As a matter of fairness, I think that existing players should each get one class change token due to the class rework. Aside from that though, I guess 5000 crowns seems, whilst on the high end, pretty fair when you consider the price of other crown store items.

Subclassing does not let you change the entire Class, only 2 Skill Lines which both need to be from different Classes.

5k seems fair. We can use tokens and respecs to change literally everything else about our characters, so we just need Class Change Tokens to be added. "Class" should not be the one immutable property of our characters.

This was the lowest option, but it's comparable to the alliance change token, and is also how much it would cost to re-buy the armory slots if I were to delete and remake the character.

sure, but you can also create a new character?

I can return to you the argument of the AwA, or the countless number of possibilities for easy XP and to easily raise your character to lvl50 in 2 days.

Not everyone has 20 characters, so rather than asking for a Token to change class, buy an additional character token first :)

What’s the point if I may ask? Just to avoid levelling? That would completely kill the whole reason to have exp scrolls and other bonuses etc.

Not at all, it's to avoid having repeat quest grind mainly for skillpoints. Especially if you've done all the quests before multiple times. It takes months.

Nobody is grinding quests for skill points, that's what Skyshards are for. Takes you a couple days at most to get everything you need.

I find it very dismissive to start a poll and then be upset about people not answering the way you want to hear. Some people came up with perfectly valid reasons why class change is NOT a good idea from the game design perspective. As long as you are unable to eliminate those objections, "let us have fun" is not a convincing argument pro class change.
Also, in my books, roleplaying your characters means that they have some kind of background that can not be *POOF* magically changed, because it "suits the roleplay better".

I am not convinced by any arguments against it because I cannot see how anything raised is more important than letting everyone play how they want. However, I cannot see how I could convince anyone who does think that is a lesser concern otherwise. All I can do is state my opinion, as I have done.

Edit to add: The method of roleplay you have described is no more nor less valid than anyone else's.

"Play as you want" is a line that gets so abused. Using this argument I could say "I want to play so that when I first login I have a fully levelled character with all sets - give it to me ZoS." Also you can play as you want, you just don't want to do the work or pay the money.

If you want the same character but a different class with minimal grinding, do this:
    - buy an appearance change token and check your current characters creation sliders. Exit the appearance change.
    - create a new character of the different class that looks the same.
    - Buy all the skill lines that you want from the crown store.
    - Level the character to 50 which doesn't take long especially with XP scrolls and/or in an event.
    - Buy mount speed etc tokens and level up mount speed.

The point is, you can buy what you need to make the same character again in a different class. Why would ZoS sell you a class change token for any less than it costs to buy all the things already available?

Yeah but what about quests and all the skill points? Considering how big the game is it could take months. Then you'd be burnt out doing all the quests you've already done.

What else are you gonna do if your main character already completed everything and you just switched class on it?

Have more fun when I play?! I don't know why it's so difficult for you naysayers to understand.

And what exactly are you playing at that point? Repeatable quests where you just told me that you don't want to do the same quests again on another toon?

so some people, likely a lot of people that play this game more for the rp part in mmorpg instead of just mmo,
love going through the story with the character they made.
usually that's one main character for all the big story quests, and side quests.

and this game has 39 zone stories.
extra quest lines for stuff like balmora, the fighters guild, psijic order, mages guild, all companions(6 so far), and we will continue to get these long very lovely stories.
so people want to play through future story quests too.
not just repeatable quests, but sometimes those can be fun too.

however some people, like me, also think the new Arcanist class fits our main character and would love to change their class.
or want to change it for another one of our characters who we imagined as a necromancer before that class came out perhaps.

if it were a questing character like mine i can't just easily make an arcanist and go through all the story quests like before and have the same character, that would take likely close to a year.

Nobody is grinding quests for skill points yea totally!
some people like having all the extra dialogue that characters give if you've met them before or someone they're connected to. and people can get attached to their characters if they've been playing with them for years and years. especially if they've taken them through nearly the entire game.

it's probably quite hard for zos to make a class change token to happen, but clearly lots of people want it who have given plenty of reasons for it. so if it ever happens it'll definitely get used.

This sounds like something someone would want if they’re too lazy to level up a new toon whenever class meta changes, or if they wanted to pay to get ahead of the curve when a new update drops— not far from “pay-to-win”.

I have lots of alts and enjoy leveling alts so I do not need this feature. I might have wanted it years ago, pre-AwA, to keep my "main" relevant, but at this point so many characters have done things my main has not, that I no longer would pay for this.

I want to be clear that I would not begrudge it existing for others, but I think it should have a cooldown.

My theory is that ZOS doesn't want to enable class change for the fear of everyone switching their main to follow the meta.
I know subclasses and other characters exist but from the point of view of a developer wanting to keep diversity this is a concrete fear.
In the worst case class change may replicate the problem we currently have with sets where everyone use the same 12 even tough the game counts hundreds.

