An Update from the ESO Team

Hopefully we get some more information when the dust settles. I think the original message that was put out on bluesky, basically saying they lost half their team, and the person didnt know how they were going to continue developing the game, was a huge mistake. But an understandable one considering the shock of losing co workers like this, especially ones that have been around for so long.

But It would be nice to know if it was actually half of the team or a smaller amount. There is a lot of conflicting information right now, and a lot of dooming. Either way it really sucks, either way microsoft is garbage, and either way they will probably have to delay some things, but theres a big difference between half of the team and like 30 people.

People unsubbing/boycotting is an over reaction. Especially if you actually love the game. And especially considering the last time this happened we got a complete turn around in this dev team, and things have been looking better than they have in many years. And this isnt on zos its on microsoft, so idk why people would blame zos. And as it stands, only time will tell if things get worse, or better, or remain the same.

Ok, some people in here need to take a deep breath. It's one thing to show sympathy and support, but the over reactions are staggering. This is a business, and a volatile business at that, it's been volatile since the early 80's. There is no job security here, and the devs are aware of that. So, things like cancelling subs and such are going to do more harm than good, and even more people are going to lose their jobs. Right now we need to continue to support the staff we have left.

I was able to cut $300 dollars per month from my credit card statement that would have ended up with Microsoft.

If they are not going to value their employees that make their services worthwhile to purchase, they obviously do not need my hard earned dollars anymore.

It is absolutely appalling what is happening at a time when the game was starting to show signs of new growth. I can not say everything I want to say, due to the forum rules, but rest assured I am very angry.

It is not a good time for ZOS and the other game companies who were gutted, and I hope the individuals affected will be able to find something else.

To anyone who is saying they've cancelled their subscription, or now plan to not buy the Premium or Premium+ version of the Season One update as a way of showing their displeasure with this, I can only ask why you think that taking your anger out on ZOS as a way of trying to get back at Asha Sharman/XBOX/Microsoft is a good idea? It seems to me more like refusing to aid a victim of violence in order to punish the thug who attacked them. Giving aid to the victim does not show that you support the perpetrator; quite the contrary.

So we should continue to pay for a product with an unclear future just because you say we should? That makes sense in your world I suppose, much like your analogy about not paying for a product being similar to not helping a victim of physical assault.

Twist my meaning all you want, but my meaning was clear-- I was talking about people who say "they've cancelled their subscription, or now plan to not buy the Premium or Premium+ version of the Season One update as a way of showing their displeasure with this" massive gutting of ZOS and other game companies.

Can you point me to a product whose future is not uncertain? I can list for you many products that I bought and loved, only to have them be dropped. So are you thinking that I should never have bought those products in the first place, since there was always a possibility that they would get taken off the market? Should we stop supporting everything we like, just because one day it might fail, go out of business, be taken off the market, get cancelled, etc.?

As long as I continue to enjoy playing this game for hours at a time every single day, I choose to support it financially to help keep the servers running and the employees employed. That's my choice. I don't really care what you choose to do-- that's your business-- but if you choose to announce that you're cancelling your sub as a way of protesting this and to send some kind of message to Microsoft, then that's just woefully misguided reasoning in my opinion.

I get where you're coming from and by all means, if you still enjoy playing, or want to continue supporting them, then do it.

However we, in the same way, have every right to protest things we feel is wrong by stopping payments or choosing not to use the product, etc (same reason I don't shop from Amazon).

If a few cancellations and people not buying the new shinies "force" them to end the game - you can bet the farm that they were gonna do it anyway and were just looking for a justification for it. Why else gut the employees - especially when ESO seemed to be on the up (more players, old players returning, guilds reinitializing and a refreshing turn around in communication, etc).

First up, I am So terribly Sorry to all the staff that have lost their Jobs, especially those with families relying on that income! Been there Suffered that, so feelings from experience!

This seems to be simply the way of the world these days, directly or indirectly at the Greed of those in Charge. Great lets spend billions+ on AI, Oh We need more money, Time for cutbacks to keep the shareholders happy and wealthy… ( I know there is more to this, but that seems to be the way of the world right now!)

Having been here from the start on one account or another, invested a lot of Enjoyable (as well as not so enjoyable) time in the game, not to mention Money. This has left a sour taste in my mouth.

But the writing has been on the wall for quite some time, less Free things to the player base, increase purchased items, then no chapters / DLC’s, now seasons switching over to a more monetarised system.

The down side is that the game is competing with more modern looking games (unreal engine / ray tracing / photo realistic), with people these days having shorter attention spans, and in a lot of ways no loyalty to anyone but themselves, simply evolving generations.
The Microtransaction is the only way forward for ANY Game, but with the cost of living rising, wages not keeping pace, computers / game consoles fast becoming a thing of the past. With The look of a retro game for many, but with the cost of a AAA+ one, there is still money to be made.
But with any project you need to secure your cornerstones, you cannot build up or out if the foundations are not there to support things, this case seems to feel like they are now basement building. I do worry about the future of the game, but I worry about everything these days!
There has been, could be , might be, a lot of things that I did not will not agree with, But it’s a revolution, it will always come round to the better brighter side eventually, Ships crews change all the time, but the owners keep them running until it costs them money.

