There's a post from Kevin (back a few pages maybe) where he states you will keep them should your ESO + sub lapse at any point. I seriously doubt they will be available with an ESO + free trial though - they've been explicitly excluded from the free trial during Blackwood etc.

thanks, not sure where it was mentioned that much, i missed the stream and wasn't sure if these were being treated as the same as dungeon dlc, or if it was a free redeem.

The more I think about it the more I am leaning towards passing on both. Even though I am somewhat interested in seeing how a Necromancer Companion would work I just don't feel like going through the whole unlocking and leveling thing again. Getting the houseguest is tempting but I just don't want it bad enough to do it.

I recently made a thread asking when is it enough with getting new Companions, and I personally have reached that point. If we ever get a Verandis type I'll be all over it, but until then I'm satisfied with Azandar and Sharp.

(I wish we could edit our poll votes.)

I would love a do it yourself companion system going forward. It would certainly be cheaper for ZOS to implement because they could skip the voice actors and background quests.

On second thought, I would miss the uniqueness and stories of the ones they create.

I would also love it if we could summon up to three companions in four-man dungeons, and if they could help us get past 2+ person mechanics.

    • Parse Food for PvE:(DPS) Ghastly Eye Bowl (increases Max Magicka by 4592 and Magicka Recovery by 459 for 2 hours).
    • Gold/Purple Food for Sorc PvP and Meme Tanking:(PvP) Clockwork Citrus Filet (increases Max Health by 3326, Health Recovery by 406 [useful if stage 1 vampire], Max Magicka by 3080, and Magicka Recovery by 338 for 2 hours). Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

Yes! I can understand if summoning more than one is disabled for overland, as it would get really crowded, but in dungeons I see no problem.

    1. Whenever I'm adventuring through Tamriel without Bastian, I miss him. So even the other companions that I like don't travel with me for very long times.
    2. If I like a companion or not depends completely on their story and personality, not their class or abilities. (Although the Arcanist skills are so flashy and ugly that I'd have a hard time tolerating them for longer times, despite Azandar being quite allright.)
    3. I don't have unlimited playing time. That's why so far I only maxed out Basti (because he's the companion that was practically written for me and my main character), Ember (As companion for my roguish Khajiit. She's very likeable in her quests, sometimes a bit weird in her comments, though.) and Azandar (The only one where I did it mostly for the perk. His character is okay, his story a bit boring, like everything Apocrypha-related. Would have stopped at max rapport and finished story, but did the endless level-up to max for the portfolios before I put him away.)
I'll probably get around to maxing out Sharps rapport and play through his story, because I think I'll like him, but that's it. (His perk is also great, but I already have my Master Angler, and if I want to fish with him I can invite him to it anytime.)

That said - I'm looking forward a lot to meeting Zerith-var. A Khajiit warrior from a priestly order that took up Necromancy to redeem lost souls. (Maybe even something about saving Dro-m'Athra?) A hero out of time, seeking his way, and wanting to help me find mine. Accompanied by a ghost cat that speaks to him and (hopefully) myself. And he even looks cool and has a great perk!
I never ever expected that they would come up with an idea for a Necromancer that I'd find even tolerable. This one is intriguing! And since ESO made me love the Khajiit and their culture I can't wait to play through his story!
Very high hopes for this one! Although Bastian will probably still be my favourite.

With Tanlorin I'm sceptical. "A scrappy thief with a brash personality", combined with flashy purple hair and purple eyes... I love dashing, swashbuckly characters with witty quips and a "golden heart". But those are not that easy to write without crossing the line and making them just annoying wannabes that think themselves oh-so-cool. A character with optics as flashy as Tanlorin's, introduced with wording like that, usually comes out at the wrong side of that line for my tastes. And if they are from the trope of "self-reliant badass that's too cool to rely on anyone" I'll yawn and be on my way. (They made that work for Sharp, but in a much more subtle way than a character with a picture like that Altmer could ever be.) But I'll wait and see. They'll have their chance, but I doubt they will really capture my attention. I might max them out, anyway, for the perk that is quite useful, but that might be it. (Oh, and for the records, their preferred gender doesn't matter to me, as long as it isn't all the character is defined about.)

Since I have ESO+ active just because of the crafting bag it is actually a perk for me that the new companions come for free via that. Sadly, it also shows how much ESO has lost in terms of unique content during the last years. Where companions once were part of a chapter now we have tiny chapters, no story DLC, and the companions and their stories are "sold" separately, taking up what once was a whole DLC story zone.

I like the companion passives especially the heavy sack one. Mostly solo player for lore exploration so companions are useful when you are just exploring the overland and you need them to tank a boss while you can focus on dps. I move very slowly through the content so I don't really want to disturb others if I'm just doing the easier content in the game. I also enjoy the little questlines they have too. Granted I only really have completed Sharp's questline so far but I enjoyed it. :)

This is honestly one of my favorite tropes in media as well. I thought it was really done well in the Thieves Guild and with Zaji, so I'm willing to give ZOS the benefit of the doubt that I'll also enjoy Tanlorin.

