i really doubt it will happen.

    But if it did happen,
would it be update 4 as it added Upper Craglorn?

or update 9 as it was the last update before Vereran Ranks were replaced by Champion Points?

thank you very much, I just want the old hard game with VR ranks, craglorn and thats about it.

So you don't want the original release version of ESO, which didn't have those things. Are you specifically asking for Update 4, which added Upper Craglorn and raised the max level to VR14?

I started playing not long after that and I wouldn't want to go back to it. I'd miss the new classes, zones, dungeons, trials etc. and features like the sticker book and transmutation, or even the ability to group with people from other alliances in PvE or stay with your group if you go into an area where one of you has done the quest and another hasn't. Even seemingly little things like having to go to the stable to swap mounts and your pets and costumes taking up inventory space would bother me (although there weren't many choices for either).

BTW there is no Guild Wars classic. Maybe you're thinking of Guild Wars 1, but (as the numbering implies) that's a separate game which stayed online after it's sequel was released and has recently been getting updates that make it even more different to how it was at launch.

ESO was not very successful at first. I kind of assume when people want this, what they really want is a mix of the old combat, but with all of the nice QoL improvements that have been added over the years, which seems to me like a major undertaking (mixing up all the old and new spaghetti code in a new way) that the studio lacks the resources to support. I think there would also be a ton of disagreement on exactly what patch to roll the game back to, which might further limit the audience. I don't see it happening.

Maybe a pvp server with an old ruleset would be more feasible and might scratch that itch (especially now that vengeance has shown us that they can do a completely self-contained cyro server with its own rules that doesn't affect the rest of the game).

Given the latest direction of ESO is bug fixes, improvement to systems, graphical refresh on zones (started), QOL and a different approach to new content, I'd rather see where they take the game than throw it all out and have classic.

They might just improve the game to the point where whatever reason you'd want classic becomes redundant.

Not really. ESO Classic had interesting abilities, it had builds, there were passives, and people actually died. None of that is really true in Vengeance.

Some of those old abilities were more interesting than they are on live tbh. DK wings used to actually reflect, frags stunned, jabs knocked back, etc.

Yea no one would really agree on what patch to roll back to. Every past era of the game had its strengths and weaknesses though. Before One Tamriel the game was very fragmented and it was more difficult to play with friends. However, progression felt more vertical and rewarding at the cost of past zones becoming stale. PvP was the main end game attraction which was nice IMO.

I think Homestead is the best candidate. It's a 2017 patch, so it's not truly ESO Classic. However, all classes were in a pretty good spot. A lot of the proc and heavy armor issues that resulted from One Tamriel were toned down. Since it's a post One Tamriel patch people could play together easily. The game was in a great place before Morrowind shook up sustain and introduced an updated CP system (which broke PvP long term).

No, thanks. The old system was terrible. Leveling up to v16 was an absolute chore. One Tamriel is much better.
That aside... no transmute system... no sticker book... no jewelry crafting...
There are so many improvements in the game that very few people would want to do without.
If you want the old difficulty level, you can set it that way.
If you don’t want to use the transmutation system, you’re welcome to grind until you find items with the right traits. If you have nothing else to do and a lot of spare time.

Please no. It's such a needless detraction from good new features and zones, and I really don't think the playerbase should be split. Some MMOs that introduced classic already had split servers, so adding Classic servers didn't impact the people playing the modern version, but eso is just region and consoles.

I played ESO in beta so I get the nostalgia, but it would take a lot from current development.

What about consoles? We had both VR and CP and even Imperial City on day one here, so would that be Classic?

I'm really surprised how many times this comes up given how much the game's improved since the start. There must be a lot of rose tinted glasses out there.

It was complicated, difficult, and almost impossible to source set items without a degree in google because there wasn't standardised locations back then. There was no housing, style parlour, outfits or even costume dying, and a limited number of low quality mofits to choose from. Console didn't even have text chat, just a very toxic voice system. And as @Ardiel said, no stickerbook, transmutes or JC. No battlegrounds, dueling, or solo arenas. No way to even play with friends if they happened to pick a different alliance.

I suspect that what most people who ask for this really want is to keep all the good things we have now, but with original difficulty and skills. Honestly I'd rather just see them improve what we have now than spend money going backwards.

I think that's usually what it is - they want the balance and difficulty from an early version of the game (but usually not the actual launch version) and haven't considered that asking for it as 'ESO Classic' would mean stripping out everything else that's come along since then as well.

Or as other people have said they weren't playing during the game's first year and don't realise how many features and QoL things weren't part of the game back then.

Occasionally it's people whose entire thought process is the summary the OP put in the first post: some other MMOs did it therefore this one must copy them, just because.

    No, not even close.

There is nothing connecting vengeance and PvE ESO. Vengeance is unique and nothing like it has ever existed in ESO. That's why vengeance should be scrapped and ZOS should focus on fixing the game they created like they said they were doing every time the subject came up...until this year.

I'd love to see a v1.6 for Cyrodiil option for sure. Then the newbies could see how great ESO really could be.

You mean back when Nirnhoned Armor was % based and stacked and made players near unkillable? Or back when the CP 1.0 was so broken that any player that grinded to cp 3600 was unkillable and practically superman status?

ESO Classic could be a server on the Imperial City patch where you assign a few people to fix some minor bugs. Make it so you can only play it if you have ESO+ active. You might get some PvP players interested plus some others who are curious about previous version of the game. I don't think I'd have the pull of Classic WoW or EQ Classic though.

I started back in late beta, I'm glad I experienced it but the veteran zones was so empty even if so many people, probably the first wave trough the VR was not doing quests? Or the instancing was messed up so it had as many VR instances as the normal ones?
Would I play an ESO classic as in WOW, no but playing the classic up to doing Cadwind gold and your character jump into normal ESO had been fun. It has to be an warning that finishing Cadwind gold and you would not be able to play in this mode.

Grinding just make you go in circles.

most of these classic games, aren't the absolute base version of the game.

Which is why I'm asking what version of ESO you imagine a classic edition would be. Because it's difficult to have a conversation about whether it should happen and if players would want it when we don't even know what it is.
ESO Classic could be a server on the Imperial City patch where you assign a few people to fix some minor bugs. Make it so you can only play it if you have ESO+ active. I've never played WoW but I've heard that a big part of the appeal of WoW Classic was that one of the expansions completely redesigned some areas of the world so entire quest chains and even towns and things were gone and replaced with new ones. So Classic was not just reverting to an old version of balance but a way to replay parts of the game that had been inaccessible for years.

Thankfully ESO has never done that, or at least didn't until the writhing Wall event. All the old zones, quests etc. from launch are still in the game and still playable (maybe with some rare exceptions where a broken quest was removed and never came back). Personally I'm happy they just kept stuff available instead of removing it and then re-releasing it later, but it does mean there would be less demand for a Classic mode.