So I get that people want to end their subscriptions, My own wife is one of them, No more money from her! (saves me money as its my money lol) , but without the input of money , the microtransactions will go up to cover the losses, the ESO+ Charges etc will go up to cover the losses, and when its simply not cutting it, the game is gone, same as the ship!
SO yes Voice your displeasure, support those that have left, worry about the ones still there until they are not. But please show these poor people and their families a little compassion, for a lot its their way of life being destroyed, Stress pilling on, Everyone being affected.

You want a meaning full way of changing things, then have a go at your governments and the way that they have altered things in the world back to the Victorian times, Theses people like us having a moan and a rant, are all victims of circumstances out-with of our lowly control.

Once more , So Sory for those that have left, I hope you find a way forward as soon as possible, and for those left, I hope it all works out for you as well, but do not forget your friends that might need your help now

As we get ready to launch Season One this week, we wanted to reaffirm our commitment to The Elder Scrolls Online.

    ...

This game is nothing without you, our community. Thank you for sticking with us, and for everything you bring to Tamriel.

Hours of downtime for the EU server last night, and still no word of acknowledgement of it. That's some reaffirming.

    Seriously?

I've been very critical over the years towards ESO and ZOS, but it's always come from a place of passion. Despite thinking there were several people in leadership positions who should not have been in those roles, I am sad reading the news about these layoffs and thinking about what it means for the future of this game I've played for 30,000+ hours across 10 years.

Wishing the best for those affected, and for those still at the studio who now will be asked to do more with less. Hope the former are able to land on their feet, and the latter find a viable path forward for whatever time remains.

The problem is certainly job replacement, but those jobs are not being replaced by AI. Asha Sharma filed for 5,000 H-1B visa hires this year. Job replacements were not exactly 1-to-1 but what happened was effectively mass ethnic nepotism. Unless they go paid off with huge severances, there will be class action lawsuits.

Let us find verification before making criminal accusation, please. You may have been misled.

Yes, ask grok, an AI, for verification.

You are free to supply your own verification. A.I. have the advantage of being able to comb through the internet for information quickly. The Grok statement simple states that this A.I. could not find anything evidence that the statement was true.

The poster on Bluesky clarified that it was half of HER team, the people she works with, who got laid off.

And there are already over 60 ZOS employees confirmed to have lost their jobs this time around. Just count the names in the original post.

This forum needs a proper block function. (Not just "Ignore", which allows the other person to continue responding and slandering you for no reason.) Turning off notifications for this [snip].

Final time I'll address this non-sense:
It's obvious gaslighting to accuse anyone of "racism" and "incitement" for merely mentioning the racial element of a specific alleged crime, which is factually part of the ongoing investigation. Incitement or racism would involve making hateful statements about an ethnic group, not merely stating the fact that an individual or company is accused of a racially-motivated crime.

I am not a collectivist. You are. I am an individualist. STOP projecting your fallacious thinking onto me, fabricating these wild and offensive accusations. I stated the basic facts, based on public reporting and govt investigations. You applied your own fallacious mental model to those facts and extracted a "racist" understanding, because YOU are a collectivist. You can't take my Premise A, your Premise B, put them together and accuse me of saying Conclusion C. Conclusion C is all yours.

The point of my initial post was clear: Don't blame AI. That's deflecting responsibility from where it belongs. That's helping them dodge accountability. AI is not taking the jobs. AI is not making the management decisions. Managers are.

It is very well known that Asha has AI background. MS is not the only company pushing it. Ubisoft years back showed offf an AI NPC system that could eliminate the need for VA, writers, and more. Nobody is saying AI is making the decisions, but it's foolish at this point to think these cuts are not AI related in some way.

I'd also like news, but no one thinks it's ending that quickly. Even the mobile game closures have had a lot of heads up—and those didn't have players with yearly subscriptions that are still active. XBOX said that Elder Scrolls is one of the flagship series that they're focusing on. For me, I'm playing like normal for the time being.

The updated 2026 roadmap was released on the website, and hopefully we hear more about Update 52/future stuff in the next dev stream (which was scheduled for July) or the following one.

I think an employee will not be able to answer your question.
Restructuring or down-sizing a business that is struggling financially can bring new life to the business. Historically (according to my research) restructured business will continue to do business for a few years if the process was done well. During my study, one case study show a business attempting to save a failing business by increasing sales and lowering product quality. In that case study the business fell down suddenly. But those that do it well can see 5 to 10 more years of service before the company shows a failure to recover.

She should know if they have actual plans beyong Season1 or not? No-way ESO size game would just wing it month by month, unless they are in maintain mode, wich is just slow burn towards the end.
Gaming companies can crash and burn fast, we have seen it. I am not interested to play the game if it just floats for few years. Like is there drive anymore at all? Ambition? Even room for such? What does MS what from ESO? Ofc Jessica doesn't have all the answers, but some sort of clear message would be more than welcome. If she doesn't know (or any of the workers) what is happening, it is hecking bad news. It means MS has no interest in ESO and has left downsized Zos to clean the mess within it's capabilities.
