I can imagine if you are someone working at ZOS, for your own sanity you have to get really good at tuning out criticism. But if none of the criticism ever gets through, nothing will ever change. A lot of people really do hate this game, and some awareness of that needs to creep through. I'm not going to go into all the reasons people give for hating the game. They are all out there, expressed many times in many ways by many different people. The people who take the time to write these things aren't just trying to be mean. They want ESO to be a true Elder Scrolls-level success that most players will actually recommend to other players. As it is, most Elder Scrolls fans pretend ESO just doesn't exist.

I've noticed there are two things people outside the ESO-sphere hate with a passion about this game: (1) the floaty combat (+weaving) and (2) the monetization of the game (the best cosmetics are all paid for).

I'm currently playing the remastered version of Oblivion and it's great fun.
I'm even capable of running it on medium settings with an Nvidia GTX 1080 on 60fps without issues. And I was 80% sure I'd most likely have to refund it (Steam purchase) but apparently I got very lucky.

It's incredibly well optimized as far as I can tell and still feels like Oblivion down to the core.

The character editor is incredibly fun and you can make characters look quite impressively unique.
Lots of people complained about the argonians based on the look of a few NPCs but I can assure you that you can even recreate skyrims argonians in Oblivion remastered. Khajiit never looked better in my opinion and the unique alien-like look of bosmer, altmer and dunmer was preserved without forcing "same face syndrome" onto the player while successfully avoiding to water them down to yet another pretty human with pointy ears.

f.e. here is a picture of my argoniann (left) next to an NPC by the docks (right).

Remind you the graphics portrayed on the picture above are medium settings.

Yes, I agree about some characters looking creepy, possibly from being so familiar with them from the OG. When I saw the adoring fan during the announcement livestream, my reaction was "ick!" Thoronir elicits the same reaction from me.

I have no idea, I actually didn't realize she didn't have a cap in the first game. I'm only level 2 so I'm not sure if you can sell her items above her 1200 coin cap as I haven't found anything worth that much. All merchants have infinite coin below that coin as they always have.

Now I'm somehow wondering if the npc design gets worse the farther you venture in the story - the best looking npcs I've seen so far were Emperor Uriel and Baurus after all ;) Or maybe they paid more attention to main characters? How does Jauffre look? Or Martin?

In Oblivion, they all looked like potatoes to me. Everyone. :D

Now I'm curious especially of the elves in this remake, though. Can somebody go to Skingrad and make screenshots of: Falanu Hlaalu from the alchemy store, Skingrad's other alchemist Sinderion who lives in the basement of the West Weald Inn, Maglir from the Fighter's Guild (I think he's also at the West Weald Inn at the beginning), Glarthir (you'll find him - or rather he'll find you :D ), Salmo the Baker (what ever he even exists for, as he sells nothing - and actually giving him bread will make the game crash)?

Oh, and as a plus a few non-mer... Count Hassildor, his steward Hal-Liurz (I think she had huge eyes in the original?), and maybe Gunder and Eyja from the general goods store?

I won't be touching this. If they'd fixed the clunky mechanics and left the graphics alone I might have been interested.

I particularly dislike what they've done to the NPC's faces. They're all unrecognisable and some of them are just plain deformed.

They left the bad bits alone and wiped away the good bits.

Unreal supports vast and deep modding compatibility ...to compare that with this Frankensteined Hero Engine ability is laughable...

It's not about the capabilities of the tool kits. Owning the engine means they don't have to pay licensing fees to third parties to provide creation kits. It's relatively inexpensive for them compared to other companies and they have complete control over what those kits provide. They have a unique relationship with their modding community that is empowered, in part, by them having their own engine.

    Nonsense....lol

The argument that owning an engine uniquely empowers modding communities is downright ludicrous when you factor in Unreal Engine’s superiority. Ditching licensing fees? Peanuts compared to the colossal expense of maintaining a proprietary engine—dev costs, updates, and patches pile up fast. “Complete control” over creation kits? More like shackling yourself to outdated tech. Unreal’s cutting-edge tools, vast ecosystem, and constant updates leave clunky, homegrown engines like Bethesda’s Creation Engine in the dust. Unreal’s Blueprint system and accessible source code make modding a breeze, powering vibrant mod scenes for games like Ark or Squad without needing a bespoke engine. The “unique relationship” with modders? That’s community engagement, not engine ownership. Any dev using Unreal can replicate that with good documentation and support. Claiming a proprietary engine is key to modding is like insisting you need to handcraft a hammer to build a house—when Unreal’s a freaking power tool factory. Absurd and outdated.

The argument that owning an engine uniquely empowers modding communities is downright ludicrous when you factor in Unreal Engine’s superiority.

A lot of companies opt into these types of engines and just get around the fees by not offering the same level of mod support. Bethesda chooses to their own engine to make their games their way and one of things it lets them do to support modding at a cheaper cost. Obviously it is not the only reason or they'd just do like other companies. Simply a nice bonus benefit. A lot of companies don't do that level of mod support because it is a large hassle that costs a lot and doesn't easily gain back costs.

Companies don't operate only on what is the latest tech. They're all aware of that unreal and other engines can do. There's a huge amount of reasons why any developer makes the games the way they choose to make them. At least Oblivion: Remastered is an engine more to your preference. 🤷🏿‍♀️ And that's the last I will say on this as it's besides the point of the thread.

The mer really do look weird.

Actually, Salmo looks so scary, I wouldn't even consider buying bread from him anymore (and I don't seem to be the only person, considering he walks around in rags - I know he already did in the original game, but it looked less horrible. I'll probably have nightmares of him chasing me and trying to stuff me into his oven now).

I agree that the mer design is off-puttingly weird. The humans in the remaster are alright, but the mer suffer from either very odd proportions (the female altmer in particular) or strange colouring. The dunmer should be a bluish grey, but they're green or something in the remaster. I've noticed a fair few altmer with overly big mouths and long, balloony necks. The mouths in general in the game are too big.

I've often been startled and a little scared when I encounter a badly designed mer, which had never happened in any previous Elder Scrolls game. The games with the best mer design remain Skyrim and ESO.

    Some unfortunate examples of mer:

    no crashes. (fingers crossed)

Anyone notice that the new DLC confirms that the
    Order of the Hour
    still exists in Oblivion's era?

Their purpose seems completely different, also it's funny watching a Lich realize that Lichdom is a horrible way to exist.

It's funny that you say that because Digital Foundry were extremely critical of its performance:

Digital Foundry is famous for their thorough an objective performance analyses.

Apparently not thorough enough? I dont know, i didn't watch the video you posted. But I can tell you that 60fps and medium settings on a gtx 1080 is definetly nothing I expected. But it works, smooth as silk.

The optimization is all over the place. On my 3060 I'm getting 15 fps on exteriors on everything on Low, but it works smooth even on High when in interiors. For some people it works well, for some not at all - I did not see any middle ground yet.
