Are you going to use the new Companions, Tanlorin and Zerith-Var?

Not gonna use either because I never use companions. Its a good feature to have but it doesn't impact the things I personally do in game like... 99% of the time. I can just grab Mirri if I really need someone to proc the defensive bonus of Pearlescent Ward lol

The more I think about it the more I am leaning towards passing on both. Even though I am somewhat interested in seeing how a Necromancer Companion would work I just don't feel like going through the whole unlocking and leveling thing again. Getting the houseguest is tempting but I just don't want it bad enough to do it.

I recently made a thread asking when is it enough with getting new Companions, and I personally have reached that point. If we ever get a Verandis type I'll be all over it, but until then I'm satisfied with Azandar and Sharp.

(I wish we could edit our poll votes.)

My 2 cents. I would say 2 more companions, a werewolf and a vampire. Or the ability to get our existing companions "turned" and add the skills to their skill lines.

Of course, I also wouldn't mind some animal based companions, Basically companion style combat pets.

So, are the new companions on PTS now? Any first impressions? (Or is it forbidden to write about it outside the PTS subforum?)

It's not strictly forbidden, as you can see from the discussions of cloak and some of the new sets in General, although mods encourage discussion about PTS changes in the PTS section of the forum. In part that's so the devs can have all the feedback concentrated in one place. (For some reason the PTS bug report threads have also been put into the general Bug Reports section, which may be an error.)

There is a specific feedback thread on the U44 companions here:

I definitely want to try Tanlorin, since I'm kind of a "Treasure chest andy" and open practically every chest and often farm safeboxes so his pick lock and force lock bonus sounds awesome to me.
My current companion (Azandar) is a tank so I just hope Tanlorin will have solid tank skills. But I'll definitely give him a shot.

As I expected, the price of purple companion's gear has skyrocketet. A piece I bought for 100,000 Gold a month ago was already on sale for 300,000 yesterday but now after the patch they're on sale for 10 or even 20 times that amount.

Absolutely nuts. Glad I bought my gear for both in advance.

I hope they aren't visible at all unless we acquire them.

I'm pretty sure if someone is using a companion you will see it...just like if someone is riding a Radiant aspect everyone will see it. I think it should be if you don't own something you can't see it in the world.....I hate when my frame rate drops every time a guild full of sparkle ponies rides by.

I should have been more clear. I know I will see others Companions. I just don't want to see them standing in the world waiting for someone to come up and start their quest chains. I want to pretend they don't exist in my world.

ill use both, at least to get them to lvl 20, but since they are still following the nonsense requirement that we have to run the intro on all characters, i likely wont unlock them on more than 2 characters (my main, and a dps to powerlevel them)

Well, having to buy them is a big bummer. Companions should be part of the Chapter release.

I would've liked a Necro companion. But not like this. And not another Khajiit.

    Very bad choices ZOS.

Yes, they should have been part of the chapter. Also, the chapter do not feature basic services like the crafting stations. Cant find them nowhere.

I forgot what I voted for, but now, I will say that Zerith is gonna be my new main tank companion. Loved his story, love his voice, his character, everything. It's a great concept.

Not touching the other one though. Not for that reason, but because I can't stand companions that don't let me play the game, and picking up books/visiting the mage's guild and so on is part of that.

Tanlorin and Zerith-var arrive as part of the Update 44 base-game patch, available on October 28 for PC/Mac and November 13 for Xbox and PlayStation consoles. Access to their recruitment quests is available via an active ESO Plus™ membership or purchase from the Crown Store.

After gazing, longingly at the Crown Store, it turns out that the meant the IN-GAME Crown Store.

So what's the IN-GAME cost for these items? Does anyone know?

I mean... I wish there was another option in the poll:

"I'll level them up for their passives, and then will never look at them again."

I like the companion system. I play at odd, irregular times and the game feels less lonely with a friendly face nearby. Also, the companions strike a real fine balance. Their usefulness and utility helps make them more endearing (Mirri has saved my bacon more than a few times and I think highly of her for it), but they aren't SO useful as to invalidate grouping with actual other players for harder content. That's a hard thing to achieve. I respect it. Legitimately. I also respect that the companion system meshes so flawlessly with the rest of the game that it feels like it has always been here. I could ramble more. I have a lot of praise for it. I hope that the developers behind it got some nice bonuses and/or a lot of extra PTO days.

The above having been said, I already have 6 companions. 4 that are specced as healers, one that is a tank, and one that is a dps that I never use (because DPS-spec companions are too squishy and aren't nearly as useful). What am I going to do with these two new ones? Another two healers? How many healing companions do I need?

I've run out of use for new companions at this point.

Also, to be real, neither of these appeal to me. That is FINE, by the way. I love Mirri, Ember is adorkable, Azandar is delightfully sassy (though I never use him because of his mushroom phobia), and Sharp is an absolute doll. Awesome. Bastien is too boring for me to care about and Isobel's obsession with her "sister from another mother" skeeves me out. But whatever, right? 4 out of 6 is not bad. ZOS is writing different characters to appeal to different palates. They're not all "made for me," as it were. That 4 of them make me smile at the mere mention of their names is lucky for me.

The new necromancer is a goody-two shoes and I wanted a fiend. Bleh. The other companion is <snip> in my medieval fantasy game. An even bigger BLEH. I wasn't going to buy them, truth be told. I might be a completionist whale, but I had genuinely zero interest... and then I was given them for the price of $0.00. At that cost, I can ignore my scruples, push on through for my passives, and never look at them again. 4 out of 8. Still not shabby. Still lucky that 4 characters rank up with Lyris and Sai Sahan in my ESO character pantheon.

Zerith-var's back story is good, but that does not mean the cat will be a good companion

I thought Mirri's voice and attitude were annoying but these two take the cake, I cannot stand either of their voices, plus I doubt that they will top Isobel, Ember or Bastian gameplaywise

I claimed them because they are free but as it stands, companions are pretty worthless in this game. They dont do enough DPS to be useful (not like overland is difficult, mind you). As a tank and healer they can be somewhat utilized but their poor AI kills them pretty quickly so /shrug

Tanlorin will dock you with -rapport points if you:
    Read a Mage's Guild Book
    Visit a Mage's Guild
Defend yourself against a Gryphon or Indrik
Harvest a nirnroot or crimson nirnroot
    Visit Artaeum or Eyevea

I tried picking them up today regardless but I couldn't even get through their quest, they annoyed me too much.

I adore Zerith though, new favorite companion, sorry Bastian.

Rapport in this game makes no sense when you're penalized for doing normal in-game activities. I think they were going for the type of rapport you see in BioWare games, but in those games, you're never penalized for just playing the game. Rapport is all about how you interact with the companions in conversations. Of course, the companion conversations are so shallow in ESO that they couldn't do it that way, so they went with the "we'll punish our players for playing the game naturally" route. They should have left it out altogether.
