'm not sure if many people like that? A really strange design decision, from my point of view.
    coop500 wrote: »
for me it was the flirting. I abandoned the quest once my character randomly got called 'attractive' and there was no option to tell them to knock it off. Felt like I was being creeped on by some horny internet person and my fight or flight instincts started kicking in.

Yes, it's totally creepy. I understand some players seem to like flirty npcs, but ZOS should at least give people who dislike that some dialogue options to voice our character's opinion on it and make it stop. This would be the least, really. It's sad ZOS doesn't seem to care, although this topic has been brought up at least since Jakarn's obnoxious behaviour in High Isle.

So I finally unlocked Zerith-Var. He seems like a cool guy and I'll run with him when I'm puttering around doing easy stuff. He leveled up four times just by doing one circuit of a public dungeon. Once he's leveled and I have his perk from leveling rapport, I doubt I'll use him much because I already have a tank companion, healer companion, and support companion (I don't need DPS since that's me). Though if I find that I like his comments and personality a lot (too early to tell), I might end up using him more.

Still haven't picked up Tanlorin because I want to level Zerith-Var more first.

I believe this beggar can always be found under the bridge in Devon's Watch, so you could check that location out.

Edit: Back when this thread was made I voted for "I will use both". I've only unlocked Zerith-var thus far and it might be my favourite companion. I'll still unlock Tanlorin sometime, but from what I've read about their personality, I don't think I'll use them much.

There are several necromaner skills that are not an criminal act, and really, having a necromancer companion that would give you a bounty or make guards angry would be an awful decision.
