More commonly the other way around lol.
Ganker kills a dude(that's busy with NPC's, mounted or another player) with some cheesy sneak attack combo.
Dude gets furious and sends ganker rage tells "1v1 me trash newb blah exploiter".
Ganker doesn't want to. Ganker has 5k weapon power, no recovery, dies from a sneeze and there's no way he can fight 1v1 in the open. Dude gets no 1v1 and mounts up, still insanely mad. Ganker insta-kills him all over again, whispers "L2P" and puts furious dude on ignore before he gets a chance to respond

Ego is why. A ganker's ego is greatly marred when they attempt a gank and get themselves killed in the process.
They either underestimated your skill, overestimated their skill, or didn't bother really scouting out the situation before engaging you and your group. It is possible to gank a group but you have to have a solid plan of action before you engage.
Nothing hurts a ganker's ego more than them messing up... the rage tells are just their way of dealing with the humiliation.
This is actually part of the bigger problem I am seeing with pvp. There are a lot of players who love dueling, small scale, or uncoordinated combat. Many of them are very good players - a lot better than most players who roll around in zerg balls. The problem is you only have a pvp environment that supports large scale combat, with an increasing emphasis on group play only.
Where do those players go to pvp if you are going to eliminate those play styles entirely? Most will quit. I know I haven't logged in in a few days because it's not really enjoyable anymore. Players who don't want to play as a zerg or group are increasingly being forced out. It is shameful and looks really bad on the ESO community and I believe it will be what kills the game.
Arenas will solve this problem when they are implemented. I can't wait until I can queue up for small scale combat... wandering around trying to bait out gankers gets just as boring as rolling around in a zerg ball does.

Oh GOD! We do NOT need 4 v 4s. Maybe 8 v 8s, but not 4 v 4s. Arenas have just about murdered any pvp in every mmo since forever. WoW, SWTOR, etc. Maybe smaller scale than we have, but NOT 4 v 4s. We live in 2016, not 1995.

Ganking comes with the territory. Its pvp in an mmo people deal with it. I hate the people who send ME the hate messages telling me I AM the one who is trash for ganking them while they do dailys. Welcome to pvp kiddo.
Seriously though i too have had people try and gank me, some succesfull, most not. They call me trash and want to duel. I duel. They lose. Call my playstyle bitchy or lame. Duel them again with no ultimate or pots. Give them a handicap. Most of the time i still win. They start to make excuses. Its the lag, i bugged out, your lucky i skipped breakfast today, etc. Its funny at first but quickly gets annoying.

We just want to get these quests done, and will kill anything that gets in our way. I've had to block many people from messaging me, which is my personal solution to this. But seriously, why can't y'all take no for an answer?

I didn't sit for hours, that's boring. I walk around or wait for a few minutes at the most. Funner than sieging keeps and taking resources, but if people questing want to be left alone I'll leave them alone. I don't gank questers anymore though.
I can't tell if I like ganking. (Quest hubs are a no-go though, I don't do that.)
The other day I took a couple thousand stones off a some guys and I felt so bad I messaged them offering to give it back. Like, I enjoy hunting ppl down like that, but I feel bad cause I know they're grinding and I know how much I hate grinding...
1st world problem.

I never understood the need to message someone that killed me to challenge them or to tell them how bad they are. I also never understood the point in "teabagging". I think it boils down to poor sportsmanship.

The vocal ones at least.
On the contrary, when I go for a gank and fail, it's simply wash my hands and see what happened and move on, it's all pvp anyways. Then I get the mail from said player laughing at me or calling me a scrub or something. I just think to myself "um... ok dude just playing the game, I'm happy you feel super elite now"
Being an opportunist in open world pvp is am expected thing, it's a game and it has a sneak mechanic, you win some you lose some, get over it. Survive a gank attempt does not make you a hero or some higher being that made it out of some unjustified haneous crime. Those types of players generaly complain the most and view gankin as some kind of shameful act of cowardice. It's almost sad.

I sometimes run SB in Cyrodiil (as a stam dk) but take it off when 1v1'ing sorcs. It's absolutely hilarious to me how upset people get sometimes because of other players using a legitimate game mechanic to gain an advantage.
Once I was challenged to a 1v1 by a sorc, but mid-fight he called it off because I was running SB (which I wasn't) Even though I listed my gear, which was probably hundings rage or something super basic, he said I was destroying his shields even when they were active. I told him he just had super low HP, and it was my weapons, which both have irresistible damage glyphs on them. And if someone has low health, it will definitely eat through them just like SB would. So he demanded I use different weapons. At that point I told him he was an idiot and I'm not wasting my time just so I can end up stripping all of my gear off to give him a handicap because he needs to l2p.
Tune in next week for another Peggy's Story Corner, where I'll be talking about a 1v1 with a zergling. Sneak Peek: there was a lot of steel tornado spam.
