I agree with Katanagirl that the content simply isn't fun enough to justify how much time they want us to be in there. I'm not saying there was no fun - it was fun to me for a little while. But then that is replaced with tedium and finally resentment.
I have on occasion likened IA to going on a cross country road trip with a friend. You're all stoked and excited when you pull out of the driveway and hit the road! But then you run out of things to talk about before you even cross the state line.

It is once you have completed the trial that the keys will be used, so you should be good to go in and grab the book/s. Let me know how you get on to be sure, I've still got one one dungeon to clear first.
I was able to get it, a friend confirmed with another friend that the keys are only consumed on completion. The book is right in the entrance area.

SPOILERS BELOW... just in case ya know... you want to understand everything.
The bad guys (Blackguards) are tormenting and capturing argonians to find powerful ancient argonian relics to sell or use for their very evil bad guy purposes. Later you find out that they want a very specific, powerful, and ancient relic for themselves (The Egg of Argon) and you must stop them from obtaining it and using it. But "le gasp"! Turns out someone you know is actually leading the bad guys to the treasure to obtain it for themselves!

Big Surprise: You discover that the Egg of Argon is actually the souls of a lost Argonian tribe (Root-Whisper Tribe) that had originally placed their souls into the Egg of Argon to save themselves from an evil alyeid necromancer trying to take their souls centuries ago. When you discover this you find out that Kassandra was actually using you all along. Kassandra was leading the Blackguards and you the entire time to try and find the Egg of Argon in an attempt to use its power to commune with the Hist. An ability she does not have, as she was born in Morrowind, outside of the Hist. Despite this may cause harm to the Hist and the souls trapped inside.
Final Part of Story: When you defeat the final boss, and rescue the Egg of Argon you find the Hist is now awakening, and wishes to free the souls from the Argon, and itself, from its hibernating state. You must free the souls, and save the Hist tree, by entering inside the Egg of Argon and selecting a companion to be a guide for the trapped souls. So the souls may one day return back into the world of the living. As Argonians usually reincarnate through the Hist when they die, but due to having to hide in the Egg for so long, the process is no longer possible without assistance. Thus they need someone to help guide the trapped souls back to the Hist and in turn the living world eventually. While your other companion stays to become the new Root-Whisper Tribe leader. The Hist of the newly reborn village is suddenly flourishing once again and vibrant, while the new village now contains mixes of the other tribes you have already met in Murkmire, with the souls you saved one day will be reborn as the future children of the tribe.

No idea what cartoonish refers to and i do not play World of Warcraft, but i like that they look similar to in-game character models.
"Cartoonish" lacks realism, both in terms of the figure and material/textures used. It's like a cartoon charactaure of Almalexia in plastic as opposed to the realistic representations of Sotha Sil and Vivec:
Almalexia's statue is like something you'd see in Toon Town, rather than a museum or civic plaza. Her features are exaggerated, including her body markings, which unlike the lights cannot be turned off on the statue.
Until recently, statues in ESO were made in a classical style, emulating natural materials, like marble and stone. Departing from that style loses the look and feel of Elder Scrolls as an IP and puts it closer to the realm of anime. Some may like it, but it's not ESO.
