I mean, that is without considering that many if not most use the Direct launcher, not steam, and that it is, as Karthrag says, without also counting Epic store...

To be fair, I think players are massively underestimating ESO's overall playerbase. This may be because of all the issues and negativity around here, and the game's major issues being discussed often(PvP/performance/fake roles/etc).

People were stuck in their homes in 2020 due to COVID lock-down, so people who were predisposed to playing video games had more time and incentive (as stress-relief) to spend playing.
You can't genuinely compare playerbase population levels during a forced at-home lock-down to the levels during "normal" times.

I mean I don’t think people are “hoping” for this games failure. People comment negatively because they think the game can improve and they don’t feel like it does.
As someone who only does PvE trifectas, since the last update where Subclassing hit, I have only logged in a handful of times since because I don’t like what it did to the PvE meta. I understand not everyone has this opinion.