However, the way Jakarn was written in High Isle was definitely a big step down from how he was introduced. And I'm a bit worried that with Tanlorin they'll jump the shark on this type of character. I honestly blame Marvel for kinda ruining this type of character. It seems like ever since the quippy Marvel dialogue did so well, other companies want to copy it. But they're doing a worse and worse job of it. Marvel characters are meant to be a bit cartoonish but it can a bit jarring in stuff that's a bit more grounded like ESO. And these sorts of sassy characters are especially likely to fall prey to that, I think.

Companion is just role playing toy. I know that.
And we can't use them for the Vet dungeon effectively ,
because of maintaining game balance. OK, I accept it.

    But....

Companion always keep consuming my healer character's magika
just like their energy drink. And without it, they can't survive just
30sec on the overland field. Companion try to kill my healer character
    just like magika vampire.

    They need buff.

Ember is useful as DD if she is doing with my tank. But with my DD character,
then companion is really useless. Isobel is 100% fake tank, compared with
    my real tank.

I actually have had no use for Jakarn EVER. I really do not want sleazeball characters in a game - unless they're on the "other side"....

I don't have a clue about "quippy Marvel dialogue". Not something I ever pay any attention to. For reference - the last time I had anything to do with a "superhero" was comic books about Superman in the mid-50s, and that was because my dad thought they were great, so bought them for my brother (and I got them later by default instead of the real books I'd rather have had - and which I had to access through whatever library was available, if any).

This is honestly one of my favorite tropes in media as well. I thought it was really done well in the Thieves Guild and with Zaji, so I'm willing to give ZOS the benefit of the doubt that I'll also enjoy Tanlorin.

I wouldn't have anything to do with someone like Jakarn IRL, but it's a fun way to engage with fantasy IMO. Part of the fun fantasy is being able to enjoy things that wouldn't happen IRL imo e.g. Pirates that don't steal from anyone but evil people with infinite wealth.

As for Marvel, they pack their stories with constant quips. And they very often undercut scenes that are supposed to have dramatic tension with it too. Basically an anti-climax. They certainly did not invent either of these things. They are very old ideas that predate movies entirely. But, Marvel has made it gain new popularity and because those movies make more money than all others, this type of thing is spreading to other movies where it absolutely doesn't belong. At the end of the day Marvel movies are supposed to be "fun for all ages" and it's humor and sensibilities skew young. But, that doesn't mean that ALL movies have to. I'm seeing this stuff in even M rated things.

I'll definitely unlock them both and probably get them leveled-up, since that's one thing I really enjoy- leveling- even if Companion leveling is extremely tedious.

As for using them permanently... well that depends a lot on their usefulness and especially personality. There is a reason I don't use Ember... at all. I think her skills are awesome, but her childish personality and high voice grates on me.

Sharp so far has been my favorite, then Bastian, then Isobel. I use Azandar as a tank for fighting world bosses ONLY, so that's the only time he comes out. The others I have set as DPS- which I don't really need in most content- but they are still fun to have around.

I'll be curious how the new characters are with personality and VOICE. As I said, Ember's voice and personality are the main reasons I don't use her... hopefully the new characters are better than her.

It's the same for me - if I can't stand the character traits or the voice, it's over. And I also disliked Ember because of that (same reason: too childish for my liking).

I wouldn't say some characters are "better" than others, though. From the writing quality, they were all done okay so far (the only thing I dislike a bit is that ZOS sometimes emphasizes 1 or 2 single personality aspects a bit too often in their voice lines - and in general, there could be more different lines altogether). Ember certainly depicts a certain character type well - for those who like that, she's perfect. In the end, it's a question of personal taste.

Let's wait and see how the new ones are. Will someone who tests them on PTS write a little here?

The description about these Companions says "Once acquired, you can find and recruit them within the zones of Auridon (Tanlorin), and Reaper’s March (Zerith-var).".

Does this mean we won't run into them unless we acquire them? Or will they be present in the world but just not interactable?

I will get, use and level both... just like the rest.

I will work to level them up in all their skill lines... just like the rest... (it's the completionist in me)

and I will listen to what they say and react according to their wishes... sort of...

Bastian is the only companion that I have maxed his rapport on one character to the full -5000 (max negative). he gets on my nerves and hates cheese...

If the new ones have opinions that get to grate on my nerves, I may give them the same treatment, we will have to see.

I'm pretty sure if someone is using a companion you will see it...just like if someone is riding a Radiant aspect everyone will see it. I think it should be if you don't own something you can't see it in the world.....I hate when my frame rate drops every time a guild full of sparkle ponies rides by.
