A Dragon's Tear has many mystical qualities... dragontears.boards.net
For those of you who have not joined yet or have not read our forums, I give you a story about the forming of the Dragon Tears:
((a history of the Dragon Tears. This recounting is the lore corrected version of what happened in a D&D Campaign I DM'd for 4 years in college.))
The older mage sat in the corner of the study by the fire, his face hidden in his hood, but the firelight occasionally gleamed off his gaunt cheeks. The light was most attracted to strange arcane symbols in silver displayed on his dark blue robes, but the Apprentice wasn't watching this. He was listening to the story...
"Sit down Apprentice, and I shall tell you of the story of the Dragon Tears. As you know, a dragon's tear has many mystical qualities and each one is unique...
In the beginning, the Dragon Tears were associated more so with the Temple of Stendarr than with Mages. Two or Three (depending on how you wish to count!) of their founding members belonged to the Temple of Stendarr... Jethro, the Knight's squire, and Lambert, the devout priest. Jethro was a breton, a noble of a small house, and given to the service of Stendarr by his father at a young age. He ment well, but had a streak in him that made one wonder at how he would ever become a Knight. This is really his story, because, you see... he went on to become one of the most famous knights of their order at that time...
Lambert was a devout and wise priest of Stendarr, known for his battle tactics and strange ideas. He would go on to found an order within the ranks of Stendarr.
With them also went a bosmer fighter named Cantor and later on, a bumbling mage named D'Narius.
It came to pass that researchers amongst the Stendarr clergy discovered the rumors of the actual location of the Armor of Elijah, a knight of Stendarr from the first days. This armor was very valuable to the Temple itself, but also, it was rumored to have magical qualities. The leaders of the Temple called the party together to find this armor and return it to its rightful place in the Temple. They placed this task in the capable hands of Gavin Galwain, Knight of Stendarr. He chose, as luck would have it, his squire Jethro to accompany him, as well as the cleric Lambert. Along the way they hired the mercenary Cantor and met the mage D'Narius (but that is a tale for another sitting!)
You think it adventurous and incredibly lucky that they got chosen for this task don't you young Apprentice? Hrm, yes, well I suppose that is the benifit and folly of youth. I will ruin the story, only to tell you and to warn you that the noble knight died. He left behind his love, a woman of the Temple, whom he could never marry, and whose love could never be shown in public. Such is the way of knighthood and the Temple! Be glad you are a mage's apprentice!
Well, hrm, after much adventuring and long trials, they did, in fact, return all of the pieces of the armor *scratches his chin* I believe there were six - no five! Of them. That's not important - well it is important - but that's not what I'm talking about now! What is important is that after this long journey, the mage that accompanied them saw the dangers involved with artifacts and items of magical qualities. He saw that they could do great good but also great harm. And what is one of the first rules of magic?
"Use magic only when the need is dire and the task at hand cannot be done by mundane means master" said the apprentice.
Good! So you're showing the first signs of intelligence and maybe even some wisdom by the time this story is done! Anyway... the mage believed that an Order should be created with the express purpose of finding these artifacts and making sure that their powers (if any!) were used for the good of the people. There were some artifacts better off destroyed and some artifacts better off locked up. Some that should NEVER have been created in the first place. The order grew into a Guild, and the Guild thrives today as a focused organization bent on the exploration and study of ruins and artifacts of Tamriel. It is their hope to learn from the past and use its lost tools to light the best path into the future."
The mage bent over and lit his pipe, took a pull, and looked to the apprentices face to see if anything he said had actually been absorbed...