I'm not against class change after all those years but maybe there should be a big time cooldown on it allowing only one class change for account every 2 years for example.

5000 is a lot but is what I'd pay to get out of my Necromancer main.

I have many characters, but I have like 50 days played on my main and I lot of questing/content done. I'd rather keep having this main I put a lot of effort into, so just playing an alt doesn't solve everything.

What developer would prevent players from spending money if they want to spend money?

Like many people above said, they won't spend money on this to chase the meta because they have already leveled alts on each Class — meaning, the target demographic of this Class Change Token is not the meta chasers, but rather the people who care about their characters and feel their current Class is no longer a good fit for them, and don't want to risk losing the name and other miscellaneous progress (crafting research, riding training, non-Class skill line progress, Dragonguard chest access, questline progress, Skyshards/Skill Points obtained, Scribing Script collection, motifs/plans learned, bag space upgrades, Armory build slots, etc) when deleting a character to recreate them on the desired Class.

Two updates related to this topic.

It is an option on the new Dashboard, go give it a vote.

Second, armory slots are on sale. (Making those account wide is also on the Dashboard) So I did end up deleting and remaking a character in a different class.

(If that is a path you want take remember Champion Points, and outfit loadout. If you have a spare race/appearance token, you can snap some pics of your sliders.)

The devs have said for a while that Class was the one immutable part of a character and that looking into Class change tokens was not on the table. They even referenced that in the reveal for Subclassing as a way for players to customize their characters in lieu of a Class change.

This is correct. It's not to say it could never happen. But there are a TON of moving parts to a class change token we need to get it right without negatively impacting your characters. So it's not on the table right now. Subclassing does not have to touch as many legacy systems as class change token would.
that was the last ZOS update on it, in 2025

Thanks for sharing this. Going to echo that this is even more the case. This system is most likely not going to get touched until class refresh is complete. And even then, the amount of legacy systems that classes are tied into would require a mammoth amount of time to weed through. Not saying it won't happen, but there are bigger things to work on and finish before we can get to this.

My main is a Bosmer werewolf archer. She was originally created, 7 years ago, as a DK due to the poison buffs, but used no class skills on her questing build. As the poison identity has been completed deleted from DK with the reworks, I would like the option to class change her to NB or Warden, which are now both more thematically appropriate (and one or both might be taking over the poison identity with their reworks).

This has nothing to do with being too lazy to make or level a new character. I have 14 characters, all level 50.

My characters are all unique individuals and I am very attached to all of them. My main specifically I have done all quests in the game with, along with a slew of other content. Remaking the character is not an option.

It also has nothing to do with wanting to be more powerful or chasing the meta. I am after thematic cohesion for my character, and the class I end up choosing if a token is added will not be based at all on relative power level.

I just want one, to change my main to something other than Templar... Perhaps a necromancer, or a sorcerer, a dragonknight would be very fun (regardless of it being meta atm or not, it’s just a fun class to play), just ANYTHING that’s not Templar and it would be preferable lol

That said, I used an appearance change token to see and record the exact specs of my main’s appearance to make a new character who’s an exact clone in every way except the class. It’s not perfect but it’s a good way to get around the lack of class change tokens

Levelling a character is not the problem. The biggest problem I face is the crafting knowledge that my main character built up over the years. All the expensive motifs and furnishing plans she knows. It will be impossible to farm for those furnishing plans at the current drop rates, and I have neither the gold nor the will to buy them either.

The idea that my dearly loved main character will be relegated to a crafter role is tragic to me. I think it would be a lot better if crafting knowledge can be shared across characters so that we can actually completely retire and replace our main character if we like.

    0. It does not take that long to get a new toon up to speed and they even merged achievements a long time ago.

For me it is a lot less concrete than this. The best I can put it is that remaking my beloved main would simply "feel wrong."

I understand this is not at all logical and someone who cannot already relate might find it ridiculous and impossible to understand, but the fact is that this motivation exists for me (and presumably other people, likely many being fellow roleplayers) and it could make ZOS a lot of money.

(None of this is directed at the quote specifically. I am just pjggybacking off what was said here. Your idea to make character knowledge account-wide is for me unrelated, but also something I would like.)

I think I know what you mean. I recreated my main; looks, voice, everything, even an extremely similar name, only with a different class. Despite looking and sounding exactly the same, I knew she wasn't the same, and for a while I felt like I was "betraying" my main. But I'm getting used to it. I think it would help a lot if she could do essentially the same things as my main.

For me I have an additional motivation to start my character anew, which is to re-experience the quests again (as my character). If that isn't important to you, I can understand that there would be even less reason to start anew.

However at the end of the day, if it really is virtually impossible for ZOS to change our class, then I think the ability to perfectly recreate a character might be the next best thing.
