TES VI releasing is actually really good for ESO

You know how Fallout got a television series that revitalized interest in the Fallout video games, including Fallout 76? I believe a new Elder Scrolls title — being as highly anticipated as it is — is what will revitalize interest in the Elder Scrolls franchise as a whole, ESO included.

When TES VI launches, we can expect that a lot of ESO players will spend some time on that game. We can also expect new players to the franchise to give TES VI a try, and they might even move on to ESO like many of us have.

The Elder Scrolls Online is exactly as its name implies. It is the signature online TES experience. While there is much about ESO that is reminiscent of the singleplayer titles (which is good!) its strongest points are the constant rate of updates and the multiplayer content (PvE, PvP, and otherwise) that is impossible in a singleplayer game, even with mods.

The best part is that ZOS has already been putting so much effort into player experience improvements, especially for new and returning players, that the new players to ESO may stick around this time. We should expect many new players to ESO due to TES VI's expected popularity.

I'm very excited for the future! Although I can't see myself actually playing TES VI for long, I am at least glad that other people may discover ESO through it.

I started playing ESO back during the console beta on PS4 and I have to admit I was a little disappointed at how ESO looked compared to Skyrim and it wasn't a good first impression. It felt so removed from Elder Scrolls in both graphics quality and atmosphere. It did not feel like an Elder Scrolls game to me. I expect TES VI to look even better than Skyrim did, and I don't expect ESO to be able to compete with that. ESO is like the amusement park version of the real thing.

Perhaps some crown store items will be sold to celebrate the launch of TES VI.

Under normal circumstances I would have agreed with OP. I was foreseeing the population dip slightly for ESO for a while when TES6 released, and then grow again as players returned, boosted by interest in TES.

However now that the teams have been slashed, and Microsoft's priorities shifted, I'm not sure what is planned for the franchise. Is ESO still going to be worked on? I'd normally assume yes, but then again, well, how? In the years leading up to and immediately following TES6 release, we will probably see content for ESO massively stalled and possibly with most bugs going unfixed, as some of ZOS staff work on the other game. It also worries me that MS hasn't said much supporting ESO specifically since the layoffs.

I dont really think these games cannibalize each other....yes people will spend some initial weeks with TESVI but I think they both serve a very different interest and need....
I came to eso through TES but have no intention to stop playing once TES VI releases but rather play both, probably even more....
Eso can also profit, by for example release similar cosmetics, quests, regions from TES VI

About 12 - 18 months after TESVI releases, ESO will open up Hammerfall and kerching!

I need an ESO 2.0 on a new engine, ne graphics, better netcode, etc etc.

Somewhat lore reset (similar to how WoW will be doing if you read the leaks).

I hope you're right. I would rather have seen them not pull their staff off of Eso and expanded that instead. Just imagine what Eso would be today if they hadn't. And while I certainly love all of the Elder Scrolls games, I will have a very low opinion of them if Eso should come to an end over TES VI.

Additionally, can we expect the return of those staff members to Eso once TES VI is released? (If it ever is).

They’re shifting resources from ESO to ES VI. We’re all copium enjoyers here but c’mon.

I don't see this happening in the next three years, though.
BGS is in really rough waters right now and their track record of releases is poor at best.

Ever since Fallout 4 they released one game: Starfield. And that's all that you need to say about this matter.

    TES VI releasing?

I asked search AI "when will es6 release", and it says "The Elder Scrolls VI is expected to be released no earlier than 2029. Development is ongoing, but it is still a long way from completion."

It is not a good sign. TES VI is not releasing anytime soon for one. Second, people are saying they now have the same staff level as when Orsinium was made, but now we find out that ZOS ESO staff will also have to work on TES VI as well as ESO and it sounds like TES VI will be the higher priority. That does not bode well for how much work will actually be done on ESO.

This is how I read the news too. This looks like less for ESO to work with going forward, not more.

my opinion is that tes6 will be mostly cash grab like starfield and feature alot of upcycled recycled assets from eso and other games. Nothing to see here folks. The best days for these companies are long behind them. Even if they wanted to make something great i dont think they have the talent, resources or management to make it happen.

eso will be spare parts in a year or so.

The same number of staff maybe as Orsinium, but it doesn't seem like it's the same people. A lot of the seniors were just let go.

Some part of ESO will be THE linked 'online multiplayer' part of TES VI where you can jump into vengeance pvp and we will also see vengeance-style dungeons and trials. The future is re-integration to one platform.

Think it might be weird if t hey did that. I will say a lot of us that care here for the story/lore and ES in general will jump over to ES: VI.

Hopium is one helluva skooma. I will believe ES6 exists when it launches.

Those "trailers" and 'leaks' are made up bs. Heck, I bet Bethesda still have not started working on Elder Scrolls 6 even now. Todd probably just made an announcement - yet again - to save face. Even if Beth did start working on ES6 this very moment, nearly all the talented people who made the Elder Scrolls franchise what it is have left the studios in one way or another, and I doubt they have trained others to replace them.

Add in the fact that Starfield, Todd's precious pet project, released in a state that is like 10 years behind anything else on the market at the time and still has some glaring technical limitations to this day does not fill me with hope, lol. Microsoft axed ZoS's other MMO project and then a lot of the employees working on ESO too, so who's to say MS doesn't do the same to ES6 when Todd inevitably drags his feet with it? Bethesda basically squandered the ES franchise by doing nearly nothing for 15 years, relying on volunteer modders to fix their games' issues, and coasted on the success of Skyrim, only to accomplish... what exactly? Like some 7 versions of Skyrim with community mods? Bethesda as a studio is cooked in my opinion. ZoS is probably better off than Bethesda even when it comes to continuing the franchise.

I agree, even as a staunch TES fan since 2002. ESO is as dear to me as TES 3, 4 and 5. In a way, even more so because I've spent much more time and money in ESO than all their single-player games combined. I'm much more attached to my ESO character than any of my TES characters. If they sacrificed ESO for TES6, I would be livid.

Basically what everyone expected that time they took a "break" to improve the game. Too bad that cancelled MMO was much more important.

That's because this trailer is made from ESO Summerset trailer. ;)

As for the impact of TES VI release on ESO, I used to think that maybe they will be allowed to finally make another Hammerfell zone then (I guess it's not a coincidence that ZOS avoided Hammerfell for a 10 years straight). No new zone in the current circumstances ofc, Hammerfell or elswhere.

I'm worried about TES VI. They've hired some writers for other games that didn't do well. If the game is modern audience DEI slop, then I'm not going to buy it.

I don't need a new TES title to enjoy the world of Tamriel. Even if ESO shut down today, if the new TES game wasn't appealing to me, I could still spend 1000's of hours in Tamriel playing Oblivion Remastered and Skyrim with Mods (I actually haven't done that yet). All without having to shell out a pile of money to play the title.

I'm not trying to be negative, but I'm just plain stating my PoV. I don't need a new TES title. I want a new TES title, but I want it to be a good game, and if it isn't, I won't buy it at any price. Taking a look at the litany of games that have been failing the last few years due to gaming companies pandering to the modern audience, and the fact that writers from a couple of those games were hired to work on TES VI has me worried.

I hope its good. But hard not to take a look at the gaming landscape and the reality of the facts before us and NOT be worried.

When TES VI is released, perhaps in 2029-30, then one can truly say that TES has accompanied one throughout life... from school days through university studies and now presumably until retirement.

I share a lot of your perspective, but I'm a bit more optimisitc. There's always been room for ESO to be more of a TES experience (even with the MMO caveats), but that depends on knowing what that means *and* the will to prioritise it.
